On the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the deuteron

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule is evaluated for the deuteron by explicit integration up to a photon energy of 550 MeV including contributions from the photodisintegration channel and from coherent and incoherent single pion production as well. The photodisintegration channel converges fast enough in this energy range and gives a large negative contribution, essentially from the $^1S_0$ resonant state near threshold. Its absolute value is about the same size than the sum of proton and neutron GDH values. It is only partially cancelled by the single pion production contribution. But the incoherent channel has not reached convergence at 550 MeV.

Exclusive ϱ0 and φ muoproduction at large Q2

Abstract Exclusive ϱ 0 and φ muoproduction on deuterium, carbon and calcium has been studied in the kinematic range 2 Q 2 2 and 40 Q 2 dependence of the cross sections, the transverse momentum distributions for the vector mesons, the decay angular distributions and, in the case of the ϱ 0 , nuclear effects. The data for 0 production are compatible with a diffractive mechanism. The distinct features of φ production are a smaller cross section and less steep p t 2 distributions than those for the 0 mesons.

Total photofission cross section for 238U as a substitute for the photon absorption cross section in the energy range of the first baryon resonances

Abstract The total photofission cross section σγ, F for 238U has been measured as a substitute for the total photon absorption cross section σtot in the energy range of the first baryon resonances (50⩽Eγ⩽800 MeV). The experiments were performed at the tagging facility of the new 855 MeV Mainz Microton MAMI B using monochromatic photons and a sophisticated 4π-arrangement of position sensitive fragment detectors. The measured cross section agrees in the Δ-resonance region with previous results and the so-called universal curve αtot/A. In the energy region of the D13-resonance near 710 MeV resonancelike structure could be observed as is seen for the free proton.

The PANDA DIRC detectors

Abstract The PANDA experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will address fundamental questions of hadron physics with unprecedented precision. To reach this goal excellent Particle Identification (PID) is essential over a large range of particle momenta and solid angles. Most of the phase space will be covered by two innovative DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) detectors. The Endcap Disc DIRC and Barrel DIRC will cover the polar angle range from 5 to 22°and 22 to 140°, respectively. Both detectors rely on high precision optical components, lifetime-enhanced Microchannel Plate PMTs (MCP-PMTs), and fast readout electronics.

Centrality dependence ofπ,K, andpproduction in Pb-Pb collisions atsNN=2.76TeV

In this paper measurements are presented of pi(+/-), K-+/-, p, and (p) over bar production at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5), in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV as a function of centrality. The measurement covers the transverse-momentum (p(T)) range from 100, 200, and 300 MeV/c up to 3, 3, and 4.6 GeV/c for pi, K, and p, respectively. The measured p(T) distributions and yields are compared to expectations based on hydrodynamic, thermal and recombination models. The spectral shapes of central collisions show a stronger radial flow than measured at lower energies, which can be described in hydrodynamic models. NUCLEAR STRUCTURE ADDRESSED AT GSI/RISING

Nuclear structure spectroscopy studies at GSI recently gained increased momentum within a broad international community with the installation of the Rare Isotopes Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) project. A wide range of physical phenomena has been addressed by high-resolution in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy experiments with radioactive beams. Relativistic radioactive beams are implanted and their subsequent γ and β decay is investigated. Within this "stopped beam campaign" germanium detectors were arranged in a close geometry around the passive stopper or an array of DSSSD detectors. Search for a neutral Higgs particle in the decay sequence $K^{0}_{L} \to \pi^{0}H^{0}$ and $H^{0} \to e^{+}e^{-}$

Abstract We have searched for the sequence of decays K L 0 → π 0 H 0 and H 0 →e + e − at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), and have allowed for a non-zero H 0 lifetime. Three candidates have been seen, consistent with an expected background of 3.3. Limits on the branching ratio product in the range 10 −8 –10 −7 are presented as a function of the mass and lifetime of the H 0 . These can be used to restrict the neutral Higgs of the minimal standard model.

Implantation-decay station for low-energy proton measurements

Abstract We have built an implantation-decay station for β - delayed proton and α decay studies at the focal plane of the Momentum Achromat Recoil Spectrometer (MARS) at the Cyclotron Institute of Texas A&M University. Energetic secondary beams with a small momentum spread are stopped in a controlled manner into a very thin silicon strip detector. In addition, high-purity germanium detectors are installed for γ ray detection. Here we give a description of the setup and the observed performance down to E p ≈ 200 keV using implanted 23 Al and 31 Cl sources.

Probing structural changes in the very neutron-deficient Os isotopes with recoil-decay tagging

In recent years, the exploitation of the iecoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique with,large arrays of germanium detectors has revealed much information about the structure of heavy nuclei approaching the proton drip line. The yrast bands of the N <= 93 osmium isotopes have been identified in a campaign of tagging experiments using various spectrometer arrays coupled to the RITU gas-filled separator based at the University of Jyvaskyla. Trends in the yrast state excitation energies have indicated a transition from gamma-soft triaxial to near-spherical shapes with decreasing neutron number. Direct mass measurements ofSe68andY80

The masses of neutron-deficient nuclides near the $N=Z$ line with $A=64\text{\ensuremath{-}}80$ have been determined using a direct time-of-flight technique which employed a cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The measured atomic masses for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ and $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ were 67.9421(3) u and 79.9344(2) u, respectively. The new values agree with the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation. The result for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ confirms that this nucleus is a waiting point of the rp-process, and that for $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ resolves the conflict between earlier measurements.
