Soil type and soil preparation influence vine development and grape composition through its impact on vine water and nitrogen status

The influence of soil type and preparation on vine development and grape composition was investigated in a 50 ha estate located in Saint-Emilion (Bordeaux, France) and planted predominantly with Merlot. Part of the vineyard was planted down the slopes and another part of the vineyard was planted on terraces, where soils were profoundly modified through soil preparation. ABSTRACT Cover crops may improve vineyard soil properties, grapevine nutrient status and berry composition, however, factors such as cover crop type, annual rainfall, climate and irrigation may change their effects on vineyards. The knowledge about N accumulated by the vine organs during the season could support sustainable fertilization programs for table grape vineyards. International audience; Pea is the first grain legume grown in Europe for its seeds rich in protein. As a legume, it has the ability to fix atmospheric N2 by the symbiosis with Rhyzobium bacteria. We have established the importance of proper vine pruning techniques depending on individual grape variety characteristics and its influence on crop formation and quality of the grapes.
