Human apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I)-derived amyloidosis can present with either wild-type (Wt) protein deposits in atherosclerotic plaques or as a hereditary form in which apoA-I variants deposit causing multiple organ failure. More than 15 single amino acid replacement amyloidogenic apoA-I variants have been described, but the molecular mechanisms involved in amyloid-associated pathology remain largely unknown. We are reporting two new mixed valent Co(ii)/Co(iii) polynuclear complexes, {Co II 6 Co III 3 } and {Co II Co III 4 }, bearing different amount of Co(ii) ions in their cores, through the employment of the multidentate triethanolamine (teaH 3 ) ligand in different stoichiometric ratios. We present a complete picture of the magnetic behaviour of both complexes through a combined usage of the susceptibility, magnetization and X-band EPR data as well as broken-symmetry DFT calculations. Several acetyl derivatives of linearol, atractyligenin and atractylitriol were obtained through enzyme-catalysed acetylation and deacetylation reactions. DNA Oxidation Photoinduced by Norharmane Rhenium(I) Polypyridyl Complexes: Effect of the Bidentate N,N′-Ligands on the Damage Profile

Re(I)--polypyridyl complexes have interesting and distinctive photochemical and photosensitizing properties. This work describes the capability to induce (or photoinduce) DNA damage of three Re(I)-complexes with a naturally occurring alkaloid called norharmane (nHo) as ligand: [Re(CO)₃ (nHo)(L)]CF₃ SO₃ where L=2,2'-bipyridine (ReBpy), phenanthroline (RePhen) or dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (ReDppz). The interaction of the complexes with DNA was investigated by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. 5,5′-Bis-vanillin derivatives as discriminating sensors for trivalent cations

[EN] Several bis-vanillin derivatives containing semicarbazone moieties have been prepared and used in discriminating trivalent cations. The prepared probes are readily obtained and they are usually highly crystalline. Depending on the ligand and the studied cations, quenching, enhancement or no changes in the fluorescence spectrum were observed. Using a series of the prepared ligands allows distinguishing between Fe3+, Cr3+ and Al3+. Detection limits and selectivity in front of divalent cations have been evaluated. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Ag2 and Ag3 clusters: synthesis, characterization, and interaction with DNA.

Subnanometric samples, containing exclusively Ag2 and Ag3 clusters, were synthesized for the first time by kinetic control using an electrochemical technique without the use of surfactants or capping agents. By combination of thermodynamic and kinetic measurements and theoretical calculations, we show herein that Ag3 clusters interact with DNA through intercalation, inducing significant structural distortion to the DNA. The lifetime of Ag3 clusters in the intercalated position is two to three orders of magnitude longer than for classical organic intercalators, such as ethidium bromide or proflavine. A new β-hydroxy-γ-methyl-γ-lactone bistetrahydrofuranic acetogenin, tucumanin, with the infrequent symmetrical threo/trans/threo/trans/ threo relative configuration at the tetrahydrofuran rings was isolated from Annona cherimolia (Annonaceae) seeds. The inhibitory potency on the mitochondrial complex I of acetogenins with this relative configuration (tucumanin and asimicin) was compared with that shown by the corresponding pairs with an asymmetrical threo/trans/threo/trans/erythro relative configuration (laherradurin/rolliniastatin-2, and itrabin/molvizarin). DFT broken-symmetry exchange couplings calculation in a 1D chain of bridged iron basic carboxylates

DFT broken-symmetry calculations at the B3LYP level were carried out to evaluate the exchange coupling constants defined by the Heisenberg-Dirac-van Vleck spin Hamiltonian (HDvV), Ĥ = -2JŜaŜb, in a 1D chain of iron basic carboxylate cores [Fe3O(Piv)6(H2O)] bridged by dicyanamide, and two related trinuclear Fe3O moieties. The chain complex was modeled as two Fe3O units that preserve all features of the repetitive unit in the infinite real system. All geometries were taken from the crystallographic data previously reported. The obtained calculated values for the J constants are in good agreement with experimental results.
