The dynamics of symbiotic protist communities of Reticulitermes lucifugus ‘‘Sicily’’ were investigated to assess the effects of seasonal environmental conditions and the termite’s feeding activity. In worker and soldier castes, the total protist population (total abundance), individual species abundances, and species proportions in their hindguts were examined monthly from December 2012 to February 2014. Linking extreme seasonality and gene expression in arctic marine protists

ABSTRACTAt high latitudes, strong seasonal differences in light availability affect marine organisms and restrict the timing of ecosystem processes. Marine protists are key players in Arctic aquatic ecosystems, yet little is known about their ecological roles over yearly cycles. On several species of Oswaldella Stechow, 1919 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa), including the description of a new species

Oswaldella is the most speciose genus of Antarctic hydroids, being one of the most characteristic genera of hydrozoans of the Antarctic benthic marine ecosystem. A relatively high number of taxonomic characters allow species identification, but some key ones are difficult to study properly with a light microscope. In order to improve knowledge of species of the genus, a SEM survey of five of the 27 known nominal species of Oswaldella was carried out, including type material of O. grandis and O. terranovae. Recommendations for enterovirus diagnostics and characterisation within and beyond Europe

Enteroviruses (EV) can cause severe neurological and respiratory infections, and occasionally lead to devastating outbreaks as previously demonstrated with EV-A71 and EV-D68 in Europe. However, these infections are still often underdiagnosed and EV typing data is not currently collected at European level. Novel Synechococcus Genomes Reconstructed from Freshwater Reservoirs

Freshwater picocyanobacteria including Synechococcus remain poorly studied at the genomic level, compared to their marine representatives. Here, using a metagenomic assembly approach we discovered two novel Synechococcus sp. genomes from two freshwater reservoirs Tous and Lake Lanier, both sharing 96% average nucleotide identity and displaying high abundance levels in these two lakes located at similar altitudes and temperate latitudes.
