The singular fate of Genetics in the History of French Biology, 1900-1940

In this study we have examined the reception of Mendelism in France from 1900 to 1940, and the place of some of the extra-Mendelian traditions of research that contributed to the development of genetics in France after World War II. Our major findings are: (1) Mendelism was widely disseminated in France and thoroughly understood by many French biologists from 1900 on. With the notable exception of Lucien Cuenot, however, there were few fundamental contributions to the Mendelian tradition, and virtually none from about 1915 to the midthirties. Deception and Abuse: Manifold Instances of Proximity Violence Against Sub-Saharan Women

This chapter, by referring to the gender-violence binomial, highlights some of the dynamics between “resistant victims” and “proximate perpetrators” which characterize proximity violence. It presents the results of research consisting in participant observation of 18 sub-Saharan women residing in refugee facilities located in western Sicily and 16 non-directive interviews, from which three cases have been extracted.

The concept of the preeminence of multidimensional func-tional status in health care, one of the first achievements of geriatric medicine, has been endorsed by diverse sources, and is now a cultural patrimony of medicine. One of the main goals of geriatric medicine is to allow older people to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. The integrated research of geriatricians and gerontologists has been at the forefront of the development, testing, and application of tools to assess functional status, including activities of daily living, gait and mobility, cognition, psy-chological status, depression, and social support.

Yvette Guilbert was a great singer and diseuse whose career spanned over almost 70 years. The article presents her artistic achievements, closely scrutinizes two of her famous songs and finally concentrates on her close relationship and correspondence with Sigmund Freud. Their correspondence from the early 1930s surprisingly focuses on the very nature of art, where the views of the two correspondents significantly differ. Yvette Guilbert's views, naive as they may seem, actually present a strong counterpoint to Freud's theoretical take on art. The paper presents the starting point of a more extensive book-length research into this unlikely and instructive exchange.

Zusammenfassung. Zunehmend wächst das Angebot evidenzbasierter psychotherapeutischer Online-Interventionen. Dies wirft die Frage auf, ob bestimmte Persönlichkeitsmerkmale Nutzung und Erfolg von onlinebasierten Interventionen beeinflussen. Erste Befunde liefern Hinweise, dass sich breite (z.B. Offenheit für neue Erfahrungen, Gewissenhaftigkeit) sowie spezifische Traits (z.B. Einstellung zu psychotherapeutischen Online-Interventionen) als relevante Prädiktoren erwiesen.
