The 48Ca+181Ta reaction: Cross section studies and investigation of neutron-deficient 86 ≤ Z ≤ 93 isotopes

2019

© 2019 Fusion-evaporation reactions with the doubly magic projectile 48 Ca were used to access neutron-deficient nuclei around neptunium at the velocity filter SHIP, and investigated using the COMPASS decay spectroscopy station. With the use of digital electronics, several isotopes produced via neutron, proton, and α evaporation channels were identified by establishing correlated α-decay chains with short-lived sub-μs members. Data are given on decay chains stemming from 225,226 Np, 225 U, and 222,223 Pa. New information on the isotopes 225,226 Np and 222 Pa was obtained. Production cross sections of nuclei in the region using a variety of projectiles are discussed. The measured production …

β−-delayed spectroscopy of neutron-rich tantalum nuclei: Shape evolution in neutron-rich tungsten isotopes

2009

The low-lying structure of W-188,W-190,W-192 has been studied following beta decays of the neutron-rich mother nuclei Ta-188,Ta-190,Ta-192 produced following the projectile fragmentation of a 1-GeV-per-nucleon Pb-208 primary beam on a natural beryllium target at the GSI Fragment Separator. The beta-decay half-lives of Ta-188, Ta-190, and Ta-192 have been measured, with gamma-ray decays of low-lying states in their respective W daughter nuclei, using heavy-ion beta-gamma correlations and a position-sensitive silicon detector setup. The data provide information on the low-lying excited states in W-188, W-190, and W-192, which highlight a change in nuclear shape at W-190 compared with that of …

Masses of neutron-rich Ni and Cu isotopes and the shell closure at Z = 28 , N = 40

2007

The Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP, coupled to the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at Jyvaskyla, was employed to measure the atomic masses of neutron-rich 70-73Ni and 73, 75Cu isotopes with a typical accuracy less than 5keV. The mass of 73Ni was measured for the first time. Comparisons with the previous data are discussed. Two-neutron separation energies show a weak subshell closure at 68 28Ni40 . A well established proton shell gap is observed at Z = 28 .

βdecay of neutron-rich118Agand120Agisotopes

2003

$\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays of on-line mass-separated neutron-rich ${}^{118}\mathrm{Ag}$ and ${}^{120}\mathrm{Ag}$ isotopes have been studied by using $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence spectroscopy. Extended decay schemes to the ${}^{118,120}\mathrm{Cd}$ daughter nuclei have been constructed. The three-phonon quintuplet in ${}^{118}\mathrm{Cd}$ is completed by including a new level at 2023.0 keV, which is tentatively assigned the spin and parity of ${2}_{4}^{+}.$ The intruder band in ${}^{118}\mathrm{Cd}$ is proposed up to the ${4}^{+}$ level at 2322.4 keV. The measured $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half…

Magnetic hyperfine anomaly in muonic193Ir

1977

The nuclear decay of the 5/2+ 139 keV state to the 3/2+ ground state was observed in muonic193Ir. The hyperfine splitting of the 3/2+ state and 5/2+ state was determined to be 640±100 eV and 1280±160 eV, respectively. The ground state splitting is about twice that of a point nucleus, an anomaly never observed this large. This is mainly due to the different radial distribution of spin and orbital magnetization of a d3/2 proton configuration for which these contributions nearly cancel to zero in the magnetic moment. But calculations including configuration mixing and coupling to a vibrating or a deformed core show deviations. The groundstate anomaly is in line with that observed by the Mossba…

Nuclear moments of neon isotopes in the range fromNe17at the proton drip line to neutron-richNe25

2005

Nuclear moments of odd-A neon isotopes in the range 17 ≤ A ≤ 25 have been determined from optical hyperfine structures measured by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy. The magnetic dipole moments of 17 Ne, 23 Ne and 25 Ne, as well as the electric quadrupole moment of 23 Ne are either reported for the first time or improved considerably. The measurements also decide for a 1/2 + ground state of 25 Ne. The behavior of the magnetic moments of the proton drip-line nucleus 17 Ne and its mirror partner 17 N suggests isospin symmetry. Thus, no clear indication of an anomalous nuclear structure is found for 17 Ne. The magnetic moments of the investigated nuclei are discussed in a shell-model appr…

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry I⊙ in the photoproduction of π0-pairs off the proton and off the neutron

2013

Abstract Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of neutral pion pairs in the reactions γ → p → p π 0 π 0 and γ → d → ( n ) p π 0 π 0 , γ → d → ( p ) n π 0 π 0 off free protons and off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Decay photons from the π 0 mesons, recoil protons, and recoil neutrons were detected in the 4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. After kinematic reconstruction of…

Photoproduction of the Lambda(1405) on the proton and nuclei

1999

We study the gamma p ---> K^+ Lambda(1405) reaction at energies close to threshold using a chiral unitary model where the resonance is generated dynamically from K^-p interaction with other channels constructed from the octets of baryons and mesons. Predictions are made for cross sections into several channels and it is shown that the detection of the K^+ is sufficient to determine the shape and strength of the Lambda(1405) resonance. The determination of the resonance properties in nuclei requires instead the detection of the resonance decay channels. Pauli blocking effects on the resonance, which have been shown to be very important for the resonance at rest in the nucleus, are irrelev…

Lower bound on the proton charge radius from electron scattering data

2019

The proton charge-radius determinations from the electromagnetic form-factor measurements in electron-proton scattering require an extrapolation to zero momentum transfer ($Q^2=0$) which is prone to model-dependent assumptions. We show that the data at finite momentum transfer can be used to establish a rigorous lower bound on the proton charge radius. Using the available $ep$ data at low $Q^2$, we obtain $R_E > 0.850(1)$ fm as the lower bound on the proton radius. This reaffirms the discrepancy between the $ep$ and muonic-hydrogen values, while bypassing the model-dependent assumptions that go into the fitting and extrapolation of the $ep$ data.
