Understanding the Participation of Quadricyclane as Nucleophile in Polar [2σ + 2σ + 2π] Cycloadditions toward Electrophilic π Molecules

2008

The formal [2sigma + 2sigma + 2pi] cycloaddition of quadricyclane, 1, with dimethyl azodicarboxylate, 2, in water has been studied using DFT methods at the B3LYP/6-31G** and MPWB1K/6-31G** levels. In the gas phase, the reaction of 1 with 2 has a two-stage mechanism with a large polar character and an activation barrier of 23.2 kcal/mol. Inclusion of water through a combined discrete-continuum model changes the mechanism to a two-step model where the first nucleophilic attack of 1 to 2 is the rate-limiting step with an activation barrier of 14.7 kcal/mol. Analysis of the electronic structure of the transition state structures points out the large zwitterionic character of these species. A DF…

Rational supershapes for surface reconstruction

2007

Simple representation of complex 3D data sets is a fundamental problem in computer vision. From a quality control perspective, it is crucial to use efficient and simple techniques do define a reference model for further recognition or comparison tasks. In this paper, we focus on reverse engineering 3D data sets by recovering rational supershapes to build an implicit function to represent mechanical parts. We derive existing techniques for superquadrics recovery to the supershapes and we adapt the concepts introduced for the ratioquadrics to introduce the rational supershapes. The main advantage of rational supershapes over standard supershapes is that the radius is now expressed as a ration…

A Neural Architecture for Segmentation and Modelling of Range Data

2003

A novel, two stage, neural architecture for the segmentation of range data and their modeling with undeformed superquadrics is presented. The system is composed by two distinct neural stages: a SOM is used to perform data segmentation, and, for each segment, a multi-layer feed-forward network performs model estimation. The topology preserving nature of the SOM algorithm makes this architecture suited to cluster data with respect to sudden curvature variations. The second stage is designed to model and compute the inside-outside function of an undeformed superquadric in whatever attitude, starting form the (x, y, z) data triples. The network has been trained using backpropagation, and the we…

Fast Volumetric Reconstruction of Human Body through Superquadrics

2013

This paper describes a technique to reconstruct the volumes of the human body. For this purpose, are introduced mathematical objects able to represent 3d shapes, called super quadrics. These objects are positioned in the space according the captures made by a Microsoft Kinect device and are composed to represent the volumes of the human body. The employment of quaternions provides a relevant speedup for the rotation of the volumes and allows to follow the human movements in real time and reduced computational cost.

Boolean operations with implicit and parametric representation of primitives using R-functions

2005

We present a new and efficient algorithm to accurately polygonize an implicit surface generated by multiple Boolean operations with globally deformed primitives. Our algorithm is special in the sense that it can be applied to objects with both an implicit and a parametric representation, such as superquadrics, supershapes, and Dupin cyclides. The input is a constructive solid geometry tree (CSG tree) that contains the Boolean operations, the parameters of the primitives, and the global deformations. At each node of the CSG tree, the implicit formulations of the subtrees are used to quickly determine the parts to be transmitted to the parent node, while the primitives' parametric definition …

Biomechanics of human ascending aorta and aneurysm rupture risk assessment

2021

Ascending aortic aneurysms (AsAA) and aortic dissections are life-threatening cardiovascular diseases. The main criteria for determining surgical intervention of AsAA are the maximum diameter or the increasing annual rate of the aneurysm. The mortality of the untreated aortic dissection can be 21% to 74%, depending on the delay of hospital admission. Our study aims to characterize the biomechanical properties of the ascending aorta and propose a patient-specific approach to assess the risks of rupture. The purpose of this PhD work is multifold. On the one hand, biaxial tensile tests were performed on AsAA samples obtained from one hundred patients with surgery of AsAA. The impact on the diffe…

Geometric and conceptual knowledge representation within a generative model of visual perception

1989

A representation scheme of knowledge at both the geometric and conceptual levels is offered which extends a generative theory of visual perception. According to this theory, the perception process proceeds through different scene representations at various levels of abstraction. The geometric domain is modeled following the CSG (constructive solid geometry) approach, taking advantage of the geometric modelling scheme proposed by A. Pentland, based on superquadrics as representation primitives. Recursive Boolean combinations and deformations are considered in order to enlarge the scope of the representation scheme and to allow for the construction of real-world scenes. In the conceptual doma…

The Patellofemoral Arthroplasty: The Great Solution, the Great Problem

2012

Unfortunately, many orthopedic surgeons believe that the definite solution for eliminating anterior knee pain in a young patient with multiple operations is the patellofemoral prosthesis (“The Great Solution”). But, they fail to ask themselves the most important question; what is causing the pain? When a patellofemoral prosthesis is implanted in these young patients without finding out the cause of the pain, a more serious problem could be created with a worse solution (“The Great Problem”). The cases we present spotlight this abuse.

Effect of exercises with weight vests and a patient education programme for women with osteopenia and a healed wrist fracture: a randomized, controll…

2015

Background Exercise programmes have shown to be important for the prevention of fractures in patients with established osteoporosis. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of such programmes for women with low bone mineral density (BMD) (osteoporosis or osteopenia) who have already suffered a fracture. Studies have indicated that exercise programmes concentrating on muscular strength and dynamic balance have a positive effect on significant risk factors for falls such as quadriceps strength and balance. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of a 6-month exercise programme and a patient education component (OsteoACTIVE) on quadriceps strength, BMD, dynamic balance, wa…

Foliations of $\mathbb{S}^3$ by Cyclides

2018

Throughout the last 2–3 decades, there has been great interest in the extrinsic geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds (see [2], [4] and [22]). ¶One approach is to build examples of foliations with reasonably simple singularities with leaves admitting some very restrictive geometric condition. For example (see [22], [23] and [17]), consider in particular foliations of $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ by totally geodesic or totally umbilical leaves with isolated singularities. ¶The article [14] provides families of foliations of $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ by Dupin cyclides with only one smooth curve of singularities. Quadrics and other families of cyclides like Darboux cyclides provide other examples. These foliat…
