Turtles on the trash track: loggerhead turtles exposed to floating plastic in the Mediterranean Sea

2019

Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) spend most of their life in large marine areas occupying a variety of habitats where they are exposed to different types of threats. Among these, marine litter is known to pose a risk of entanglement or ingestion. Areas of risk exposure can be identified where the species overlap with litter accumulations, but gathering data on this highly mobile species and marine litter, especially in high sea areas, is challenging. Here we analysed five years of sea turtle and marine litter data collected by a network of research bodies along fixed trans-border transects in the Mediterranean Sea. Ferries were used as observation platforms to gather systematic data on …

Intelligent Cloud Storage Management for Layered Tiers

2018

Today, the cloud offers a large array of possibilities for storage, with this flexibility comes also complexity. This complexity stems from the variety of storage mediums, such as, blob storage or NoSQL tables, and also from the different cost tiers within these systems. A strategic thinking to navigate this complex cloud storage landscape is important, not only for cost saving but also for prioritizing information, this prioritization has wider implications in other domains such as the Big Data realm, especially for governance and efficiency. In this paper we propose a strategy centered around probabilistic graphical model (PGM), this heuristic oriented management and organizational strate…

Unidirectional probabilistic direct control for deferrable loads

2014

International audience; The idea of harnessing the inherent flexibility in demand of many types of electric loads has been largely discussed in the last years for coping with the need to maintain the energy demand-supply balance. In particular, the fine tuning of the operation conditions of different thermostatic loads (such as air-conditioning, refrigerators, etc.) has appeared as the most natural solution for load control with minimal user discomfort. In this paper we focus on an alternative approach: deploying simple open-loop control strategies for deferrable loads with minimal communication overhead. The idea is to send a multicast control message to a group of users, on the basis of t…

Do Women Prefer More Complex Music around Ovulation?

2012

The evolutionary origins of music are much debated. One theory holds that the ability to produce complex musical sounds might reflect qualities that are relevant in mate choice contexts and hence, that music is functionally analogous to the sexually-selected acoustic displays of some animals. If so, women may be expected to show heightened preferences for more complex music when they are most fertile. Here, we used computer-generated musical pieces and ovulation predictor kits to test this hypothesis. Our results indicate that women prefer more complex music in general; however, we found no evidence that their preference for more complex music increased around ovulation. Consequently, our f…

Secure and scalable dataprocessing and communications for an Animal Tracking System

2003

Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2003 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Modern technology is constantly being employed in new fields, by new industries and people. The cost of advanced technological equipment decreases continously, and equipment that was reserved for people and corporations with a lot of money has now become household products. This enables many interesting ideas and projects, Kitron Development’s radiocollar project being one of them. Kitron Development is involved in a project to track the position of animals by substituting the traditional bell collar with a collar that contains a GPS receiver. The collar transmits its position to a base station using…

Identification of Copy Number Variations and Genetic Diversity in Italian Insular Sheep Breeds

2022

Simple Summary The aim of this work is to identify CNVs and perform a CNV-based population genetics analysis in five Italian sheep breeds (Barbaresca, Comisana, Pinzirita, Sarda, and Valle del Belìce). We identified 10,207 CNVs and 365 CNV regions (CNVRs). The different approaches used to disclose the genetic relationship showed that the five breeds tend to cluster in distinct groups. Gene enrichment was described for the 37 CNVRs selected considering the top 10%. Gene Ontology analysis showed that several of these genes are involved in lipid metabolism, immune response, and the olfactory pathway. CNVs represent valuable molecular resources to provide useful information for separating the p…

Genome-Wide Patterns of Homozygosity Reveal the Conservation Status in Five Italian Goat Populations.

2021

The application of genomic technologies has facilitated the assessment of genomic inbreeding based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In this study, we computed several runs of homozygosity (ROH) parameters to investigate the patterns of homozygosity using Illumina Goat SNP50 in five Italian local populations: Argentata dell’Etna (N = 48), Derivata di Siria (N = 32), Girgentana (N = 59), Maltese (N = 16) and Messinese (N = 22). The ROH results showed well-defined differences among the populations. A total of 3687 ROH segments &gt

Connecting Granular and Topological Relations through Description Logics

2021

Granularity deals with organizing in greater or lesser detail data, information, and knowledge that resides at a granular level. This organization is carried out according to certain criteria, which thereby provide a context view or dimension also called granular perspective. Topological relations express spatial associations among geospatial features (points, polylines, and polygons); they represent a horizontal spatial analysis. The two domains allow scientists to conceive different perspectives of the world. In this article, we aim to combine the two representations through Description Logics (DL) rules to relate granular (vertical representation) and geospatial topological (horizontal r…

Effects of migratory status and habitat on the prevalence and intensity of infection by haemoparasites in passerines in eastern Spain

2013
