Acute toxicity tests using earthworms to estimate ecological quality of compost and digestate

2017

Ecological quality of compost and digestate, used as fertilizers for agricultural use, was assessed through an acute ecotoxicological bioassay testing the earthworm Eisenia fetida (Annelida). The test evaluates the earthworm’s attitude to dig within 15 min into a soil medium constituted by a mixture of a standardized soil and different concentrations of compost/digestate. According to different classes of behavior responses, the sample is classified as good or bad quality (ON/OFF). The validity of this test was confirmed comparing the observations with the results from a standard chronic test developed by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Considering samples fro…

Quality control for exposure assessment in epidemiological studies

2010

In the framework of an epidemiological study, dosemeters were used for the assessment of radio frequency electromagnetic field exposure. To check the correct dosemeter's performance in terms of consistency of recorded field values over the entire study period, a quality control strategy was developed. In this paper, the concept of quality control and its results is described. From the 20 dosemeters used, 19 were very stable and reproducible, with deviations of a maximum of +/- 1 dB compared with their initial state. One device was found to be faulty and its measurement data had to be excluded from the analysis. As a result of continuous quality control procedures, the confidence in the meas…

Quality Assurance and Support Measures for Solar Cooling on System Level

2016

Abstract Within the IEA SHC Task 48 “Quality assurance and support measures for Solar Cooling” the analysis and evaluation of the systems has been one of the four main focuses. Here the activities are including the lab- and field-based characterization of the systems, the definition and application of performance figures, a guideline for a reliable monitoring procedure including methods for automated error detection and an updated overview on worldwide installed DEC systems including hints and good practice examples. They are furthermore leading to three different easy-to-use tools for solar cooling systems: The LCA tool considers environmental and energetic values for the evaluation, the P…

Low-Intensity Ultrasounds

2012

Ultrasonics, showing increasing use in the food industry for both the analysis and modification of food products, is a rapidly growing field of research. The sound ranges employed can be divided into high-frequency, low-energy diagnostic ultrasounds and low-frequency, high-energy power ultrasounds. The former is usually used as a nondestructive, rapid, easy-to-automate, and relatively inexpensive analytical technique for quality assurance and process control with particular reference to physicochemical properties, such as composition, structure, and physical state of foods. Nowadays, power ultrasound is considered to be an emerging and promising technology for industrial food processing. Th…

Internal Quality Assurance for Higher Education Study Programme

2015

<p>Quality assurance for study programme is necessary precondition to realize qualitative higher education. Quality assessment is important part of quality assurance cycle. There are used different methodologies, assessment criteria and indicators to assess the higher education quality. It is clear that the assessment results which study programme will be better or worse are detected by the choice of criteria. It is difficult to find objective criteria which could be used universally for all study programme types. The aim of the research is to investigate quality assurance cycle for study programme quality and pay main attention to assessment part. The aim of assessment part is to sel…

ISO 9000‐based quality assurance approaches and their relationship with strategic analysis

2003

Many organisations use the ISO 9000 series as a reference framework to establish their quality assurance system. In doing so, most of them overlook the process of interpreting and adapting these standards to their own characteristics and capabilities. As a result, there is a misunderstanding with respect to the objectives of the standards. The correct implementation of the ISO 9000 series requires a preliminary analysis that facilitates the adaptation of them to the particular circumstances of a company. Therefore, this paper pays attention to the relationship existing between ISO 9000 implementation and the use of strategic diagnosis tools. The employment of such tools could be studied as …

Quality and Transparency in VET: New Challenges for Public Administrations in Latvia

2014

Abstract The main problem discussed in the paper is the new challenges for public administration of vocational education and training (VET) due to innovations and globalization. Most of the attention in the paper is paid to the readiness of entrepreneurs jointly with municipalities to participate in the preparation of future qualified specialists. Co-operation among various educational establishments, the local government and the employers is crucial. A much neglected aspect still is the co-operation between VET and higher education (HE) institutions – which the authors see as a real driving force for the success of local partnerships to promote regional economic development with respective…

Building European‐level Quality Assurance Structures: Views from Within ENQA

2009

Abstract The current article discusses the changes in the role of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) in the Bologna Process, mainly from the ENQA point of view. This paper argues that ENQA’s development to its current status as a European‐level policy maker is to a great extent a result of the European Union’s policy of supporting European‐level cooperation and transparency in the field of quality assurance. ENQA was not the only contestant for the role it now has in European quality assurance. The European University Association (EUA) had long‐term experience in quality assurance and also had its own interests in the field of quality assurance. The te…

Why (not) assess? Views from the academic departments of Finnish universities

2010

In Europe, national quality assurance systems of higher education have begun to be established. In Finland, this development has had the consequence of forcing universities to take notice of assessment procedures. However, little is known about the procedures taking place in individual academic departments as a result of this pan‐European trend. This article describes how academics currently comprehend quality assessment, paying particular attention to self‐evaluations and quality assurance systems. Altogether, the paper casts light on how academics are responding to the increasing university assessment activities.
