Two-neutrino double-beta decay of76Ge in an anharmonic vibrator approach
2009
We have calculated the nuclear matrix element of two-neutrino double-beta (2???) decay of 76Ge by using the proton?neutron microscopic anharmonic vibrator approach (pnMAVA). In the pnMAVA the wavefunctions of the intermediate 1+ states in 76As have a one-phonon part containing the proton?neutron QRPA (pnQRPA) phonons and a two-phonon part built by coupling the pnQRPA and charge-conserving QRPA phonons. We compare the measured GT? and GT+ Gamow?Teller strength functions with the measured ones. The two-phonon components of the pnMAVA wavefunctions cause the pnQRPA strength to redistribute over a finite energy range. This has only a small effect on the value 2??? nuclear matrix element. This s…
Excited states of111I and the observation of a 21 ns isomer
1994
Proton rich nuclei close to 100 Sn have been investigated inbeam using the NORDBALL detector array. A beam of 270 MeV58 Ni was used to bombard a 54 Fe target. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4π charged particle multi-detector set-up together with a 1π neutron detector wall placed in the forward direction. Gamma-ray transitions belonging to the 111 I nucleus were identified for the first time. A level scheme constructed from γ-γ-particle-coincidence analysis is proposed. The level structure is discussed within the framework of the shell model and the systematics of the heavier odd iodine nuclei.
First measurement of the polarisation transfer on the proton in the reactions $$H(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$ and $$D(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$
1995
The measurement of the polarisation transfer to the proton in the reactions\(H(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) and\(D(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) performed with longitudinally polarised electrons in quasi-free kinematics is presented. The coincidence measurement was executed atQ2≈8fm−2 using the 855 MeV, c.w. beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The recoil polarisation was determined by means of a carbon analyser. The experiment shows that the binding of the nucleon does not modify the polarisationPx of the recoil proton within an error ofΔPx/Px≈10%. The measured polarisation agrees with recent theoretical predictions. Implications for the measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron using the\(D(\vec e,e…
Proton polarization in the p(e,e′p)π0 reaction and the measurement of quadrupole components in the N to Δ transition
1998
The recoil proton polarization in the π0 production off the proton with longitudinally polarized electron beam has been studied as a means to measure quadrupole components in the N to Δ transition. On top of the Δ resonance a high sensitivity to a possible Coulomb quadrupole excitation is found in parallel kinematics. The ratio of S1+/M1+ multipole amplitudes can be determined from the ratio of the two in-scattering-plane recoil proton polarization components. Avoiding the absolute measurement of the polarizations, such a ratio allows small experimental uncertainties. Furthermore, the electron helicity independent proton polarization component enables the characterization of resonant and no…
Roper excitation in alpha-proton scattering
1995
We study the Roper excitation in the $(\alpha,\alpha')$ reaction. We consider all processes which may be relevant in the Roper excitation region, namely, Roper excitation in the target, Roper excitation in the projectile, and double $\Delta$ excitation processes. The theoretical investigation shows that the Roper excitation in the proton target mediated by an isoscalar exchange is the dominant mechanism in the process. We determine an effective isoscalar interaction by means of which the experimental cross section is well reproduced. This should be useful to make predictions in related reactions and is a first step to construct eventually a microscopic $NN \rightarrow NN^*$ transition poten…
Effects of orbital occupancies on the neutrinoless beta-beta matrix element of 76Ge
2008
In this work we use the recently measured neutron occupancies in the 76Ge and 76Se nuclei as a guideline to define the neutron quasiparticle states in the 1p0f0g shell. We define the proton quasiparticles by inspecting the odd-mass nuclei adjacent to 76Ge and 76Se. We insert the resulting quasiparticles in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the neutrinoless double beta (0-nu-beta-beta) decay of 76Ge. A realistic model space and effective microscopic two-nucleon interactions are used. We include the nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations and other relevant corrections at the nucleon level. It is found that the res…
Nuclear stucture studies of transfermium nuclei
2007
The study of deformed nuclei in the region of 254No provides an indirect method to access the single-particle orbitals which are of relevance in determining the location of the next closed proton and neutron closed shells above 208Pb. Several of these orbitals are strongly down-sloping and are close to the Fermi surface in the deformed region. These nuclei are some of the heaviest for which detailed spectroscopy can be performed. Initial in-beam measurements in the region focussed on γ-ray spectroscopy of even-even nuclei (e.g. 252,254No, 250Fm), while more recently attention has switched to odd-mass nuclei such as 253No, 251Md and 255Lr, the latter being the heaviest nucleus so far studied…
Excitation of S11 resonances in pion scattering and pion photoproduction on the proton
2002
A self-consistent analysis of pion scattering and pion photoproduction within a coupled channels dynamical model is presented. In the case of pion photoproduction, we obtain background contributions to the imaginary part of the S-wave multipole which differ considerably from the result based on the K-matrix approximation. Within the dynamical model these background contributions become large and negative in the region of the S_{11}(1535) resonance. Due to this fact much larger resonance contributions are required in order to explain the results of the recent multipole analyses. For the first S_{11}(1535) resonance we obtain as a value of the dressed electromagnetic helicity amplitude: A_{1/…
Effects of orbital occupation on 0νββ nuclear matrix element
2009
We have used the recently measured neutron occupancies in the 76 Ge and 76 Se nuclei as a guideline to define the neutron quasiparticle states in the 1p0f0g shell. The adjacent odd-mass nuclei help define the corresponding proton quasiparticle states. We insert the obtained quasiparticles in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay of 76 Ge. It is found that the resulting value of the 0 νββ matrix element is not far from the recently reported shell-model result.
Polarized structure functions of the nucleon in the resonance region
2000
Abstract We present predictions for the spin structure functions of the proton in the framework of a unitary isobar model for one-pion photo- and electroproduction. Our results are compared with recent experimental data from SLAC. The first moments of the calculated structure functions fullfil the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rules within an error of typically 5–10%.
