Blattabacteria, the endosymbionts of cockroaches, have small genome sizes and high genome copy numbers.

Summary Blattabacteria are intracellular endosymbionts of cockroaches and primitive termites that belong to the class Flavobacteria and live only in specialized cells in the abdominal fat body of their hosts. In the present study we determined genome sizes as well as genome copy numbers for the endosymbionts of three cockroach species, Blattella germanica, Periplaneta americana and Blatta orientalis. The sole presence of blattabacteria in the fat body was demonstrated by rRNA-targeting techniques. The genome sizes of the three blattabacteria were determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Microbiological quality of carbonated drinking water produced with in-home carbonation systems.

The microbiological quality of carbonated water produced with tap water in commercial in-home carbonation systems was determined, the results being discussed in the context of the microbiological quality of the tap water used, the properties of the drink makers, and the procedures of preparation and washing of various parts of the appliance. The last-mentioned data were received from each participant of the study by questionnaire. Escherichia coli, coliforms, fecal streptococci and spore-forming sulphite-reducing anaerobes were used as indicators for the hygienic quality of the water. Characterisation of a Cryptosporidium parvum-specific cDNA clone and detection of parasite DNA in mucosal scrapings of infected mice.

A cDNA library was constructed using total RNA extracted from oocysts and sporozoites of the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum. The expression library was screened with an anti-C. parvum antiserum and a clone, Cp3.4, with a 2043 bp insert, was extracted. Southern blot analysis demonstrated a single copy gene that was located on a 1.6 Mb chromosome. The gene was found to be C. parvum specific as Cp3.4 did not cross-hybridise with chromosomal DNA from three other apicomplexan parasites. The cDNA encodes a polypeptide with a predicted membrane helix at its C-terminal end which is flanked by stretches of acidic amino acids. Pulsed EPR determination of water accessibility to spin-labeled amino acid residues in LHCIIb.

Membrane proteins reside in a structured environment in which some of their residues are accessible to water, some are in contact with alkyl chains of lipid molecules, and some are buried in the protein. Water accessibility of residues may change during folding or function-related structural dynamics. Several techniques based on the combination of pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) with site-directed spin labeling can be used to quantify such water accessibility. Contact and contactless diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: potential for recovery monitoring of vascular lesions after intense pulsed light treatment.

Optical fiber contact probe diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and remote multispectral imaging methods in the spectral range of 400 to 1100 nm were used for skin vascular malformation assessment and recovery tracing after treatment by intense pulsed light. The results confirmed that oxy-hemoglobin relative changes and the optical density difference between lesion and healthy skin in the spectral region 500 to 600 nm may be successfully used for objective appraisal of the therapy effect. Determination of New Radical Species in Ammonium Tartrate Dosimeters by CW- and Pulsed-EPR Techniques

Samples of ammonium tartrate irradiated with doses of about 0.1–1 kGy by different beams of ionizing radiation (60Co–γ, 19 MeV protons and 62 MeV per nucleon carbon ions) were studied by continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (cw-EPR) and by pulse-EPR techniques. Careful analysis of the cw-EPR and of the echo-detected EPR spectra allowed the identification of a second radical in the system besides the already known radical formed at high temperature by an hydrogen elimination at C(2) position [M. Brustolon et al., Res. Chem. Int 4:359, 1996]. The spectrum of the radical is compatible with that of a radical obtained by hydroxyl elimination.

Experimental investigation of low-frequency pulsed Lorentz force influence on the motion of Galinstan melt

Abstract The paper presents the results of the numerical and physical experiments, aimed at assessing the influence of pulsed force of electromagnetic field on the melt motion and the fluid velocities. The experiment was performed on the eutectic alloy Galinstan in the cylindrical volume, where an ultrasonic Doppler velocimeter was employed for velocity measurements under conditions of pulsed and steady EM field application. A numerical simulation of the melt flow, forced by the steady EM force, involved a 2D axisymmetric model. The k-e turbulence model was used to obtain the information about the melt velocities.
