Lipid Activates mTORC1 and mTORC2 in the Absorption of Dietary Triglycerides

2018

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) senses amino acids; however, its role in lipid metabolism is less established. Organismal lipid requirements are largely met through dietary intake. How nutrient sensing mechanisms in gut interface with dietary fat remains unclear. Here we reveal fundamental and cooperative roles for mTOR complexes 1 and 2 (mTORC1/2) in absorption of dietary triglycerides. Dietary lipid activates mTORC1/2 signaling in gut. Hyperactivating mTORC1 by deleting Tsc1 is sufficient to promote triglyceride absorption and metabolic disease in high fat-fed mice. Conversely, blocking mTORC1/2 by deleting Raptor or Rictor each decreases triglyceride absorption. Loss of Raptor seq…

Pulmonary embolism in an emergency care unit of Southern Italy: Evaluation of predictive factors from clinical history and physical exam

2016

An early diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) improves outcome. Therefore, PE should be diagnosed in Emergency Care Units (ECU) at admission. Clinical algorithms support the clinician in this task, although performance is biased by differences in risk factors prevalent in different populations. The clinical conditions predictive of PE were evaluated in subjects from Southern Italy accessing ECU for dyspnea/chest pain. Retrospective clinical data were obtained by electronic retrieving from a hospital database. Data from 8177 patients (age 18-90 years, 54 with PE) were collected from years 2007-2013. Previous history of PE, thrombosis and/or phlebitis, rheumatic diseases, respiratory failure,…

Long-term efficacy of omalizumab (OMA) for patients with severe allergic asthma (SAA). Clinical assessment and relationship to serum IgE concentratio…

2015

Background: OMA is an effective treatment option in SAA. However, little data are available on the long-term-efficacy oft the drug. Objective: To determine the long-term efficacy of OMA in respect to clinical parameters and IgE serum levels. Methods: This was a retrospective, open-label, uncontrolled, multi-center observational study according to the definition of non-interventional studies. 22 non-smoking patients (10 m, 12 f; mean age 47,9 yrs) with SAA were enrolled. Pat were treated with OMA up to for 4 years and total serum IgE levels were assessed at initiation of therapy, after 2-6 ms and 3-5 yrs. Data were recorded on standardized CRFs by the treating physician. Results: The average…

P852Frequency and prognosis of type 2 myocardial infarction vs non ischemic myocardial injury: large observational study from an emergency department

2019

Abstract Background Type 2 Myocardial Infarction (T2MI), due to myocardial oxygen supply-demand mismatch in the absence of atherothrombosis and non-ischemic myocardial injury (NIMI), corresponding to troponin elevation without overt ischemia, are emerging concepts which are suspected to be common in patients hospitalized. However, their respective frequencies, risk profiles and short term prognosis in current routine clinical practice of emergency unit remains to be investigated. Methods Among the medical records of all the patients admitted from January 2014 to December 2016 in a university hospital emergency unit (n=82 543), patients with elevated troponin Ic (≥0.10μg/L) (n=4568) were sys…

1539 Length of Hospital Stay in Children with Acute Viral Pneumonia Treated with Corticosteroids, A Retrospective Study

2012

Background Corticosteroids with or without ephedrine may have positive effects in viral pneumonia treatment accelerating the time to resolution of symtpoms but the evidence is not strong enough to make specific recommandations. Objectives Evaluating the hospital length stay of the children with viral pneumonia treated with corticosteroids, single or in combination with ephedrine. Material and Methods The retrospective study included pacients admitted in our clinic with viral pneumonia during 2011. From 167 cases, 78 cases were selected according to specific criteria: patients having received cortisone (hydrocortisone hemisuccinate and/or fluticasone propionate) associated or not with ephedr…

Stellenwert des Tumormarkers CA 19–9 in der Differentialdiagnose von Raumforderungen im Pankreaskopf

1996

In 96 patients (ductal pancreatic carcinoma, n = 34; periampullary carcinoma, n = 43; chronic pancreatitis, n = 19) the role of CA 19-9 in the diagnosis of lesions of the head of the pancreas were evaluated. The sensitivity for ductal pancreatic carcinoma was 73.3%, for periampullary carcinoma 48.8%, and specificity was 63.2%. Carcinoembryonic antigen was elevated only in every fifth patient. Even when combining the two tumor markers no increase in sensitivity could be observed. The low specificity of 63%, which decreased to 33% in the case of obstructive jaundice, does not allow adequate preoperative differentiation between cancer patients and those with chronic pancreatitis. In cases of p…

Factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene G20210A mutations in Italian patients with Behçet's disease and deep vein thrombosis

2004

Objective To evaluate the frequency and type of vascular lesions and to study the association of factor V gene G1691A (Leiden) and prothrombin gene G20210A polymorphisms with venous thrombosis in Italian patients with Behcet's disease (BD). Methods Included were 118 consecutive Italian BD patients followed over a 3-year period (1997–1999) who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD. The control group consisted of 132 healthy Italian blood donors. All BD patients and controls were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction and allele-specific restriction enzyme techniques for factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene G20210A polymorphisms. Results Vascular lesions were observed in 37 …

Intolerance to hydrolysed cow's milk proteins in infants: clinical characteristics and dietary treatment

2000

Summary Background Multiple food intolerance in infants, including intolerance to extensively hydrolysed proteins (HP), is often difficult to treat. However, few data have been reported on clinical outcome and dietary treatment of these patients. Aims To evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with HP-intolerance and the longterm outcome of treatment with ass’ milk. Patients and Methods This study included 21 HP-intolerant infants (15 males, median age at diagnosis 2 months) treated with an ass’ milk-based diet and 70 cow’s milk (CM) intolerant infants (40 males, median age at diagnosis 3 months) treated with casein hydrolysate milk-based diet. All patients were followed-up for a …
