Non-parametric spectrum cartography using adaptive radial basis functions
2017
This paper presents a framework for spectrum cartography based on the use of adaptive Gaussian radial basis functions (RBF) centered around a specific number of centroid locations, which are determined, jointly with the other RBF parameters, by the available measurement values at given sensor locations in a specific geographical area. The spectrum map is constructed non-parametrically as no prior knowledge about the transmitters is assumed. The received signal power at each location (over a given bandwidth and time period) is estimated as a weighted contribution from different RBF, in such a way that the both RBF parameters and the weights are jointly optimized using an alternating minimiza…
Standard and Z2-Regge theory in two dimensions
1998
Abstract We qualitatively compare two versions of quantum Regge calculus by means of Monte Carlo simulations. In Standard Regge Calculus the quadratic link lengths of the triangulation vary continuously, whereas in the Z2-Regge Model they are restricted to two possible values. The goal is to determine whether the computationally more easily accessible Z2 model retains the characteristics of standard Regge theory.
Implementing the three-particle quantization condition including higher partial waves
2019
We present an implementation of the relativistic three-particle quantization condition including both $s$- and $d$-wave two-particle channels. For this, we develop a systematic expansion about threshold of the three-particle divergence-free K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df,3}}$, which is a generalization of the effective range expansion of the two-particle K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_2$. Relativistic invariance plays an important role in this expansion. We find that $d$-wave two-particle channels enter first at quadratic order. We explain how to implement the resulting multichannel quantization condition, and present several examples of its application. We derive the leading dependence of the …
New generation low-energy probes for ultralight axion and scalar dark matter
2017
We present a brief overview of a new generation of high-precision laboratory and astrophysical measurements to search for ultralight (sub-eV) axion, axion-like pseudoscalar and scalar dark matter, which form either a coherent condensate or topological defects (solitons). In these new detection methods, the sought effects are linear in the interaction constant between dark matter and ordinary matter, which is in stark contrast to traditional searches for dark matter, where the sought effects are quadratic or higher order in the underlying interaction constants (which are extremely small).
A Measurement of Sin2-theta-w From the Charge Asymmetry of Hadronic Events At the Z0 Peak
1992
Abstract View references (24)The weak mixing angle has been measured from the charge asymmetry of hadronic events with two different approaches using the DELPHI detector at LEP. Both methods are based on a momentum-weighted charge sum to determine the jet charge in both event hemispheres. In a data sample of 247 300 multihadronic Z0 decays a charge asymmetry of 〈QF〉 - 〈QB〉 = -0.0076±0.0012(stat.)±0.0005(exp. syst.)±0.0014(frag.) and a raw forward-backward asymmetry of Araw FB = -0.0109±0.0020(stat.)±0.0010(exp. syst.)±0.0017(frag.) have been measured. This result corresponds to a value of sinθeff=0.2345±0.0030(exp.)±0.0027(frag.) ,sin2θMS=0.2341±0.0030(exp.)±0. 0027(frag.) and to sin2θW=1-m…
Neutron distributions from pionic atoms
1992
Abstract The radii of neutron distributions in nuclei are extracted from experimental shifts and widths of pionic atoms. A best fit to pionic-atom data is carried out by varying simultaneously the neutron radii and the parameter of a pion-nucleus optical potential. We have used three different potentials: one of them theoretical plus a small phenomenological part, another one semiphenomenological, with the linear terms in the density obtained from experimental πN amplitudes and the quadratic terms fitted to the pionic-atom data, and a third one purely phenomenological, obtained from a direct fit to pionic-atom data. The radii obtained with all of them are remarkably close and also close to …
Time-harmonic elasticity with controllability and higher-order discretization methods
2008
The time-harmonic solution of the linear elastic wave equation is needed for a variety of applications. The typical procedure for solving the time-harmonic elastic wave equation leads to difficulties solving large-scale indefinite linear systems. To avoid these difficulties, we consider the original time dependent equation with a method based on an exact controllability formulation. The main idea of this approach is to find initial conditions such that after one time-period, the solution and its time derivative coincide with the initial conditions. The wave equation is discretized in the space domain with spectral elements. The degrees of freedom associated with the basis functions are situa…
MUSIC-LS Modal Channel Estimation for an OFDM-OQAM System
2008
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) signaling over frequency selective multipath channels shows inter-symbol interference (ISI) and Inter-Channel Interference (ICI) that degrade its performance. Channel equalization and channel estimation are needed to combat these intrinsic interferences. In this paper a novel modal channel estimator based on the MUltiple signal classification (MUSIC) and least squares (LS) algorithms for a wideband passband OFDM-OQAM signaling over static multipath channels is presented. The effects of the frequency selective channel on the received signal are described considering a wideband OFDM-OQAM sys…
MUSIC-based modal channel estimation for wideband OFDM-OQAM
2008
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) over wideband frequency selective multipath channels suffers from inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) that degrade its performance. Channel estimation and equalization are needed to combat these interferences. In this paper a novel channel estimator for passband OFDM-OQAM signaling over wideband multipath channels, which is based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) with the Spatial Smoothing technique is presented. Numerical simulation results are presented in the low number of subcarriers, i.e. wideband, scenario.
Shakedown optimum design of reinforced concrete framed structures
1994
Structures subjected to variable repeated loads can undergo the shakedown or adaptation phenomenon,-which prevents them from collapse but may cause lack of serviceability, for the plastic deformations developed, although finite, as shakedown occurrence postulates, may exceed some maximum values imposed by external ductility criteria. This paper is devoted to the optimal design of reinforced concrete structures, subjected to variable and repeated loads. For such structures the knowledge of the actual values taken by the plastic deformations, at shakedown occurrence, is a crucial issue. An approximate assessment of such plastic deformations is needed, which is herein provided in the shape of …
