Deformation of rotational structures inKr73andRb74: Probing the additivity principle at triaxial shapes

2008

Lifetimes have been deduced in the intermediate/high-spin range for the three known rotational bands in $^{73}\mathrm{Kr}$ and the $T=0$ band in $^{74}\mathrm{Rb}$ using the residual Doppler shift method. This has enabled relative transition quadrupole moments to be studied for the first time in triaxial nuclei as a function of spin. The data suggest that the additivity principle for transition quadrupole moments is violated, a result that is in disagreement with predictions from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked relativistic mean-field theory calculations. The reasons for the discrepancy are not understood but may indicate that important correlations are missing from the models.

Double polarization experiments at intermediate energy

1999

At modern electron accelerators with highly polarized, intense, high duty factor beams double polarization coincidence experiments became feasible with good statistical accuracy. The strong potential towards the precise determination of small nucleon structure quantities is illustrated by two recent examples from MAMI. The measurement of $G_E^n$ in the quasifree reaction $D(\vec e, e'\vec n)p$ lead to a new parametrization of $G_E^n$ which is significantly above the previously preferred one from elastic $e-D$ scattering. A $p(\vec e, e'\vec p)\pi^0$ experiment at the energy of the $\Delta$ resonance yields preliminary results for the longitudinal quadrupole mixing. Both experimental errors …

A Møller polarimeter for CW and pulsed intermediate energy electron beams

1990

The Moller polarimeter was mainly designed for the cw electron beam of the Mainz microtron (MAMI). The described polarimeter covers an energy range between 25 and 185 MeV and can relatively simply be upgraded to the maximum MAMI energy of 840 MeV. The Moller-scattered electrons are momentum-analyzed in the defocusing plane of a quadrupole magnet and both Moller electrons can be detected in coincidence for symmetrical scattering with ⊖cm=90°. All polarization components of the electron beam can be measured by suitable choices of the orientation of the target polarization. For pulsed electron beams with a small duty factor and a high peak current the polarimeter can also be operated with sing…

Pronounced shape change induced by quasiparticle alignment

2000

Mean lifetimes of high-spin states of Kr-74 have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The high-spin states were studied using the Ca-40(Ca-40, alpha 2p) reaction at a beam energy of 160 MeV with the GASP gamma-ray spectrometer. The ground-state band and negative parity side band show the presence of three different configurations in terms of transitional quadrupole deformations. A dramatic shape change was found along the ground-state band after the S-band crossing. The deduced quadrupole deformation changes are well reproduced by cranked Woods-Saxon Strutinsky calculations.

Cooling of radioactive ions with the Penning trap REXTRAP

2005

Abstract Cooling of radioactive ion beams in a Penning trap is an essential component of the post-accelerator REX-ISOLDE at CERN. Prior to their charge-breeding and acceleration, ions from the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are accumulated, cooled and bunched with REXTRAP. This beam preparation provides short ion pulses with low emittance, key ingredient for a high efficiency of REX-ISOLDE. Two different cooling techniques have been investigated with REXTRAP. Both rely on the use of a buffer gas as the coolant but differ in the way the transversal compression of the stored ion cloud is achieved. Sideband cooling with a light buffer gas as coolant is the standard technique used at REXTRAP so …

The three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI

1998

Abstract A set-up of three high-resolution magnetic spectrometers, for simplicity named A, B and C, has been built as the central facility for the precise determination of double and triple coincidence cross sections of hadron knock-out and meson production through the scattering of electrons at the Mainz microtron MAMI. The spectrometers A and C with point-to-point optics in the dispersive plane and parallel-to-point optics in the non-dispersive plane have a solid angle of 28 msr and a momentum acceptance of 20 and 25%, respectively. They each consist of a quadrupole, a sextupole and two dipole magnets, reaching maximum momenta of 735 and 550 MeV/c, respectively. The spectrometer B has a s…

Direct mass measurements of neutron-deficient xenon isotopes with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer

2000

Abstract The masses of Xe isotopes with 124⩾ A ⩾114 have been measured using the ISOLTRAP spectrometer at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE/CERN. A mass resolving power of 500 000 was chosen resulting in an accuracy of δm ≈12 keV for all isotopes investigated. Conflicts with existing mass data of several standard deviations were found.

Low- and medium-spin states in theN=124 isotones208Po and209At

1985

Excited levels in208Po and209At were populated in the reactions (p, 2n) and (3He, 3n), and208Po also in the EC-decay of the208At ground state, which was produced in the209Bi(3He, 4n) reaction. The experimental procedures comprised gamma-ray excitation functions,γ- γ coincidences, as well as gamma-ray angular distribution and conversionelectron measurements, both on- and off-line. The properties of about twenty-five levels in each nuclide were studied. In208Po the energy of the 8+→6+ transition could be determined to be 4.0±0.2keV and the 8+ state thus has an excitation energy of 1,528 keV. The effective quadrupole charge of theh 9/2 proton can be derived ase eff(τ h 9/2)=1.69(15)e. For the …

Nuclear spins, moments and charge radii of108?111Sn

1987

The hyperfine structure splittings (hfs) and isotope shifts (IS) in the atomic transitions 5s2 5p21S0 → 5s2 5p6s1,3P1 have been measured for the radioactive isotopes108−111Sn and all stable ones. The tin isotopes were prepared as fast atomic beams for collinear laser spectroscopy at the GSI online mass separator following a fusion reaction. Nuclear spins, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole moments and changes in mean square charge radii have been determined. In109Sn the spinI=5/2 was measured for the nuclear ground state (T1/2=18 min) in contradiction to the literature value. The mean square charge radii show a parabolic behaviour with a maximum at N=66. This is interpreted by collective …

Nuclear spins, magnetic moments, and quadrupole moments of Cu isotopes fromN=28toN=46: Probes for core polarization effects

2010

Measurements of the ground-state nuclear spins and magnetic and quadrupole moments of the copper isotopes from $^{61}\mathrm{Cu}$ up to $^{75}\mathrm{Cu}$ are reported. The experiments were performed at the CERN online isotope mass separator (ISOLDE) facility, using the technique of collinear laser spectroscopy. The trend in the magnetic moments between the $N=28$ and $N=50$ shell closures is reasonably reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations starting from a $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ core. The quadrupole moments reveal a strong polarization of the underlying Ni core when the neutron shell is opened, which is, however, strongly reduced at $N=40$ due to the parity change between the $\mat…
