Deciphering genomic heterogeneity and the internal composition of tumour activities through a hierarchical factorisation model
2021
Genomic heterogeneity constitutes one of the most distinctive features of cancer diseases, limiting the efficacy and availability of medical treatments. Tumorigenesis emerges as a strongly stochastic process, producing a variable landscape of genomic configurations. In this context, matrix factorisation techniques represent a suitable approach for modelling such complex patterns of variability. In this work, we present a hierarchical factorisation model conceived from a systems biology point of view. The model integrates the topology of molecular pathways, allowing to simultaneously factorise genes and pathways activity matrices. The protocol was evaluated by using simulations, showing a hi…
Fixed Points for Multivalued Convex Contractions on Nadler Sense Types in a Geodesic Metric Space
2019
In 1969, based on the concept of the Hausdorff metric, Nadler Jr. introduced the notion of multivalued contractions. He demonstrated that, in a complete metric space, a multivalued contraction possesses a fixed point. Later on, Nadler&rsquo
Entry-Item-Quantity-ABC Analysis-Based Multitype Cigarette Fast Sorting System
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/847591 Open access Numerous items, small order, and frequent delivery are the characteristics of many distribution centers. Such characteristics generally increase the operating costs of the distribution center. To remedy this problem, this study employs the Entry-Item-Quantity (EIQ) method to identify the characteristic of the cigarette distribution center and further analyzes the importance degree of customers and the frequently ordered products by means of EQ/EN/IQ-B/IK statistic charts. Based on these analyses as well as the total rep…

Archetypal analysis: an alternative to clustering for unsupervised texture segmentation
2019
Texture segmentation is one of the main tasks in image applications, specifically in remote sensing, where the objective is to segment high-resolution images of natural landscapes into different cover types. Often the focus is on the selection of discriminant textural features, and although these are really fundamental, there is another part of the process that is also influential, partitioning different homogeneous textures into groups. A methodology based on archetype analysis (AA) of the local textural measurements is proposed. AA seeks the purest textures in the image and it can find the borders between pure textures, as those regions composed of mixtures of several archetypes. The prop…
Automatic detection and classification of retinal vascular landmarks
2014
The main contribution of this paper is introducing a method to distinguish between different landmarks of the retina: bifurcations and crossings. The methodology may help in differentiating between arteries and veins and is useful in identifying diseases and other special pathologies, too. The method does not need any special skills, thus it can be assimilated to an automatic way for pinpointing landmarks; moreover it gives good responses for very small vessels. A skeletonized representation, taken out from the segmented binary image (obtained through a preprocessing step), is used to identify pixels with three or more neighbors. Then, the junction points are classified into bifurcations or…
Estimation of fibre orientation from digital images
2001
In this paper, estimation of fibre orientation is studied for fibre systems observable as a blurred greyscale image. The estimation method is based on scaled variograms observed along a set of sampling lines in different directions. The parameters of the orientation distribution are obtained numerically. Simulated data are used to study the statistical properties of the method.
Forecasting Latin America’s Country Risk Scores by Means of a Dynamic Diffusion Model
2013
Over the last years, worldwide financial market instability has shaken confidence in global economies. Global financial crisis and changes in sovereign debts ratings have affected the Latin American financial markets and their economies. However, Latin American s relative resilience to the more acute rise in risk seen in other regions like Europe during last years is offering investors new options for improving risk-return trade-offs. Therefore, forecasting the future of economic situation involves high levels of uncertainty. The Country Risk Score (CRS) represents a broadly used indicator to measure the current situation of a country regarding measures of economic, political, and financial…
Fuzzy modeling and control for a class of inverted pendulum system
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/936868 Open Access Focusing on the issue of nonlinear stability control system about the single-stage inverted pendulum, the T-S fuzzy model is employed. Firstly, linear approximation method would be applied into fuzzy model for the single-stage inverted pendulum. At the same time, for some nonlinear terms which could not be dealt with via linear approximation method, this paper will adopt fan range method into fuzzy model. After the T-S fuzzy model, the PDC technology is utilized to design the fuzzy controller secondly. Numerical simulation res…
Lymph node metastasis in lower lip squamous cell carcinoma in relation to tumour size, histologic variables and p27Kip1 protein expression.
2003
We studied a consecutive series of 95 patients undergoing radical surgical resection of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) to assess the correlation between lymph node status and several prognostic variables, such as sex and age, tumour size, histologic grading, maximal microscopic tumour thickness, perineural infiltration and p27Kip1 protein status, to see which of these might be predictive of the development of lymph node metastases. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between node status and tumour size, histological grading, maximal thickness, perineural invasion and p27Kip1 protein expression; additionally to node metastasis, low p27Kip1 protein expressio…
