Conformational and structural studies of N-methylacetohydroxamic acid and of its mono- and bis-chelated uranium(VI) complexes

The thermodynamics and kinetics of the cis/trans isomerism of N-methylacetohydroxamic acid (NMAH) and its conjugated base (NMA(-)) have been reinvestigated in aqueous media by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Hindered rotation around the central C-N bond due to electronic delocalization becomes slow enough on the NMR time scale to observe both rotamers in equilibrium in D2O at room temperature. By properly assigning the methyl group resonances, evidence for the prevalence of the E over the Z form is unambiguously provided [K300=[E]/[Z]=2.86(2) and 9.63(5) for NMAH and NMA(-), respectively], closing thereby a long-lasting dispute about the most stable conformer. Selective "one-pot" synthesis of functionalized cyclopentenones.

Double addition (1,2-1,4) of vinyl magnesium bromide to squaric acid derivatives allows the preparation of polyoxygenated cyclopentenones (8) in a "one-pot" procedure. The reaction occurs through the intermediate formation of octatetraenes (6). Protonation of this latter intermediate at -78 °C with TFE occurs selectively at the vinyl CH(2) closer to the metallic centers. DFT studies of the cyclization step justify the observed diastereoselectivity.

On the absorbance changes in the photocycle of the photoactive yellow protein: A quantum-chemical analysis

Spectral changes in the photocycle of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) are investigated by using ab initio multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory at the available structures experimentally determined. Using the dark ground-state crystal structure [Genick, U. K., Soltis, S. M., Kuhn, P., Canestrelli, I. L. & Getzoff, E. D. (1998) Nature (London) 392, 206–209], the ππ* transition to the lowest excited state is related to the typical blue-light absorption observed at 446 nm. Integrated experimental and computational spectroscopy study on the protonation of the α-nitronyl nitroxide radical unit

The stability of the α-nitronyl nitroxide radical unit under acidic conditions is investigated by an integrated experimental UV/Vis spectroscopy and TDDFT study. In the field of molecular magnetism, α-nitronyl nitroxide radicals are important as purely organic spin carriers due to their synthetic versatility. Here, the existence of an intermediate of the protonated α-nitronyl nitroxide radical unit is demonstrated for the first time and a proposed disproportionation reaction is confirmed.

Platinum complexes bearing phosphane ligands in cis configuration with deprotonated flavonoids (3-hydroxyflavone, quercetin) and deprotonated ethyl gallate were synthesized starting from cis-[PtCl2(PPh3)(2)]. In all cases, O,O' chelate structures were obtained. While quercetin and ethyl gallate complexes are quite stable in solution, the 3-hydroxyflavonate complex undergoes a slow aerobic photodegradation in solution with formation of salicylic and benzoic acids. Detecting ni(ii) in aqueous solution by 3-(2-pyridyl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and dimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin

Abstract A new supramolecular sensitizer for nickel(II) ion in aqueous solution based on a pyridyltriazolopyridine-cyclodextrin inclusion complex is proposed. The inclusion complexation behavior, characterization and binding ability of pyridyltriazolopyridine (PTP) with dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin (DMβCD) has been investigated both in solution and solid state by means of absorption, fluorescence, 1H NMR, DSC, and molecular modeling methods. The stoichiometry of the inclusion complex is 1:1, and the thermodynamic studies indicate that the inclusion of PTP is mainly an entropic driven process. International audience; Two new copper(II) polymeric complexes, {[Cu(HPymat)(H2O)](NO3)}n (1) and [Cu2(Pymat)2(H2O)3]n (2), have been synthesized using the Schiff base ligand H2Pymat [H2Pymat = (E)-2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-methyleneamino)terephthalic acid]. Complex 1 is a cationic 1D polymer, whereas complex 2 is a two dimensional polymer. Both complexes were crystallographically, spectroscopically and magnetically characterized. Theoretical studies were performed and the catecholase activity of the complexes was also examined. Complex 1 is a ferromagnetically coupled complex with J = 2.8 cm−1 and 2 shows antiferromagnetic coupling with J = −1.6 cm−1. Both complexes show notable features in the …

Phytochromes are ubiquitous photosensor proteins, which control the growth, reproduction and movement in plants, fungi and bacteria. Phytochromes switch between two photophysical states depending on the light conditions. In analogy to molecular machines, light absorption induces a series of structural changes that are transduced from the bilin chromophore, through the protein, and to the output domains. Recent progress towards understanding this structural mechanism of signal transduction has been manifold. We describe this progress with a focus on bacteriophytochromes. Crystal structures of bR(D85S) favor a model of bacteriorhodopsin as a hydroxyl-ion pump

AbstractStructural features on the extracellular side of the D85S mutant of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) suggest that wild-type bR could be a hydroxyl-ion pump. A position between the protonated Schiff base and residue 85 serves as an anion-binding site in the mutant protein, and hydroxyl ions should have access to this site during the O-intermediate of the wild-type bR photocycle. The guanidinium group of R82 is proposed (1) to serve as a shuttle that eliminates the Born energy penalty for entry of an anion into this binding pocket, and conversely, (2) to block the exit of a proton or a related proton carrier.

The second round of the community-wide initiative Critical Assessment of automated Structure Determination of Proteins by NMR (CASD-NMR-2013) comprised ten blind target datasets, consisting of unprocessed spectral data, assigned chemical shift lists and unassigned NOESY peak and RDC lists, that were made available in both curated (i.e. manually refined) or un-curated (i.e. automatically generated) form.
