Antifungal agents for preventing fungal infections in non-neutropenic critically ill patients

2016

Background Invasive fungal infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality among critically ill patients. Early institution of antifungal therapy is pivotal for mortality reduction. Starting a targeted antifungal therapy after culture positivity and fungi identification requires a long time. Therefore, alternative strategies (globally defined as 'untargeted antifungal treatments') for antifungal therapy institution in patients without proven microbiological evidence of fungal infections have been discussed by international guidelines. This review was originally published in 2006 and updated in 2016. This updated review provides additional evidence for the clinician dealing with s…

Cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

INTRODUCTION The inverse association between cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in apparently healthy populations has been previously reported; however, the existence of this association among adults diagnosed with cancer is unclear. AIM To determine the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer. METHODS Medline, Embase, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched. Eligible prospective cohort studies that examined the association of cardiorespiratory fitness with all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer were included. Hazard ratios (HRs) with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted from studie…

Efficacy and safety of bempedoic acid for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Background Bempedoic acid is a first-in-class lipid-lowering drug recommended by guidelines for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Our objective was to estimate its average effect on plasma lipids in humans and its safety profile. Methods and findings We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of phase II and III randomized controlled trials on bempedoic acid (PROSPERO: CRD42019129687). PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched, with no language restriction, from inception to 5 August 2019. We included 10 RCTs (n = 3,788) comprising 26 arms (active arm [n = 2,460]; control arm [n = 1,328]). Effect sizes for changes in lipids and high-…

Analysis of scientific production in spanish implantology

2017

Background The aim of the study was to quantify the scientific productivity of researchers, organizations, and regions in Spain that publish articles on implantology in dental journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports. Material and Methods A search was conducted among the core collection of Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science database, on the basis of its broad thematic and geographic coverage of health sciences. The search identified original articles – the main vehicle for the dissemination of research results. The search was conducted in July 2016, applying the truncated search term ‘implant*’ to locate original articles on implantology and its derivative forms. The search was conducted w…

Bibliometric analysis of publications by South African viticulture and oenology research centres

2012

We analysed the production, impact factor of, and scientific collaboration involved in viticulture and oenology articles associated with South African research centres published in international journals during the period 1990–2009. The articles under scrutiny were obtained from the Science Citation Index database, accessed via the Web of Knowledge platform. The search strategy employed specific viticulture and oenology terms and was restricted to the field ‘topic’. The results showed that 406 articles were published during the review period, with the most number of publications being in the South African Journal of Enology and Viticulture (n = 34), American Journal of Enology and Vit…

Predatory journals enter biomedical databases through public funding

2020

Predatory publishing is an international, cross disciplinary threat to the integrity of the scientific system • A worrying number of articles published in predatory journals are indexed in biomedical databases such as PubMed, the free access biomedical database maintained by the National Library of Medicine • Public funding, under open access policies, seems to be the mechanism by which articles are displayed in PubMed. • Providing guidance to publicly funded authors on how to publish their work in legitimate open-access venues will likely stop the wasteful use of public money to cover the fees of predatory journals.

Preparing for CRIS: Challenges and Opportunities for Systems Integration at Finnish Universities

2014

Poster at Open Repositories 2014, Helsinki, Finland, June 9-13, 2014 This paper raises issues presented by integrating administrative research information to institutional repository (IR) and other systems, especially in the context of Finnish universities. The observations are based on preparing for procurement of a Current Research Information System (CRIS) at the University of Jyväskylä. The CRIS will be used by various stakeholders in different organizational units, having conflicting requirements and different notions on system usage. For example, national reporting affects considerably the publication cataloging conventions. Determining the optimal data flow for handling publications,…

Recurrences following treatment of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Objective A systematic review and meta-analysis was made of the incidence of recurrences in patients with proliferative verrucous leukoplakia subjected to different types of treatment. Methods The study was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines. A literature search was made in the Medline (PubMed), EMBASE and Web of Science databases, together with a manual search, covering the period from 1985 to January 2020, with no language restrictions. Studies were included if they described treatments applied to at least 10 patients with the corresponding outcomes. Methodological quality was evaluated using Jadad sca…
