'A Shared Reality between a Journalist and the Audience': How Live Journalism Reimagines News Stories

2021

Live journalism is a new journalistic genre in which journalists present news stories to a live audience. This article investigates the journalistic manuscripts of live journalism performances. With the focus on texts, the article reaches beyond the live performance to explore the wider implications and potentials pioneered by live journalists. The data were gathered from Musta laatikko (‘Black Box’) manuscripts, a live journalism production by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The manuscripts were analysed as eudaimonic journalism through four conceptual dimensions: self-transcendence, autonomy, competence, and relatedne…

Opportunities to Study, Practice, and Rehearse Teaching in Teacher Preparation: An International Perspective

2020

BackgroundAround the world, policy makers and teacher educators are paying increasing attention to how teacher candidates learn to study and enact teaching and to grounding preparation more deeply in teachers’ classroom practice. Evidence from the United States and the Netherlands suggests that efforts to tie preparation to practice may significantly impact pupils’ learning. However, the nature of teacher candidates’ opportunities to study, practice, and rehearse teaching remains underexplored, especially in international studies.PurposeOur research analyzes opportunities to study, practice, and rehearse teaching in teacher education coursework in five different programs in five countries. …

Frequency distribution of journalistic attention for scientific studies and scientific sources: An input-output analysis.

2020

Based on the decision-theoretical conditions underlying the selection of events for news coverage in science journalism, this article uses a novel input-output analysis to investigate which of the more than eight million scientific study results published between August 2014 and July 2018 have been selected by global journalism to a relevant degree. We are interested in two different structures in the media coverage of scientific results. Firstly, the structure of sources that journalists use, i.e. scientific journals, and secondly, the congruence of the journalistic selection of single results. Previous research suggests that the selection of sources and results follows a certain heavy-tai…

Accuracy and Completeness of Drug Information in Wikipedia: A Comparison with Standard Textbooks of Pharmacology

2014

The online resource Wikipedia is increasingly used by students for knowledge acquisition and learning. However, the lack of a formal editorial review and the heterogeneous expertise of contributors often results in skepticism by educators whether Wikipedia should be recommended to students as an information source. In this study we systematically analyzed the accuracy and completeness of drug information in the German and English language versions of Wikipedia in comparison to standard textbooks of pharmacology. In addition, references, revision history and readability were evaluated. Analysis of readability was performed using the Amstad readability index and the Erste Wiener Sachtextforme…

Indexing Method for Transitive Relationships of Product Information

2008

To successfully use a relational database management system (RDBMS) as a repository for product information, the RDBMS must efficiently process and properly answer ontological queries. The key to processing the ontological queries is whether the various semantic relationships among the concepts of the product ontology are likewise well-processed. In particular, the transitive relationships (e.g., is-a, component-of relationships) such as ancestors-descendents, parents-children, and taxonomy of products must be processed successfully. We propose an efficient index using a numbering scheme (labeling scheme) to process queries over transitive relationships. (This paper is an extended version o…

Solutions to replace quantity with quality in science.

2012

In their recent letter, Joern Fischer and others [1xAcademia's obsession with quantity. Fischer, J. et al. Trends Ecol. Evol. 2012; 27: 463–474See all References[1] tackled one of the major problems in modern science: the obsession with quantity. Perspicaciously, they showed how targeting for quantity has faded out creativity and reflection from science. Fischer and others ended their letter with the words: ‘Starting with our own university departments (but not stopping there), it is time to take stock of what we are doing. We must recreate spaces for reflection, personal relationships, and depth. More does not equal better.’ Utopian as it may be, we applaud this statement.Unfortunately, Fi…

APPLICATION OF ADAPTIVE WAVELET NETWORKS FOR VIBRATION CONTROL OF BASE ISOLATED STRUCTURES

2010

Accepted version of an article from the journal: International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution & Information Processing. Official version article published as International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution & Information Processing, 2010 8(5), 773-791. doi: 10.1142/s0219691310003778 © World Scientific Publishing Company http:// http://www.worldscinet.com/ijwmip/ This paper presents an application of wavelet networks (WNs) in identification and control design for a class of structures equipped with a type of semiactive actuators, which are called magnetorheological (MR) dampers. The nonlinear model is identified based on a WN framework. Based on the technique of feedback linearizatio…

Análisis de género, productividad científica y colaboración de las profesoras universitarias de Ciencias de la Salud en la Comunidad Valenciana (2003…

2010

[EN] The article presents an analysis of the scholarly output of female professors in the fi eld of Health Science in the Autonomous Region of Valencia from 2003 to 2007,through bibliometric techniques and the application of a gender variable. The work attempted to identify how many women became large producers of scholarly articles compared to those who did not reach the same levels of productivity and impact. A total of 3,739 articles were retrieved during this period and the gender of all authors with more than 2 articles was identifi ed. Of these authors 2,774 (60.41 %) were male and 1,818 (39.59 %) were female. Focusing solely on large producers, the percentage of women publishing more…

The Impact of the Music Industry in Europe and the Business Models Involved in Its Value Chain

2021

AbstractThis chapter analyses the impact of the music industry in Europe. Although the direct and indirect impact of this industry in the European economy is significant, the sector is made up of different activities and companies, which compete and encounter diverse challenges in it. The current situation of these companies and organisations is presented through an analysis of the business models of several enterprises engaging in a variety of activities throughout the industry’s value chain, such as music production, publishing, distribution and exhibition. Moreover, we analyse digital transformation and the growth in rivalry detected in these activities.

Justification of ethical considerations in health economics – Merging the theories of Niklas Luhmann and Charles Taylor

2012

Dealing with ethics in health economics on socio-philosophical grounds is not yet well established. This paper shows how a liaison between the system theory of Luhmann and the philosophy of Taylor can be used to analyze and justify the incorporation of ethical considerations into health economics. One rationale for the incorporation of ethical consideration into health economics is the deficiencies in capturing all relevant needs of health system participants with common (welfare) economics. A second reason why health economics should account for ethical values is the fact that its decisions are already based on implicit value judgments. The impact of our approach is exemplified by the conc…
