The β2p decay mechanism of Ar
2000
We have measured the beta-decay of Ar-31 with a high granularity setup sensitive to multiparticle decay branches. Two-proton emission is observed from the isobaric analog state in Cl-31 to the four lowest states in P-29 and furthermore from a large number of states fed in Gamow-Teller transitions. The mechanism of two-proton emission is studied via energy and angular correlations between the two protons. In all cases the mechanism is found to be sequential yielding information about states in S-30 up to 8 MeV excitation energy. Improved data on the beta-delayed one-proton branches together with the two-proton data provide precise information about the beta-strength distribution up to 15 MeV…
Coexisting structures in 115Sn and 116Sn
1998
Abstract Excited states up to I ≈ 20 in 115 Sn and 116 Sn, populated via the ( 18 O, αxn) reactions, have been studied using the DORIS Ge detector array in conjunction with charged particle detectors. In both nuclei, spherical as well as regular, deformed level structures were found. The spherical states are interpreted to arise from pure neutron configurations, while the deformed, intruder bands obviously involve proton 2p-2h excitations across the Z = 50 shell gap.
Partial-wave analysis of proton Compton scattering data below the pion-production threshold
2018
Low-energy Compton scattering off the proton is used for determination of the proton polarizabilities. However, the present empirical determinations rely heavily on the theoretical description(s) of the experimental cross sections in terms of polarizabilities. The most recent determinations are based on either the fixed-$t$ dispersion relations (DR) or chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector ($\chi$PT). The two approaches obtain rather different results for proton polarizabilities, most notably for $\beta_{M1}$ (magnetic dipole polarizability). We attempt to resolve this discrepancy by performing a partial-wave analysis of the world data on proton Compton scattering below thr…
Generalized polarizabilities and electroexcitation of the nucleon
1999
Generalized nucleon polarizabilities for virtual photons can be defined in terms of electroproduction cross sections as function of the 4-momentum transfer $Q^2$. In particular, the sum of the generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities $\Sigma=\alpha+\beta$ and the spin polarizability $\gamma$ can be expressed by virtual photon absorption cross sections integrated over the excitation energy. These quantities have been calculated within the framework of the recently developed unitary isobar model for pion photo- and electroproduction on the proton, which describes the available experimental data up to an excitation energy of about 1 GeV. Our results have been compared to the predicti…
Adiabatic cooling of antiprotons in a Penning trap
1993
An antiproton cloud cooled at 4.2 K in a Penning trap can be further cooled by adiabatic reduction of the trap magnetic and electric fields. It will be shown that the temperature can be reduced by two orders of magnitude. This cooling method may be useful to obtain ultra-low energy antiprotons for the measurement of their gravitational properties and the production of ultra-low energy antihydrogen atoms.
Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li
1987
Abstract Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li have been measured by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam. The angular asymmetry of the β-radiation from the polarized nuclei was used to detect the hfs of the 2s 2 S 1 2 −2 p 2 P 1 2 resonance line and the NMR signal cubic LiF crystal lattice. The results I= 3 2 and μI=3.6673(25) n.m. indicate a pure 1p 3 2 state of the valence proton.
A systematic study of proton capture reactions in the SeSb region at energies relevant to the p process
2003
Abstract A systematic investigation of (p,γ) cross sections of nuclei from Se to Sb is presented. In-beam cross section measurements were carried out at E p = 1.4–5 MeV by using an array of 4 HPGe detectors of 100% relative efficiency shielded with BGO crystals. The S factors obtained are compared with the predictions of the statistical model code MOST.
The polarized double cell target of the SMC
1999
The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993-1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. Protons as well as deuterons were polarized by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in three kinds of solid materials - butanol, ammonia, and deuterated butanol - with maximum degrees of polarization of 94%, 91% and 60%, respectively. Considerable attention was paid to the accuracies of the NMR polarization measurements and …
The $\beta$-delayed one- and two-proton emission of $^{27}$S
2001
In an experiment performed at the GANIL LISE3 facility, radioactive 27S isotopes have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 95 AMeV 36Ar primary beam. After selection by means of the LISE3 separator, the isotope of interest was implanted in a silicon-detector telescope where its half-life ( T 1/2 = 15.5(15) ms) and its main decay branches were measured.
Characterizing the atomic mass surface beyond the proton drip line viaα-decay measurements of theπs1/2ground state of165Re and theπh11/2isomer in161Ta
2012
The α-decay chains originating from the πs1/2 and πh11/2 states in 173Au have been investigated following fusion-evaporation reactions. Four generations of α radioactivities have been correlated with 173Aum leading to a measurement of the α decay of 161Tam. It has been found that the known α decay of 161Ta, which was previously associated with the decay of the ground state, is in fact the decay of an isomeric state. This work also reports on the first observation of prompt γ rays feeding the ground state of 173Au. This prompt γ radiation was used to aid the study of the α-decay chain originating from the πs1/2 state in 173Au. Three generations of α decays have been correlated with this stat…
