Electrostrictive cross-phase modulation of periodic pulse trains in optical fibers

Electrostriction-induced cross-phase modulation between subsequent bits of a nonreturn-to-zero pulse train in optical fibers leads to nonlinear frequency shifts of opposite sign for the 1’s and the 0’s. Direct experimental measurements of the electrostrictive and Kerr-induced nonlinear phase shift across the bit profiles agree well with the theoretical modeling.

All-optical measurements of background, amplitude, and timing jitters for high speed pulse trains or PRBS sequences using autocorrelation function

International audience; We present a simple method for all-optical measurements of background, amplitude, and timing jitters of ultra high speed pulse trains or PRBS sequences using the jitter dependence of the intercorrelation-peak shape. This method is numerically and experimentally demonstrated on a 42.66 Gbit/s PRBS sequence and then applied to measure the jitter growths occurring during the propagation of a 160-GHz pulse train in a classical SMF/DCF dispersion map.

Application of circuit theory for extraction of water from oil

This paper discusses optimization of the performance of a pulsed dc electrostatic coalescer, a device that is used in the oil industry to increase the speed of separation of water from a water-in-oil emulsion. A previously found criterion for optimum performance, the charge hypothesis, is reviewed. Analysis by circuit theory shows that the performance may be improved through selecting an optimum switching frequency and duty ratio, improving the design of the pulse train generator, and making physical modifications to the coalescer apparatus. Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the associations between arterial stiffness indexes and immune-inflammatory markers in subjects with acute ischemic stroke with and without metabolic syndrome. Materials/Methods: We enrolled 130 patients with acute ischemic stroke and metabolic syndrome, 127 patients with acute ischemic stroke without metabolic syndrome and 120 control subjects without acute stroke. Ambiguity function analysis of pulse train propagation: applications to temporal Lau filtering

We use the periodic-signal ambiguity function for visualizing the intensity-spectrum evolution through propagation in a first-order dispersive medium. We show that the degree of temporal coherence of the optical source plays the role of a low-pass filter on the signal's ambiguity function. Based on this, we present a condition on the temporal Lau effect for filtering harmonics at fractions of the Talbot length. This result allows one to increase the repetition rate of a pulse train obtained from a sinusoidally phase-modulated CW signal.

Nonlinear spectral compression in fibre as a power-limiting device

Spectral compression (SC) by self-phase modulation in optical fibre has been known for a long time and has since been reported for various parameters [1]. In this paper, we analyse the impact of amplitude fluctuations and a degraded optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the seed pulses on the SC process by means of extensive nonlinear Schrodinger equation numerical simulation. Temporal effects in ultrashort pulsed beams focused by planar diffracting elements

The pulse envelope of an ultrashort pulsed beam is evaluated on the focal points of a Fresnel zone plate. The description of the field dynamics is given in terms of a diffraction-induced pulse train. Within these terms we follow an analytical procedure to characterize the temporal broadening observed at the principal focus, which is significant if the number of Fresnel zones exceeds the number of cycles in the pulse. For Gaussian-type envelopes, the focal field may be accurately expressed in a simple closed form. Investigations on the photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) counters

Abstract The photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) detectors has been measured by counting single photoelectron pulses of the detector output pulse train on a very fast storage oscilloscope. This result is compared with those obtained by the measurement of the achievable time resolution using the first photoelectron triggering technique.

All-fibered high-quality low duty-cycle picosecond high repetition rate pulse sources

In this work, we demonstrate all-fibered 20-GHz and 40-GHz picosecond pulse sources with duty cycles as low as 1/14. The pulse train is achieved via the high-quality compression of an initial sinusoidal beating through four segments of optical fibers. We investigate the limits of the scalability to higher repetition rates.

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the design of a high-repetition rate source delivering well-separated optical pulses due to the nonlinear compression of a dual-frequency beat signal within a cavity-less normally dispersive fiber-based setup.
