Survey of neonatal respiratory care and surfactant administration in very preterm infants in the Italian neonatal network

INTRODUCTION: Variation of respiratory care is described between centers around the world. The Italian Neonatal Network (INN), as a national group of the Vermont-Oxford Network (VON) allows to perform a wide analysis of respiratory care in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: We analyzed the dataset of infants enrolled in the INN in 2009 and 2010 and, for surfactant administration only, from 2006 to 2010 from 83 participating centers. Humoral autoreactivity directed against surfactant protein-A (SP-A) in rheumatoid arthritis synovial fluids.

SUMMARY SP-A is found principally in the lung, and has been associated with lamellar bodies also found in the synovial joint. Both SP-A and C1q contain collagen-like regions, and SP-A and C1q have some structural similarities, both having a globular head region and a collagen-like tail. ABC A-subclass proteins: Gatekeepers of cellular phospho- and sphingolipid transport

During the past years, available evidence suggests that members of a novel family of structurally highly related multispan proteins, designated ABC A-subclass transporters, exert critical functions in the control of cellular lipid transport processes. Effect of Cholesterol on Electrostatics in Lipid−Protein Films of a Pulmonary Surfactant

We report the changes in the electrical properties of the lipid-protein film of pulmonary surfactant produced by excess cholesterol. Pulmonary surfactant (PS) is a complex lipid-protein mixture that forms a molecular film at the interface of the lung's epithelia. The defined molecular arrangement of the lipids and proteins of the surfactant film gives rise to the locally highly variable electrical surface potential of the interface, which becomes considerably altered in the presence of cholesterol. AbstractWe investigate the interfacial dynamics of a 2D self-organized mixed layer made of silica nanoparticles interacting with phospholipid (DPPC) monolayers at the air/water interface. This system has biological relevance, allowing investigation of toxicological effects of nanoparticles on model membranes and lung surfactants. Pulmonary surfactant (PS) constitutes the first line of host defense in the deep lung. Because of its high content of phospholipids and surfactant specific proteins, the interaction of inhaled nanoparticles (NPs) with the pulmonary surfactant layer is likely to form a corona that is different to the one formed in plasma. Supraglottic airway devices for surfactant treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: To compare surfactant administration via supraglottic airway device (SAD) vs. nasal CPAP alone or INSURE. Study design: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Clinicaltrials.gov was performed.
