Positive Psychology Perspectives on Foreign Language Learning and Teaching
2016
The process of internationalisation of education in Australia and globally is frequently viewed from the deficit perspective of difficulties and challenges international students face while studying in another country. This paper examines a different perspective of the international educational experience. It explores the positive aspects of the international students’ view on their life in Australia and studying at an Australian university. The paper examines possible interpretations of data from student surveys using dimensions from educational positive psychology for the analysis. First, it outlines the concepts of negative and positive emotions and their role in learning. Then, it intro…
Zaangażowane badania jakościowe – perspektywa autobiograficzna
2018
The presented article is an attempt to reconstruct/retrospect my professional biography in its methodological section. It is a description of the way I went to become a biographic, narrative scholar. It is also a description of the reasons – theories, concepts, discussions and disputes that accompanied me on the way. I present my critical attitude towards Polish school and Polish education, posing questions about education, school and teacher. The second matter that organizes my research is the question about interpersonal relationships, intimacy, marriage, family and what is happening between: spouses, partners, parents and children. I ask what in our relationships with others favours a ha…
Surveying and Observing Political Elites
2017
Surveys and observation are two strategies of inquiry that gather rich amounts of data about political elites’ opinions, attitudes, and behavior. These research techniques have experienced advances benefitting from the development of the Internet and new technological tools. Survey research has evolved from country studies to comparative research with greater amounts of units and cases. However, such studies face important challenges regarding questionnaire design, sampling, interviewing, and data analysis. In particular, problems of representativity and lack of control may threaten comparative analysis. On their side, observation techniques raise the question of accessibility, of potential…
Students' perceptions on intrapreneurship education – prerequisites for learning organisations
2010
The aim of this qualitative study is to understand the prerequisites for learning organisations (LO) as perceived by university students. Intrapreneurship education offers possibilities to increase student's adaptation of learning organisation's climate and behaviour. By analysing students' perceptions, more information about learning organisation creation was achieved. Content analysis was used to interpret the results. In total, 310 first year university master's degree students in Finland answered a series open-ended questions. The results show that for intrapreneurship education to result in an increase in learning organisations it should be based on individual motivation and the self-m…
A VR/AR Environment for Multi-User Liver Anatomy Education
2021
We present a Virtual and Augmented Reality multi-user prototype of a learning environment for liver anatomy education. Our system supports various training scenarios ranging from small learning groups to classroom-size education, where students and teachers can participate in virtual reality, augmented reality, or via desktop PCs. In an iterative development process with surgeons and teachers, a virtual organ library was created. Nineteen liver data sets were used comprising 3D surface models, 2D image data, pathology information, diagnosis and treatment decisions. These data sets can interactively be sorted and investigated individually regarding their volumetric and meta information. The …
A Note on Qualitative Input-Output Analysis
1995
International audience; The paper discusses qualitative input—output methods. It is shown that information is lost. Because the binaiy relationship constructed by qualitative methods is not transitive, the model lacks economic consistency. Qualitative methods are tending to become more sophisticated, but some problems of economic interpretation are raised.
The newly qualified teacher in the working community
2014
Focusing on the working community, this article concentrates on the newly qualified foreign language teachers’ (NQT) experiences and on factors that promoted or prevented the development of professional expertise at the outset of their working life. It draws on a qualitative longitudinal study conducted at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, between 2003 and 2008. All the study participants were female and they were about 24 years old at the time. The data consisted of the NQTs’ essays and journal entries which they wrote on events that had a significant impact on their teaching during their first three to four years of work. The study suggests that by listening to the NQTs’ voices in the…
Do organizational variables influence satisfaction with nursing student practices?
2021
Abstract Clinical practices are a vital component in the education of registered nursing students. This study analyzed the influence of organizational variables on satisfaction with clinical practices. A cross-sectional study design involved 572 registered nursing students. Two statistical methodologies, hierarchical regression models and qualitative comparative analysis of diffuse sets, were used for data analysis. In the hierarchical regression models the number of students supervised predicted satisfaction with clinical educator (β = -.22; p ≤ .001), environment (β = -.13; p ≤ .05) and overall satisfaction (β = -.15; p ≤ .05). However, in the qualitative comparative analysis, the type of…
The compendium of self-enactable techniques to change and self-manage motivation and behaviour v.1.0.
2019
Behaviour change techniques describe the content of behaviour change interventions, but do not adequately account for the actions that people must themselves undertake to successfully change or self-manage motivation or behaviour. This paper describes the development of a compendium of self-enactable techniques, combining behaviour- and motivation-regulation techniques across six existing classifications of behaviour change techniques and three scoping reviews. The compendium includes 123 techniques, each of which is labelled, defined and presented with instructive examples to facilitate self-enactment. Qualitative feedback was gathered from intervention developers and the general public to…
