Testing a Psychological Model of Political Trust

2020

The article examined the predictors of political trust and distrust in the context of a new democracy. Latvia regained its independence from the Soviet Union 25 years ago, and its political culture differs from traditional Western democracies by high voter volatility, low ideological constraint, and low political trust. The study tested how perceived characteristics of politicians, political parties and institutions, perception of socio-economic factors, and individual characteristics of respondents predicted the reported political trust in political parties and specific politicians. The results show that different considerations used when people think about trust in political parties vs. p…

Subjective objectivity. How journalists in four countries define a key term of their profession

1993

'Objectivity' is one of the core professional values of journalism. However, there are many different definitions and interpretations of the term in the profession. These notions have changed over time in one country, and they differ between journalists in different cultural and political settings. In this paper we present comparative results of how journalists in different countries look at the term objectivity. The data are gathered from an international study of news journalists in democracies. In this survey, representative samples of reporters and editors who are involved in daily news decisions were interviewed with the same questionnaire. We show how journalists differ in their noti…

Religious Peacebuilding and State Context

2016

In this chapter, Steen-Johnsen outlines how academic debates on religious peacebuilding have moved from focusing on opportunities toward being increasingly critical of the potential of such initiatives. A few theorists, like Brewer, Higgins and Teeney, have acknowledged that religious peacebuilding initiatives must be considered as interlinked with, and influenced by, the political context in which they are situated. In this chapter, Steen-Johnsen expands the discussion of how political context affects religious peacebuilding. She suggests that understanding how the political strategies of state authorities aimed at regulating the civil sphere are affecting religious peacebuilding initiativ…

Finland: Changing Operational Environment Changing Finnish Educational Governance

2020

The main purpose of this chapter is to examine how Finland is developing its educational governance to meet the challenges of its changing operational environment. For our examination, we applied two theoretical frameworks on education policy development. The one constructed in the Comparative Analysis of Dynamics in Education Politics Project (CADEP) by Simola, Kauko, Varjo, Kalalahti and Sahlstrom (Dynamics in education politics. Understanding and explaining the Finnish case. Routledge, Oxon and New York, 2017) provided us with the theoretical lenses of political situations, political possibilities and politicking, as well as with valuable contextual information. The one for the Policy En…

Trade shocks and the nationalist backlash in political attitudes: panel data evidence from Great Britain

2021

This article leverages individual-level panel data on nationalist attitudes to contribute to the debate on the (economic) roots of popular opposition to globalization. We propose a nationalist backlash hypothesis: Individuals living in regions suffering from stronger import competition form more nationalist attitudes as part of a broad counter-reaction to globalization. Analyzing data from the British Household Panel Study (BHPS), we document not only a decrease in support for EU membership but also a general shift towards more nationalist attitudes among respondents from regions exposed to higher imports from low-wage countriesin particular, China. We thus uncover a direct individ…

The VET System, Its Subsystems and Their Links with the Labour Market: Strengths, Weaknesses and Challenges of VET in Spain

2019

This chapter provides the reader with the historical and political background to understand the rest of the book, and it also focuses on the key issues affecting VET in Spain in recent times while assessing the quality of VET rather positively. I explain the parallel development of three different subsystems and their approaches and efforts to reintegrate them. I also show conflicts over control upon VET governance and the role of national and regional governments as well as employers and union representatives in the design of qualifications. Transitions between education and employment, careers guidance and the connections of VET to social policies are also addressed.
