The effects of religion on development efforts : evidence from the microfinance industry and a research agenda

We use data from the microfinance industry to study performance differences between Christian and secular Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). We find that Christian MFIs have significantly lower funding costs and consistently underperform in terms of financial profit indicators. Market empowerment of the patient: the French experience.

Through analysis of the French experience, this article explores the way economic policy has sought to encourage active, well-informed patients by giving them market power. The new status of the patient as consumer is based on two foundations: the endeavour to build a healthcare market and the activation of demand-based policies. The keystone of this new system is a conception of the market as a process constructed by economic policy. Recent measures such as the standardization of care and the introduction of incentives to respect a treatment pathway then constitute effective levers to establish a free-market rationale.

The issue of conflicting national frameworks on crowdfunding and dispersed structures of investors and products has drawn significant attention in the European Union. Some Member States introduced national rules to regulate their crowdfunding platforms, while others left some aspects of the activity unregulated. This variation of national licensing, diverging definitions of business models and application of existing EU legislation are considered to contribute to crowdfunding market fragmentation. This survey aimed to understand how far the Italian infectious diseases (ID) specialists are confident in the "Undetectable = Untransmittable" (U = U) message and translate this concept into clinical practice. An anonymous survey was distributed by e-mail to 286 clinicians to collect their opinions regarding six situations potentially at risk of HIV transmission between virologically suppressed patients and seronegative individuals who possibly require postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Overall, 51% of ID specialists deemed zero risk of HIV transmission through condomless sex for undetectable patients. In Europe, the widespread transition from the Traditional Staircase (TS) model to the Housing First (HF) model is transforming the way social service providers work with people experiencing homelessness. This study examined social service providers’ perspectives in both models regarding factors that facilitate or hinder their work. Data were collected through 17 photovoice projects involving 81 social service providers from eight European countries. The results show factors affecting social service providers’ work at three levels: systemic, organizational, and individual. We analyze the physical locations of Internet sites with “fr” as their domain names. The data were provided by the French NIC center (AFNIC). Using this sample (a quarter of all French sites), we find a rather even distribution of French sites in the Paris area plus the other main French cities, and the remainder of France. Impact of organizing working hours (5 shifts of 8 hours per week vs 3 shifts of 12 hours per week) on health and job strain

This article gives an account of research carried out on working hours in a French hospital and specifically the impact on two ways of organizing working hours (12 hour shifts vs 8 hour shifts) on workers health and job strain as perceived by the health care providers. Based on 255 questionnaires, this research indicates that the health care providers who work in 12 hour shifts and 8 hour shifts have the same perception of their health and job strain. However, there are some differences: the health care providers working in 12 hour shifts feel less fatigue and emotional exhaustion than the health care providers working in 8 hour shifts.
