Non-marine invertebrate trace fossils from the Tertiary Calatayud- Teruel Basin, NE Spain. Reply
2021
We thank the comments of Dr Calzada. We think that this kind of discussions is very healthy to the Paleontology and it would be necessary to do it more frequently, so that thanks again for your example. It is true that some of the descriptions of ichnofossils in our work need further discussion and comments, but when we analysed several poorly-preserved specimens (such as the so-called Spongeliomorpha isp.) we preferred to make a quick introduction and describe them in open nomenclature. It was beyond the scope of our paper to make a revision of the ichnogenus with this kind of material, but we hope that Calzada's comments and our reply will improve some ideas concerning the ichnogenus Spon…
Gliridae from the late Oligocene of the province of Teruel (Spain)
2020
The Calatayud-Teruel Basin is one of the richest areas of Spain, when fossil mammals are concerned. Around the village of Montalban many lower Oligocene fossil mammal localities are known and several upper Oligocene localities with rich micromammal faunas are present between the villages of Vivel del Rio Martin and Martin del Rio. Previous papers on these upper Oligocene localities were dedicated to the Cricetidae and to the zapodid Plesiosminthus , in this work we describe the fauna of Gliridae, composed of the genera Gliravus , Butseloglis , Peridyromys , Microdyromys and Paraglis . Among these the latter genus is very poorly represented. Microdyromys is of special importance becaus…
Conodont association of the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary interval of the Donets Basin, Ukraine
2018
Ten sections spanning the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary interval were studied in the Donets Basin. Six of them contain most representative conodont and foraminifer associations. In this paper we focused on three the most complete sections that include stratigraphically important conodont species, which belong to the Declinognathodus, Idiognathoides, Idiognathodus, Neognathodus, “Streptognathodus”, Mesogondolella and Diplognathodus genera. The majority of those species are widely distributed, which makes the correlation to other areas reliable. Two biotic events in conodont evolution were discovered in these sections. Two conodont lineages established here are considered as potential markers…
Authigenic phase formation and microbial activity control Zr, Hf, and rare earth element distributions in deep-sea brine sediments
2014
Abstract. Sediments collected from hypersaline and anoxic deep-sea basins in the eastern Mediterranean (Thetis, Kryos, Medee, and Tyro) were characterised in terms of their mineralogical composition, the distributions of rare earth elements (REE), Zr, and Hf and their content of microbial DNA. We identified two major mineralogical fractions: one fraction of detritic origin was composed of quartz, gypsum, and low-Mg calcite bioclasts (with 0 < Mg < 0.07%) and another fraction of authigenic origin constituted of halite, dolomite, high-Mg calcite (with a Mg content of up to 22%) and rare bischofite and showed a textural evidence of microbial assemblages. We found that in the Medee and Ty…
Towards an environmental assessment model of palaeontological and archaeological heritage in the Autonomous Valencian Community without comparative t…
2019
The deficient management of the paleontological heritage through the environmental impact assessment procedures from the Valencian public administrations, linked mainly to the lack of competent technical means in the matter, results in an almost abandonment of it. On the contrary, the archaeological heritage has a series of perfectly structured tools that allow any possible impact on it regarding projects and actions subject to environmental impact assessment that can be detected and corrected. The damage that this situation creates results in the abandonment and almost absolute lack of protection of the palaeontological heritage in the Valencian Community. Despite how much has been written…
Improving geoconservation of the palaeontological heritage through a semiotic vision
2019
The panoply of reasons that may attract people to fossils, which result from the meaning they attribute to these palaeontological objects, may contribute to endangering of the integrity of the fossil record. Semiotics can be of great help to assist geoconservation actions, usually based only on expertise statements, and are of particular relevance in palaeontological heritage inventory, evaluation, conservation, valuation and monitoring procedures. This work argues that fossils can be envisaged as signs displaying different meanings among experts and non-specialists. Such meanings support the heritage contents and values attributable to any palaeontological object and are affected by the re…

2021
20 years at campus: heritage assessment update for Somosaguas fossil geosite (Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid)
2019
The palaeontological heritage evaluation of the Somosaguas fossil geosite has been revised on the basis of scientifi c and sociocultural criteria. By means of this study have been proposed four new criteria that arise from new scientifi c and social trends as well as technological advances. A temporal comparison has been established with previous evaluations obtained in the years 2000 and 2012. The results indicated an increase in the initial score of the geosite in each revision. Our study shows the relevance of palaeontological heritage evaluations as useful tools to improve fossil geosites management.
Combined numerical and experimental study of microstructure and permeability in porous granular media
2020
<div> <div> <div> <p>Fluid flow on different scales is of interest for several Earth science disciplines like petrophysics, hydrogeology and volcanology. To parameterize fluid flow in large-scale numerical simulations (e.g. groundwater and volcanic systems), flow properties on the microscale need to be considered. For this purpose experimental and numerical investigations of flow through porous media over a wide range of porosities are necessary. In the present study we sinter glass bead media with&#160;various porosities, representing shallow depth crustal sediments.&#160;The microstructure, namely effective porosity …
