An Efficient Cooperative Smearing Technique for Degraded Historical Documents Images Segmentation

2020

Segmentation is one of the critical steps in historical document image analysis systems that determines the quality of the search, understanding, recognition and interpretation processes. It allows isolating the objects to be considered and separating the regions of interest (paragraphs, lines, words and characters) from other entities (figures, graphs, tables, etc.). This stage follows the thresholding, which aims to improve the quality of the document and to extract its background from its foreground, also for detecting and correcting the skew that leads to redress the document. Here, a hybrid method is proposed in order to locate words and characters in both handwritten and printed docu…

Assessing the Level of Collaborative Writing in a Wiki-Based Environment: A Case Study in Teacher Education

2016

Wikis have received the last few years a growing interest as tools for supporting collaborative writing in teacher education. This paper reports on results from a case study that aimed at assessing the level of collaborative writing among teacher students. Taking advantages of wiki affordances, the proposed theoretical framework uses a taxonomy of category actions that can be carried out on wiki. These provide a powerful instrument to analyze students’ individual contributions to the wiki and level of collaborative writing among students as well. Implications for teacher preparation and professional development are drawn from the results and future research actions are envisaged to enhance …

Galerías de «mujeres ilustres» o el sinuoso camino de la excepción a la norma cotidiana (ss. XV-XVIII).

2000

Between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries, collections of «illustrious women» were a very widely spread genre all over Europe. Humanistic and courtly in their origins, they were linked to the discourse of women´s «excellence» and they transmitted the values of privilege and aristocratic ethics. At the same time, they showed ambivalent, disturbing and powerful images of «women on top». The fact that its popularity seems to have increased during the eighteenth century and that they took more widespread forms such as articles in the periodicals raises interesting questions about the meanings those images, opposed in many ways to Enlightenment values and attitudes, could have for eight…

Reviving the lost spaces under urban highways and bridges: an empirical study

2019

Purpose The fast development of urban movement infrastructures has created neglected urban places in cities. This study aims to provide users’ preferences for designing lost spaces that are a by-product of elevated urban highways (UHs) and bridges to develop a conceptual model for better environmental design. Design/methodology/approach This research is conducted by a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase, to explore the citizen’s environmental preferences based on the Q-sort technique and in-depth interviews, the ideas of 50 users were considered up to data saturation. The preferences of people for designs under urban bridges were extracted by conten…

À la recherche du lexique de la gestion hôtelière : de la magdalena de Proust a la WebQuest

2020

This paper describes the creation and design of a series of activities aimed at learning the hotel management lexicon in French within a professional context. The tool used to frame these activities is the WebQuest, based on the principles of socioconstructivism and focused on promoting learning by discovery, among other aims. Accordingly, the action research methodology and after the Webquest implementation with a group of university students taking the French for Specific Purposes subject in a professional context, the study results are presented. Finally,  the following conclusions derived from the results obtained allow: (1) to verify the adequacy and effectiveness of the tool created, …

Hope and equilibrium in the dystopian world of The Hunger Games

2021

This paper provides evidence of the fruitfulness of combining analytical categories from Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis for the analysis of complex literary characterizations. It does so through a detailed study of the “tributes”, i.e. the randomly selected children who have to fight to death in a nationally televised show, in The Hunger Games. The study proves the effectiveness of such categories to provide an analytically accurate picture of the dystopian world depicted in the novel, which is revealed to include a paradoxical element of hope. The type of dehumanization that characterizes the dystopian society of Panem is portrayed through an internally consistent se…

A New Paradigm in Interactive Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization

2020

Over the years, scalarization functions have been used to solve multiobjective optimization problems by converting them to one or more single objective optimization problem(s). This study proposes a novel idea of solving multiobjective optimization problems in an interactive manner by using multiple scalarization functions to map vectors in the objective space to a new, so-called preference incorporated space (PIS). In this way, the original problem is converted into a new multiobjective optimization problem with typically fewer objectives in the PIS. This mapping enables a modular incorporation of decision maker’s preferences to convert any evolutionary algorithm to an interactive one, whe…

Comparing the Quality of Neural Machine Translation and Professional Post-Editing

2019

This empirical corpus study explores the quality of neural machine translations (NMT) and their post-edits (NMTPE) at the German Department of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) by evaluating NMT outputs, NMTPE, and respective revisions (REV) with the automatic error annotation tool Hjerson (Popovic 2011) and the more fine-grained manual MQM framework (Lommel 2014). Results show that quality assurance measures by post-editors and revisors at the DGT are most often necessary for lexical errors. More specifically, if post-editors correct mistranslations, terminology or stylistic errors in an NMT sentence, revisors are likely to correct the same type of error i…

Speaking out against everyday sexism : Gender and epistemics in accusations of “mansplaining”

2021

In everyday interaction, subtle manifestations of sexism often pass unacknowledged and become internalised and thus perceived as “natural” conduct. The introduction of new vocabularies for referring to previously unnamed sexist conduct would presumably enable individuals to start problematising hitherto unchallengeable sexism. In this paper, we investigate whether and how these vocabularies empower people to speak out against sexism. We focus on the use of the term “mansplaining” which, although coined over 10 years ago, remains controversial and contested. Using Conversation Analysis and Membership Categorisation Analysis, this paper excavates the interactional methods individuals use to f…
