Sensitive determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water samples using monolithic capillary solid-phase extraction and on-line thermal de…

2011

A methacrylate-based monolithic capillary column has been evaluated for the preconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental water samples. For this purpose, the monolyte was in situ synthesized in a 6cm×0.32mm id fused-silica capillary. The microextraction unit was fitted to a micro-HPLC pump to pass 10mL of sample. The isolated pollutants were eluted by means of 10μL of methanol, the organic phase being directly collected in a specific interface that can be fitted to the injection port of the gas chromatograph without modification. The interface allows the on-line thermal desorption of the PAHs, avoiding the dilution and providing enough sensitivity to reach …

Global simulation of semivolatile organic compounds – development and evaluation of the MESSy submodel SVOC (v1.0)

2019

Abstract. The new submodel SVOC for the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) was developed and applied within the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model to simulate the atmospheric cycling and air–surface exchange processes of semivolatile organic pollutants. Our focus is on four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of largely varying properties. Some new features in input and physics parameterizations of tracers were tested: emission seasonality, the size discretization of particulate-phase tracers, the application of poly-parameter linear free-energy relationships in gas–particle partitioning, and re-volatilization from land and sea surfaces. The results indicate that the pre…

Passive sampling of PAHs in indoor air in Nepal

1999

PAHs were sampled in ten homes in the Makwanpur region, Nepal. SPMDs and moss bags (Sphagnum girgensohnii) were used as passive samplers. Soot particles on the SPMD surfaces were also analyzed for PAHs. The overall PAH concentrations in SPMDs were significantly higher than those in moss bags. Total PAH mean concentrations of ten houses were 535μg/g lipid for SPMDs and 7.2 μg/g moss (dw) for moss bags. Ratios of phenanthrene/anthracene in indoor SPMDs and particulate matter varied from 2.9 to 3.5 and ratios of fluoranthene/pyrene varied from 1.1 to 1.4. The values for moss bags were respectively 1.7–3.6 and 0.8–2.4. These ratios indicate that the PAHs are from combustion origin. The PAH conc…

Multicomponent polymeric micelles based on polyaspartamide as tunable fluorescent pH-window biosensors

2010

Abstract PHEA-PEG 5000 -C 16 is a polyaspartamide polymer with appended hydrophilic PEG 5000 functions and hydrophobic n-C 16 units forming biocompatible micelles with a CAC as low as 1.8 × 10 −7  M. The protonation and acidity constants of the polymer's amino and carboxylic groups have been determined by potentiometric titrations at five different concentrations higher than CAC, finding concentration-independent values. Viscosity and polarity of the micellar core have been investigated by means of fluorescent probes, finding local values comparable to those of pure toluene and to the core of sodium dodecyl sulphate micelles, independently on the protonation degree of the polymer. The fluor…

A fluorescent molecular sensor for pH windows in traditional and polymeric biocompatible micelles: comicellization of anionic species to shift and re…

2011

A new approach is presented to obtain fluorescent sensors for pH windows that work in water and under biomimetic conditions. A single molecule that features all-covalently linked components is used, thus making it capable of working as a fluorescent sensor with an OFF/ON/OFF response to pH value. The components are a tertiary amine, a pyridine, and a fluorophore (pyrene). The forms with both protonated bases or both neutral bases quench the pyrene fluorescence, whereas the form with the neutral pyridine and protonated amine groups is fluorescent. The molecular sensor is also equipped with a long alkyl chain to make it highly hydrophobic in all its protonated and unprotonated forms, that is,…

DNA Modification Induced After Metabolic Activation of the Potent Carcinogen Dibenzo[a, l]pyrene in V79 Chinese Hamster Cells Stably Expressing Singl…

2000

Abstract The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) dibenzo[a, l]pyrene (DB[a, l]P) has been found to be an environmental pollutant and, considering the available data from rodent bioassays, it represents the most carcinogenic member compound of the class of PAH yet discovered. To sort out the contribution of individual cytochromes P450 (P450) in the metabolic activation of this PAH, V79 cells stably expressing a single P450 isoform were treated with DB[a, l]P or enantiomeric DB[a, l]P-11,12-dihydrodiols (diols). Subsequent analysis of the DNA adducts formed revealed substantial differences in the adduct pattern and the total DNA binding depending on the cell line used. Human P450 1B1 effect…

Species-dependent Metabolism of Benzo[c]phenanthrene and Dibenzo[a, l]pyrene by Various CYP450 Isoforms

2000

Abstract The metabolism of benzo[c]phenanthrene (B[c]Ph) and dibenzo[a, l]-pyrene (DB[a, l]P) with various CYP isoforms including rat 1A1, 1A2, 2B1, 2E1, human 1A1, 1A2, 1B1, 2A6, 3A4, 2E1 and fish 1A expressed in Chinese hamster V79 cells has been compared. Major differences in the catalytic activities and in the regioselectivity of the eleven CYP isoforms with B[c]Ph and DB[a, l]P as substrates have been observed. There have been found substantially species-specific differences between homologous CYP isoforms at least when human, rat and fish are compared, which have to be taken into account when animal experiments are extrapolated to human. In particular, complementary catalytic activiti…

π-Extended Pyrene-Fused Double [7]Carbohelicene as a Chiral Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon

2019

A π-extended double [7]carbohelicene 2 with fused pyrene units was synthesized, revealing considerable intra- and intermolecular π–π interactions as confirmed with X-ray crystallography. As compared to the previous double [7]carbohelicene 1, the π-extended homologue 2 demonstrated considerably red-shifted absorption with an onset at 645 nm (1: 550 nm) corresponding to a smaller optical gap of 1.90 eV (1: 2.25 eV). A broad near-infrared emission from 600 to 900 nm with a large Stokes shift of ∼100 nm (2.3 × 103 cm–1) was recorded for 2, implying formation of an intramolecular excimer upon excitation, which was corroborated with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, 2 revea…

Characterization of 10 trinucleotide microsatellite loci in the Critically Endangered Pyrenean yam Borderea chouardii (Dioscoreaceae)

2003

The low levels of allozymic variability found in the Critically Endangered Borderea chouardii prompted us to develop microsatellite markers to assess the genetic variability and population structure for the adequate conservation management of this species. A (CTT) n enriched partial genomic library was constructed. Ten polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from it, rendering 51 alleles in 47 individuals analysed. The allelic pattern observed for all of the loci with more than two alleles suggests that B. chouardii is tetraploid.

Assessment of the bioactivity of creosote-contaminated sediment by liver biotransformation system of rainbow trout.

1999

A sediment site in the Lake Jamsanvesi (municipality of Petajavesi, Finland) contaminated by creosote was investigated to assess the possible ecotoxicological risks it may cause to benthic animals, including ones which may arise due to physical measures in remediating the site. It is suggested that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are bioavailable to fish and other aquatic animals during exposure to contaminated water, sediment, and food. In order to assess toxicological risks of sediment contents to fish, juvenile rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss) were intraperitoneally dosed with extracts of the creosote-contaminated sediments and their elutriates. This was compared to pristine …
