Neutron-proton pairing in rotating N ∼ Z nuclei: dominance of the isovector component

Theoretical calculations of rotating N ≈ Z nuclei with A = 58 − 80 within the cranked Nilsson+Strutinsky approach, cranked relativistic mean field and cranked relativistic Hartree+Bogoliubov theories show good agreement with experiment. They point on the presence of the isovector t = 1 np -pairing, but do not show any indications of the isoscalar t = 0 np -pairing.
Evidence for isovector neutron-proton pairing from high-spin states inN=Z74Rb

High-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus Rb-74(37)37 were studied using the Ca-40(Ca-40,alphanp) reaction. A previously observed odd-spin T=0 band has been extended to I-pi=(31(+)) and an even-spin T=0 band has been observed for the first time to I-pi=(22(+)); both have a pi(g(9/2))circle timesnu(g(9/2)) structure. A strongly coupled low-spin T=0,K=3 band has been interpreted as being based upon a pi[312]3/2 circle timesnu[312]3/2 configuration. Cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations, which are corrected for the t=1 np-pair field by restoring isospin symmetry, reproduce the observed spectrum. Measurement ofD*±meson production in jets fromppcollisions ats=7 TeVwith the ATLAS detector

This paper reports a measurement of D*(+/-) meson production in jets from proton- proton collisions at a center- of- mass energy of root s = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb(-1) for jets with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar D-0 pi(+), D-0 -> K-pi(+), and its charge conjugate. The production rate is found to be N(D*(+/-))/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for D*(+/-) mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3< z< 1. Measurement of the cross section of high transverse momentumZ→bb¯production in proton–proton collisions ats=8 TeVwith the ATLAS detector

This Letter reports the observation of a high transverse momentum Z -> b (b) over bar signal in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8TeVand the measurement of its production cross section. The data analysed were collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb(-1). The Z -> b (b) over bar decay is reconstructed from a pair of b-tagged jets, clustered with the anti- k(t) jet algorithm with R = 0.4, that have low angular separation and form a dijet with p(T) > 200 GeV. The ASTERIX spectrometer at LEAR

The ASTERIX spectrometer has been used to study the formation and the ground state of the pp atom and exclusive final states of pp annihilation at rest in a H2 gas target at NTP, using antiprotons from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. The article describes the mechanical construction of the apparatus, the trigger logic, the chamber readout, and the data acquisition system. The detector calibration and the offline processing of the 55 million reconstructed events are illustrated. An overview is given about the new physics results obtained by the experiment.
Deceleration of antiprotons from MeV to keV energies

Trapping of antiprotons for high precision measurements at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR/CERN) requires the deceleration of the antiproton beam from typically 5.8 MeV energy down to 10 keV for final capture in standard Penning traps. Two methods, the degradation of the beam in thin foils and the deceleration of the beam in an inverse cyclotron are investigated so far. The foil technique was successfully demonstrated with trapping efficiencies up to a few 10−4 and is now routinely used in the high precision measurement of the antiprotonproton mass ratio. The degradation foil method is compared with the deceleration technique using an inverse cyclotron tested also at LEAR.
The Crystal Barrel data acquisition system

The main detector components of the Crystal Barrel (CBAR) experiment at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN are two proportional wire chambers, a jet drift chamber and an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1380 CsI(Tl) crystals, with a total of 4380 analog channels. A description is given of the use of distributed VME-based microcomputers to collect data from the various subdetectors and to merge the full event information in a global event builder. At this level the data are transferred to a mu VAX for tape storage and monitoring. >
Recent results from the ATLAS SCT irradiation programme

Abstract The irradiation facility at the CERN proton synchrotron, set up to irradiate full-size prototypes of silicon microstrip detectors for the ATLAS semiconductor tracker, is described and measurements of the detector currents during irradiation are reported. The detector dark currents can be described by bulk radiation damage models demonstrating the radiation hardness of the detector design and allowing the current damage factor α and the acceptor introduction term β to be determined. Results from testbeam studies of a module with an irradiated detector and binary readout in a magnetic field and with the beam incident over a range of angles are reported. Beam study of irradiated ATLAS-SCT prototypes

Abstract Prototypes of ATLAS-SCT modules with ABCD readout chips were tested in a 4 GeV/c pion beam at KEK's proton synchrotron. Of both SCT module geometries—barrel and forward—three identical modules were placed in the beam. One module of each type had been irradiated to 3×1014 protons/cm2 in the CERN PS previous to the beam test. A method has been developed to reconstruct the time-resolved shaper pulse from the binary hit information, allowing a more detailed study of the timing properties of the ABCD. The present results will be compared to a simulation of the charge collection and Front End electronics response.
