Labour Market Demands, Employability and Authenticity
2021
AbstractFinding employment has been a challenge for young adults in recent years. This is not only due to high unemployment rates, but also because entering working life is more complicated than before. It is no longer just a question of credentials and skills. ‘Employability’ depends on investments in personal capacities: labour market demands in recruitment exceed the capacity of employees’ bodies and minds. This article asks what demands for increasing one’s employability young adults (aged 18–30) experience in relation to their education and working life and how they respond to these ideas, especially to the idea of modifying their minds and bodies—habitus—in order to increase their emp…
Reflecting on Work Values with Young Unemployed Adults in Finland
2019
In this article, we explore the internal conversations about the work values of young unemployed adults in Finland. We draw on the theoretical concept of internal conversation by Margaret Archer in order to shift the focus from the individual work values to the interplay between subjective concerns and structural circumstances. The data consist of six group interviews conducted among 29 young unemployed adults. We argue that the internal conversations on work values of young unemployed adults constitute five significant concerns: self-realization and opportunity to contribute to society; sufficient income to live independently; social expectations; challenges of finding employment; and unsu…
Rules of Engagement: Family Rules on Young Children’s Access to and Use of Technologies
2018
This chapter reports on a study conducted in seven countries in which young children’s (aged under 8) digital practices in the home were examined. The study explored family practices with regard to access to and use of technologies, tracing the ways in which families managed risks and opportunities. Seventy families participated in the study, and interviews were undertaken with both parents and children, separately and together, in order to address the research aims. This chapter focuses on the data relating to parental mediation of young children’s digital practices. Findings indicate that parents used a narrow range of strategies in comparison to parents of older children, primarily becau…
Staying inside : social withdrawal of the young, Finnish ‘Hikikomori’
2016
This article explores socially withdrawn young Finnish people on an Internet forum who identify with the Japanese hikikomori phenomenon. We aim to overcome the dualism between sociology and psychology found in earlier research by referring to Pierre Bourdieu, who provides insights into how individual choices are constructed in accordance with wider social settings. We focus on the individual level and everyday choices, but we suggest that psychological factors (anxiety, depression) can be seen as properties of social relations rather than as individual states of mind, as young adults have unequal access to valued resources. We scrutinise young people’s specific reasoning related to the soci…
Risk behavior of youth – social definition of risk
2020
Social defining of the risk behaviors is rooted in a diverse, multidimensional world of norms, values, rituals and discourses. Including social contexts of engaging in the risk behaviors and production of knowledge about them allowed us to go beyond standard cause-and-effect descriptions and examine these actions as an essential element of everyday practices and rituals of youth. The aim of this paper was to analyze the risk behaviors of youth in the framework of sociological categories of risk, reflexivity and interactional order. The paper is based on the results of the qualitative study conducted within the project “Problem Behaviors of Youth – Study in the Opole Region 2019–2020,” that …
Technology Architecture as a Driver for Business Cooperation: Case Study - Public Sector Cooperation in Finland
2019
The current premise in the enterprise architecture (EA) literature is that business architecture defines all other EA architecture layers; information architecture, information systems architecture, and technology architecture. In this paper, we will study the ICT-cooperation between eight small and mid-sized municipalities and cities in Southern Finland. Our case demonstrates that the ICT-cooperation is possible without business cooperation and that ICT-cooperation can be a driver for future business cooperation. The findings challenge the current premise of the guiding force of the business architecture and encourage organisations’ ICT-functions to seek daringly cooperation with other org…
Orientacja procesowa w zarządzaniu publicznym łańcuchem dostaw
2015
W artykule podjęto problematykę możliwości wdrożenia orientacji procesowej do zarządzania publicznym łańcuchem dostaw.
Wykorzystanie zasobowej teorii organizacji w zarządzaniu szpitalami publicznymi
2017
Podejście zasobowe do organizacji (Resource-based View - RBV) zostało spopularyzowane na początku lat 90. ubiegłego stulecia. Jednocześnie w dalszym ciągu obserwuje się proces kształtowania zasobowej teorii organizacji (Resource- -based Theory - RBT). Rosnąca konkurencja wśród podmiotów ochrony zdrowia stanowi przesłankę do wykorzystania założeń RBT w zarządzaniu nimi.

Adaptation of French society to aging : aging today in an Age-Friendly City : integration, discrimination and roles of public policy
2019
This PhD work aims to analyse the way French cities seize and implement the Agefriendly Cities approach on their territories. Thanks to seventy semi-guided interviews, a second data analysis and active observation, we studied how thirteen French cities decided to implement the Age-friendly Cities approach. This work of research revolves around ideas about how to combat ageism, about the importance of consulting the inhabitants and of using a cross-disciplinary way of work. Like that, it aims to analyse how French cities adapted their local public policies in coherence with the frame given by the Age-friendly Cities approach, the national policies and the recommendations of the international …
