Biomonitoring exposure assessment to contemporary pesticides in a school children population of Spain
2013
The exposure to pesticides amongst school-aged children (6-11 years old) was assessed in this study. One hundred twenty-five volunteer children were selected from two public schools located in an agricultural and in an urban area of Valencia Region, Spain. Twenty pesticide metabolites were analyzed in children's urine as biomarkers of exposure to organophosphate (OP) insecticides, synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, and herbicides. These data were combined with a survey to evaluate the main predictors of pesticide exposure in the children's population. A total of 15 metabolites were present in the urine samples with detection frequencies (DF) ranging from 5% to 86%. The most frequently detec…
Esterase inhibition by synergists in the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis.
2010
BACKGROUND: Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is among the most important crop pests in the south-eastern region of Spain. Its increasing resistance to insecticides constitutes a serious problem, and understanding the mechanisms involved is therefore of great interest. Use of synergists to inhibit the enzymes involved in insecticide detoxification is widely used to determine their responsibility for insecticide resistance. However, they do not always act as intended or expected, and caution must be exercised when interpreting synergist results. RESULTS: Laboratory-selected strains of WFT were used to analyse the effects of the synergists piperonyl butoxide …

Effect of deltamethrin (pyrethroid insecticide) on two clones of Daphnia magna (Crustacea, Cladocera): A proteomic investigation.
2014
8 pages; International audience; Deltamethrin is a class II pyrethroid insecticide commonly used in agriculture. It is hazardous to freshwater ecosystems, especially for the cladoceran Daphnia magna (Straus 1820). The results of our previous studies based on acute and chronic ecotoxicity experiments revealed differences in the sensitivity between two different clones. In this work, to investigate deltamethrin toxicity mechanisms in two clones of D. magna, we used a proteomic approach in order to analyze changes in protein expression profiles after 48h of exposure. We detected 1339 spots; then applying statistical criteria (ANOVA p<0.001 and minimum fold change 1.5), only 128 spots were sign…
Comparison of two partial least squares infrared spectrometric methods for the quality control of pediculosis lotions.
2006
Two vibrational spectroscopy procedures have been developed and compared for the direct and simultaneous determination of piperonyl butoxide and tetramethrin, the active ingredients of alcoholic capillary lotions, for hair pediculosis diseases. Nine lotions, purchased from the Spanish market, were analyzed using both, attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and transmission FT-IR measurements, and based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) multivariate calibration. A reduced set of 15 matched standards (11 for calibration and 4 for validation) was employed using both measurement modes. The spectral wave number ranges between 1757 and 1712 cm(-1) was selected to determine tetramethrin by bot…
Sub-lethal effects of deltamethrin on walking behaviour and response to host kairomone of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis.
2002
The lethal doses of the pyrethroid deltamethrin were estimated for the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), and the sub-lethal effects of an LD25 on female walking behaviour were evaluated. Linear speed of treated parasitoids was reduced compared with that of untreated ones for a period of up to 24 h. The sub-lethal effects of deltamethrin on parasitoid response to patches contaminated by a contact kairomone from its host, Nezara viridula L (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), was also evaluated. Both treated and untreated parasitoids responded to host-contaminated patches by increasing residence time and decreasing linear speed. However, treated females showed …
Esterase isoenzymes and insecticide resistance in Frankliniella occidentalis populations from the south-east region of Spain.
2008
BACKGROUND:Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is among the most important crop pests in the south-east region of Spain; its increasing resistance to insecticides constitutes a serious problem, and understanding the mechanisms involved is therefore of great interest. To this end, F. occidentalis populations, collected from the field at different locations in south-east Spain, were studied in terms of total esterase activity and esterase isoenzyme pattern. RESULTS: Individual thrips extracts were analysed by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and stained for esterase activity with the model substrate α-naphthyl acetate. Significant correlations were found between resistance t…
