Prothrombotic State Induced by Middle-Distance Endurance Exercise in Middle-Aged Athletes

2018

AbstractSince the impact of possible prothrombotic factors on blood coagulation resulting from exercise remains elusive, this study investigated the acute effects of middle-distance endurance running on blood coagulation parameters in middle-aged athletes. The study population consisted of 33 male endurance runners who were engaged in a 21.1 km run under competitive conditions. Blood samples were collected before the run, immediately after the run, and 3 hours after run completion. Samples were assessed for activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), fibrinogen, D-dimer, factor VIII (FVIII), von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF:Ag), endogenous thrombin potential (area…

The enantiomers of phenprocoumon: pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic studies.

1976

The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the optical enantiomers of phenprocoumon were studied in 5 normal subjects and compared to the racemic mixture. Each subject received a single oral dose of 0.6 mg/kg of racemic, S(-), and R(+) phenprocoumon. S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.6 to 2.6 times as a potent as R(+) phenprocoumon when the area under the effect/time curve was used to quantify the total anticoagulant effect per dose. Comparing the plasma concentrations that elicited the same anticoagulant effect, S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.5 to 2.5 times as potent as R(+) phenprocoumon. The anticoagulant activity of the racemic mixture was between that of the enantiomers. There was no distinct diffe…

Superficial venous thrombosis: Prevalence of common genetic risk factors and their role on spreading to deep veins

2008

Introduction. Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) has been considered for a long time a limited clinical condition with a low importance, but this approach has changed in recent years, when several studies demonstrated spreading to deep veins occurring from 7.3 to 44%, with high prevalence of pulmonary embolism . Materials and Methods. To evaluate the prevalence of genetic risk factors for VTE in patients suffering from SVT on both normal and varicose vein, and to evaluate their role on spreading to deep veins, we studied 107 consecutive outpatients with symptomatic SVT. Ultrasound examination was performed, and the presence of FV Leiden, Prothrombin G20210A mutation, MTHFR C677T mutation w…

Superficial thrombophlebitis in varicose vein disease: the particular role of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.

2010

Background The purpose of this study was to compare the genetic background of superficial (SVT) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Methods Factor V (FV)-Leiden (G16891A)-, factor II(G20210A)-mutations, protein C- and S, as well as methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms at C677T and A1298C, and serum homocysteine levels (hcy) were determined in 29 patients with SVT and 26 with DVT. Findings FV- and –II-mutations were less frequent in patients with SVT (2/3) compared with DVT (9/5), respectively ( P < 0.002 in case of FV). However, the frequency of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism was significantly higher in patients with SVT compared with DVT (CT 12 versus 10, and TT 7 versus …

Prevention of haemophilic arthropathy during childhood. May common orthopaedic management be extrapolated from patients without inhibitors to patient…

2008

We recommend prophylaxis in haemophilic children with an inhibitor as a way of preventing the musculoskeletal impairment that is likely to affect them. This approach has been used for children without inhibitors with excellent results. If prophylaxis is not feasible, we suggest that intensive on-demand treatment should be given. Two agents, recombinant activated FVII (rFVIIa) and activated prothrombin complex concentrates (aPCC), are currently used to control haemostasis either for prophylaxis or intensive on-demand treatment. As it is recombinant, rFVIIa would seem more appropriate to be employed in children. aPCC could be used in adults, or in the event of an unsatisfactory response to rF…

Usefulness of Thrombophilia Testing in Venous Thromboembolic Disease

2012

Information on thrombophilia risk factors for patients with upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) is limited. The genetic, acquired, and coagulation risk factors of an acute episode of lower EDVT (LEDVT) or UEDVT, either isolated or associated with pulmonary embolism (PE), were studied.A total of 4503 patients participated in a thrombophilia study. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.Mean age of the participants was 55 ± 19 years. The risk of LEDVT or UEDVT, isolated or associated with PE, was calculated according to thrombophilia factors. We found association between LEDVT and factor V Leiden ([FVL]; OR: 1.8; 95% CI 1.4-2.4) and resistance to activated…

Results of the performance verification of the CoaguChek XS system.

2008

Abstract Background This is the first paper reporting a performance verification study of a point-of-care (POC) monitor for prothrombin time (PT) testing according to the requirements given in chapter 8 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17593:2007 standard “Clinical laboratory testing and in vitro medical devices — Requirements for in vitro monitoring systems for self-testing of oral anticoagulant therapy”. The monitor under investigation was the new CoaguChek XS system which is designed for use in patient self testing. Its detection principle is based on the amperometric measurement of the thrombin activity generated by starting the coagulation cascade using a rec…

[Inferior vena cava malformations and deep venous thrombosis].

2006

We carried out a prospective study of 116 patients under 50 years of age who had deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities to determine whether the presence of congenital anomaly of the inferior vena cava (IVC) was a risk factor for the disease. All patients were investigated by Doppler echography. Some 37 patients who had iliac vein occlusion also underwent phlebography. In 10 patients in whom the IVC was difficult to image, magnetic resonance angiography or computerized axial tomography was carried out. In all patients, studies of antithrombin, protein C and protein S deficiency, factor V Leiden, prothrombin G20210A, antiphospholipid antibodies, and acquired risk factors were also p…
