Interactive Guidance Intervention to Address Sustained Social Withdrawal in Preterm Infants in Chile: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

2020

Background Preterm newborns can be exposed early to significant perinatal stress, and this stress can increase the risk of altered socioemotional development. Sustained social withdrawal in infants is an early indicator of emotional distress which is expressed by low reactivity to the environment, and if persistent, is frequently associated with altered psychological development. Infants born prematurely have a higher probability of developing sustained social withdrawal (adjusted odds ratio 1.84, 95% CI 1.04-3.26) than infants born full term, and there is a correlation between weight at birth and sustained social withdrawal at 12 months of age. Objective The aims of this study are to comp…

Health-related quality of life in European childhood cancer survivors: Protocol for a study within PanCareLIFE

2021

Background Survival after childhood cancer has improved to more than 80% during the last few years, leading to an increased number of childhood cancer survivors. Cancer itself, or its treatment, may cause chronic health conditions, including somatic and mental sequelae, which may affect survivors’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Objective The project PanCareLIFE aims to establish a large database with comprehensive data on childhood cancer survivors from different European countries, including data on HRQoL. Within PanCareLIFE, this study aims to describe HRQoL in survivors, investigate predictors of HRQoL, and describe the association of HRQoL with hearing and female fertility imp…

A maChine and deep Learning Approach to predict pulmoNary hyperteNsIon in newbornS with congenital diaphragmatic Hernia (CLANNISH): Protocol for a re…

2021

Introduction Outcome predictions of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) still have some limitations in the prenatal estimate of postnatal pulmonary hypertension (PH). We propose applying Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL) approaches to fetuses and newborns with CDH to develop forecasting models in prenatal epoch, based on the integrated analysis of clinical data, to provide neonatal PH as the first outcome and, possibly: favorable response to fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO), need for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), survival to ECMO, and death. Moreover, we plan to produce a (semi)automatic fetus lung segmentation system in Magnetic Resonanc…

Antimetastatic activity of adriamycin in combinations with proteinase inhibitors in mice

1990

The antimetastatic activity of adriamycin in combination with proteinase inhibitors was investigated in mice bearing the metastatic tumors L1210 leukemia, Lewis lung carcinoma or M5076 sarcoma. Leupeptin, a cathepsin B inhibitor, when administered as a single agent was devoid of antimetastatic activity but some therapeutic activity was noted in mice with Lewis lung carcinoma when the agent was administered in combination with adriamysin. Pepstatin A, a cathepsin D inhibitor, had no effect as a single agent in mice with L1210 leukemia but displayed some antimetastatic activity in mice with Lewis lung carcinoma. In mice with M5076 sarcoma the combination of pepstatin A and adriamycin resulted…

L0 trigger for the EMCal detector of the ALICE experiment

2012

Abstract The ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator was designed to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal) was built to provide measurement of photons, electrons, and jets, and trigger selection of hard-QCD events containing them. The EMCal single-shower L0 trigger, which triggers on large energy deposit within a 4×4 tower sliding window, became operational in 2010. The implementation of the real-time FPGA based algorithm optimized to provide a fast L0 decision is presented.

SU-E-T-343: Valencia Applicator Commissioning Using a Micro-Chamber Array

2014

Purpose: In the commissioning and QA of surface isotope-based applicators, source-indexer distance (SID) has a great influence in the flatness, symmetry and output. To these purposes, methods described in the literature are the use of a special insert at the entrance of dwell chamber or radiochromic films. Here we present the experience with a micro-chamber array to perform the commissioning and QA of Valencia applicators. Methods: Valencia applicators have been used, the classic and the new extra-shielded version. A micro-chamber array has been employed, 1000 SRS (PTW), with 977 liquid filled, 2.3×2.3×0.5 mm3 sized ion chambers covering 11×11 cm2, which spacing is 2.5 mm in the central 5.5…

Developing MLS Location-Based Service Pilot System

2002

Development of mobile networks and terminals provides basis for advanced mobile services and applications. One of the new features is support for locating the mobile user by her/his terminal. The Location-Based Services (LBS), utilising this feature, are expected to form an important class of the new services. At the Information Technology Research Institute, University of Jyvaskyla, LBSs have been studied in MultiMeetMobile research project. The project developed an LBS pilot system, called MLS. This paper presents the experiences collected during the development of the LBS pilot and describes the MLS system.

Energy-Efficient Protocol Design

2015

Recent studies have shown that the total energy consumed by the Internet has followed an increasing trend over the years. A considerable part of this energy is wasted due to an inefficient utilization of edge devices , that is, Personal Computers (PCs) and other user equipment in homes and offices. PCs are often left on even when they are not used (e.g., overnight or during weekends), while other edge devices, such as printers, IP phones, and displays, are typically kept always on , especially in public buildings. A number of solutions have been proposed for eliminating, or reducing, energy wastes caused by edge devices. In this chapter, we propose a general taxonomy for their classificatio…

Understanding 802.11e contention-based prioritization mechanisms and their coexistence with legacy 802.11 stations

2005

The IEEE 802.11e task group has reached a stable consensus on two basic contention-based priority mechanisms to promote for standardization: usage of different arbitration interframe spaces and usage of different minimum/maximum contention windows. The goal of this article is to provide a thorough understanding of the principles behind their operation. To this purpose, rather than limit our investigation to high-level (e.g. throughput and delay) performance figures, we take a closer look at their detailed operation, also in terms of low-level performance metrics (e.g., the probability of accessing specific channel slots). Our investigation on one hand confirms that AIFS differentiation prov…
