Effects of Interrater Reliability of Psychopathologic Assessment on Power and Sample Size Calculations in Clinical Trials
2002
Although rater training is increasingly used to improve the quality of the investigated outcome parameters, the reliability of assessments is not perfect. Thus, empirical reliability estimates should be used instead of theoretically assumed perfect reliability. Implications of the reliability of psychiatric assessments for sample size and power calculations in clinical trials are presented. The theoretical basis of sample size and power calculations using empirical reliability scores is delineated. Examples from contemporary research on schizophrenia and depression are used to illustrate several implications for study design and interpretation of results. The tremendous impact of the lack o…
Die „Gewichtsphobie” - Ein Diskussionsbeitrag zum Problem der „atypischen” oder „nicht näher bezeichneten”Eß- und Gewichtsstörungen -
2000
A number of authors have stated that the problem of classifying patients whose diagnosis does not meet all the criteria of anorexia and bulimia nervosa has not been satisfactorily solved. The question has been asked if it is justified to regard characteristics like "weight phobia" or body image disturbance as valid diagnostic criteria. In the present study the differences observed in three groups of patients with eating and weight disorders (anorexia: n = 42; bulimia: n = 29; atypical group without "weight phobia": n = 14) were compared using the Giessen-Test. The atypical group was shown to be significantly more "tractable" on scale 2 than the main groups, which achieved a higher score on …
Interaction of somatoform and vestibular disorders
2006
The high coincidence of organic vestibular and somatoform vertigo syndromes has appeared to support pathogenic models showing a strong linkage between them. It was hypothesised that a persisting vestibular dysfunction causes the development of anxiety disorders. To determine the relation between vestibular deficits and somatoform vertigo disorders in an interdisciplinary prospective study.Participants were divided into eight diagnostic groups: healthy volunteers (n=26) and patients with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV, n=11), vestibular neuritis (n=11), Menière's disease (n=7), vestibular migraine (n=15), anxiety (n=23), depression (n=12), or somatoform disorders (n=22). Neuro-ot…
Unpacking the behavioural components and delivery features of early childhood obesity prevention interventions in the TOPCHILD Collaboration: A syste…
2022
ABSTRACTIntroductionLittle is known about how early (e.g., commencing antenatally or in the first 12 months after birth) obesity prevention interventions seek to change behaviour and which components are or are not effective. This study aims to 1) characterise early obesity prevention interventions in terms of target behaviours, delivery features, and behaviour change techniques (BCTs), 2) explore similarities and differences in BCTs used to target behaviours, and 3) explore effectiveness of intervention components in preventing childhood obesity. Methods and analysisAnnual comprehensive systematic searches will be performed in Epub Ahead of Print/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane (CENTRAL), CINAHL,…
Are Polygenic Risk Scores for Major Mental Disorders Associated with General or Specific Psychosis Symptom dimensions?
2019
Background Psychotic symptoms can be conceptualised as dimensions of psychopathology cutting across diagnostic boundaries. Thus, they might be considered enhanced quantitative phenotypes to relate to genetic variants as summarised by Polygenic Risk Scores (PRSs) for Major Mental Disorders (MMDs), including Schizophrenia (SZ), Bipolar Disorder (BP), and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The objectives of this study were to: 1) identify the dimensional structure of symptoms at First Episode Psychosis (FEP), testing whether a bi-factor model statistically fits the conceptualization of psychosis as a single common construct (general psychosis factor) while also recognising multidimensionality (p…
Cost-effectiveness of psychotropic polypharmacy in routine schizophrenia care. Results of the ELAN prospective observational trial
2018
Abstract Aims To analyse the costs and cost-effectiveness of psychotropic polypharmacy in comparison to antipsychotic monotherapy in patients with schizophrenia and schizo-affective disorder under real-world treatment conditions. Methods A prospective observational study including 374 adult psychiatric in-patients with schizophrenia or schizo-affective disorder was conducted. Psychotropic regimen, clinical outcomes, and quality of life were assessed before discharge and after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Costs and outcomes of psychotropic polypharmacy in comparison to antipsychotic monotherapy were analysed by means of mixed-effects regression models adjusted for propensity scores. Net-benefit…
The Italian version of the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire: psychometric properties and validation in students, community, and clinical groups
2017
The current study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Italian validation of the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (DEQ), conceived as a measure of self-criticism and dependency, i.e. two personality factors acting, according to Blatt (2004), as risk factors for depression in particular and psychopathology in general. A series of standardized measures [Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), DEQ, Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R), Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, 3rd edition (MCMI-III)] was administered to three samples (i.e., students, community and clinical). Factorial validity was evaluated along with convergent and predictive validity. In order to evaluate the reliability…
Parental Pre- and Postpartum Mental Health Predicts Child Mental Health and Development
2017
Objective To identify interplay of early maternal and paternal mental health symptoms for predicting child mental health and development. Background Research on family mental health has largely excluded fathers, although the well-being of both parents is likely to be important for child development. In this study, we analyzed (a) intrafamilial dynamics between mothers' and fathers' early mental health symptoms and (b) the importance of separate (mother and father) and joint (additive, hierarchical, and buffering) theoretical models of parental mental health for predicting child mental health and development. Method Finnish mothers and fathers (N = 763), half of whom conceived through assist…
