Comparing colonial differences: Baltic literary cultures as agencies of Europe’s internal others

2016

ABSTRACTThe article discusses the Baltic colonial experience in historical and comparative perspective. It sketches the ways in which Baltic societies are best linked to theoretical discussions on postcolonial issues, and whether they might be looked upon in a more global context. The main question posed by the article is in what ways Baltic identity has been determined by processes of foreign settlement, occupation and colonization of the territory of each respective country and whether we can see Baltic societies as potential agencies of Europe’s internal others.

Latvian CDI: Methodology, developmental trends and cross-linguistic comparison

2019

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in the Journal of Baltci Studies on 21 March 2019, available online: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01629778.2019.1590433. In this article, we report the results of a large-scale population study based on the Latvian adaptation of Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) – a parental report tool aimed at mapping the lexical and grammatical development of children under the age of three. Two CDI forms are discussed: CDI I: ‘Words and Gestures’ (8–16 months), and CDI II: ‘Words and Sentences’ (17–36 months). This article discusses the Internet-based methodology used for the data collection, reports the…

Founding myths of EU Europe and the workings of power in the EU heritage and history initiatives

2018

Along with the European Union’s (EU) increased interest in a common European culture and past, narration as a means to create and communicate about them has gained new momentum. By applying the Discourse-Mythological Approach, I explore how the EU narrates the story of the origins of EU Europe in two recent EU heritage/history initiatives. The analysis brought out three storylines in the mythmaking of EU Europe. While the first storyline emphasizes temporal continuity, shared cultural roots, and preservation and transmission of a common legacy, the second focuses on the idea of a break and a rebirth of a civic/political community. The third storyline highlighting founding figures and key he…

Hegemonic representations of the past and digital agency: Giving meaning to “The Soviet Story” on social networking sites

2015

In 2008, Edvīns Šnore, the Latvian film director, released a shocking and provocative documentary, “The Soviet Story,” which explored some terrible episodes from the Soviet past as well as the collaboration between the Soviet and Nazi regimes. Scholars have argued that The Soviet Story is an effective Latvian response to Russian propaganda, but it also exemplifies the broader problems of post-communist memory politics. This article takes a step further in the discussion of The Soviet Story. It focuses on the idea of how memory work triggered by the documentary got started on social networking sites. In particular, the article deals with the video-sharing website YouTube and the Internet en…

Defending the Nordic model: Understanding the moral universe of the Norwegian working class

2021

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the white working class’ concern with their declining position in the neoliberal era. The hypothesis that social and economic insecurity provoke anger and xenophobia are unable to account for the Norwegian case. The Nordic model still acts as a buffer against neoliberal capitalism, making the white Norwegian working class less vulnerable than in comparable countries. This paper will argue that the Norwegian working class has defended the Nordic model by utilising a range of moral values. I use 56 qualitative interviews to examine the morality of the white Norwegian working class. The study is theoretically and methodologically inspired by Bol…

Scholarly discussion as engineering the meanings of a European cultural heritage

2016

The vague concept of a European cultural heritage is frequently referred to – but rarely explicitly defined – in scholarly discussion. The use of the concept in academia constructs a European cultural heritage as a category in research and explicitly and implicitly produces its focuses and outlines. Thus, the use of the concept can be considered as scholarly engineering of a European cultural heritage. To be able to have a scholarly discussion about a European cultural heritage, the meanings and uses of the concept need to be clarified. This article examines the meanings and uses of the concept in recent scholarly articles published in various disciplines. In the study, the concept analysi…

Performing ‘us’ and ‘other’ : Intersectional analyses of right-wing populist media

2020

Finland and Sweden share the ideal of a Nordic welfare state, with gender equality as a central tenet. In both countries, right-wing populist parties have gained prominence in mainstream politics. Despite similar political agendas at the moment, these parties have different political histories, and different modes of expressing their anti-immigration pleas. In this comparative study, we examine how the distinction between ‘us’ and the ‘other’ is performed intersectionally in terms of gender, social class, ethnicity and ‘race’, and sexuality. For this purpose, we examine empirical material collected from the party newspapers of the Finns Party and the Sweden Democrats, because their content…
