Exchange rates expectations and chaotic dynamics: a replication study

Abstract In this paper the author analyzes the behavior of exchange rates expectations for four currencies, by considering a re-calculation and an extension of Resende and Zeidan (Expectations and chaotic dynamics: empirical evidence on exchange rates, Economics Letters, 2008). Considering Lyapunov exponent-based tests results, they are not supportive of chaos in exchange rates expectations, although the so-called 0–1 test strongly supports the chaos hypothesis.

On differences and similarities in the analysis of Lorenz, Chen, and Lu systems

Currently it is being actively discussed the question of the equivalence of various Lorenzlike systems and the possibility of universal consideration of their behavior (Algaba et al., 2013a,b, 2014b,c; Chen, 2013; Chen and Yang, 2013; Leonov, 2013a), in view of the possibility of reduction of such systems to the same form with the help of various transformations. In the present paper the differences and similarities in the analysis of the Lorenz, the Chen and the Lu systems are discussed. It is shown that the Chen and the Lu systems stimulate the development of new methods for the analysis of chaotic systems. Open problems are discussed. peerReviewed

Is It Considered Violence? The Acceptability of Physical Punishment of Children in Europe

This study analyzes correlates of the acceptability of physical punishment of children in Europe. The design was a three-level ordinal logistic regression of 10,812 people nested within 208 localities (cities), nested within 14 countries of the European Union. Results showed that higher levels of acceptability were reported by men, the older, the less educated, and those who perceived that violence against children was less frequent in their own country. A number of studies reviewed here show that those who are exposed to negative child-rearing practices varying from punitive and lax parenting to severe punishment and abuse in childhood tend to be antisocial, aggressive and commit violent crimes later in life. Both the record approach (Widom) studying later outcomes among abused children and the retrospective approach (Lewis) studying violent childhood experiences among offenders provide support for the violence breeds violence hypothesis. The Chinese artist Chen Qiulin has been taking displacement and the resulting unrest in people’s identity as her persistent theme since the early 1990s. Focusing on a series of her works made since 2004 dealing explicitly with tofu and Chinese surnames, this paper examines her exploration of identities in transition in the context of China’s mass urbanization and globalization. By showing the artist’s conceptual evolution, her preference for materials and mediums, and her exhibition strategy, this paper explores two issues. Struktūra un fotofizikālie procesi 0D un 1D InGaN kompozītu materiālos

Šajā disertācijā tiek aprakstīti strukturālās un fotofizikālās MOCVD izaudzēto GaN nanovadu (NV) un InGaN kvantu punktu (KP) īpašības. Abos gadījumos ir parādīts, ka ex-situ RHEED mērījumi ir iespējami un sniedz kvalitatīvu informāciju par struktūru. Kombinācijā ar citām metodēm, pirmkārt, ir parādīts, ka nemetāliskā katalizatora veicinātā GaN NV īpašības, kad sintezēts uz GaN (0001) virsmas, atšķiras no tradicionāli iegūtajiem. Šinī gadījumā katalizators lokalizējas pie nanovadu pamatnes nevis tā galā un augšanas virziens ir atšķirīgs no kristalogrāfiskās c-ass, rezultātā iegūstot semipolārās NV struktūras.
