ENDOR Spectroscopic and Molecular Orbital Study of the Dynamical Properties of the Side Chain in Radical Anions of Ubiquinones Q-1, Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10

2000

Abstract The dynamics of the side chain of the radical anions of ubiquinones Q-1 (2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[3-methyl-2-butenyl]-1,4-benzoquinone), Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10 have been investigated using electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy. When radicals are produced in the liquid phase, secondary radicals are also formed. The EPR spectra of these additional radicals overlap with the radical of interest. ENDOR spectroscopy was found to be capable for studying the dynamical properties of such conditions. The temperature dependence of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of the β- and γ-protons of the side chain was measured. The activation energy of the rotation and other dyn…

Detection of charged pions and protons in the segmented electromagnetic calorimeter TAPS

1998

We present the characteristics of the segmented BaF2 calorimeter TAPS for the measurement of charged pions and protons. The method of particle identification exploits the relation between the kinetic energy of a particle, its mass and the time-of-flight required to reach the detector. The detection efficiency is calculated using GEANT-GCALOR simulations. The analysis method is applied in the reaction Ar-40 + Ca-nat at 0.8A GeV. The simultaneous detection of charged pions and protons can be used to search for correlated pairs signalling the de-excitation of the Delta(1232) resonance. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. First measurement of the polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections in single π 0 photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons

2017

The double-polarization observable $E$ and the helicity-dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$ and $\sigma_{3/2}$ have been measured for the first time for single $\pi^{0}$ photoproduction from protons and neutrons bound in the deuteron at the electron accelerator facility MAMI in Mainz, Germany. The experiment used a circularly polarized photon beam and a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products, recoil nucleons and decay photons from the $\pi^0$ meson were detected with the Crystal Ball and TAPS electromagnetic calorimeters. Effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the $\pi^{0}N$ final state. A comparison to data mea…

First measurement of helicity-dependent cross sections in π0η photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons

2018

The helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs have been measured for the first time. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS calorimeter. The experiment used a polarized deuterated butanol target and a circularly polarized photon beam. This arrangement allowed the $\sigma_{1/2}$ (photon and target spin antiparallel) and $\sigma_{3/2}$ (parallel spins) components to be measured for quasi-free production of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs off protons and neutrons. The main finding is that the two helicity components contribute identically, within uncertainties, for both participant pr…

Deuteron photodisintegration by polarized photons in the region of the $d^*(2380)$

2019

We report the first large-acceptance measurement of the beam–spin asymmetry for deuteron photodisintegration (γ→d→pn) in the photon energy range 420<Eγ<620MeV. The measurement provides important new constraints on the mechanisms of photodisintegration above the Δ resonance and on the photocoupling of the recently discovered d⁎(2380) hexaquark.

Internal alignment and position resolution of the silicon tracker of DAMPE determined with orbit data

2017

Abstract The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne particle detector designed to probe electrons and gamma-rays in the few GeV to 10 TeV energy range, as well as cosmic-ray proton and nuclei components between 10 GeV and 100 TeV. The silicon–tungsten tracker–converter is a crucial component of DAMPE. It allows the direction of incoming photons converting into electron–positron pairs to be estimated, and the trajectory and charge (Z) of cosmic-ray particles to be identified. It consists of 768 silicon micro-strip sensors assembled in 6 double layers with a total active area of 6.6 m 2 . Silicon planes are interleaved with three layers of tungsten plates, resulting in about o…

A facility for production and laser cooling of cesium isotopes and isomers

2018

We report on the design, installation, and test of an experimental facility for the production of ultra-cold atomic isotopes and isomers of cesium. The setup covers a broad span of mass numbers and nuclear isomers, allowing one to directly compare chains of isotopes and isotope/isomer pairs. Cesium nuclei are produced by fission or fusion-evaporation reactions using primary proton beams from a 130 MeV cyclotron impinging upon a suitable target. The species of interest is ejected from the target in ionic form, electrostatically accelerated, mass separated, and routed to a science chamber. Here, ions are neutralized by implantation in a thin foil, and extracted by thermal diffusion. A neutral…

The FRS Ion Catcher

2013

At the FRS Ion Catcher at GSI, projectile and fission fragments are produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, range-focused, slowed down and thermalized in a cryogenic stopping cell. A multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) is used to perform direct mass measurements and to provide an isobarically clean beam for further experiments, such as mass-selected decay spectroscopy. A versatile RF quadrupole transport and diagnostics unit guides the ions from the stopping cell to the MR-TOF-MS, provides differential pumping, ion identification and includes reference ion sources. The FRS Ion Catcher serves as a test facility for the Low-Energy Branch of the Sup…

Low-energy primary knock on atom damage distributions near MeV proton beams focused to nanometre dimensions

2007

Abstract In this preliminary study, the spatial extent of the defects introduced in Si by a normally incident 1 MeV H + nanobeam was investigated using a hybrid approach. First, the standard SRIM code was employed to calculate the angular and energy distributions of Primary Knock-on Atoms (PKA) using the Binary Collision Approximation (BCA). The long mean free path and the kinematics of scattering in a screened Coulomb potential resulted in an anisotropic PKA distribution that was mainly directed perpendicular to the primary ion trajectories. The PKA energy E dependence was close to 1/ E n with 1.5  n The results revealed that the low energy PKA’s resulted in localised damaged regions with …
