Cognitive radio networks (CRNs), which allow secondary users (SUs) to dynamically access a network without affecting the primary users (PUs), have been widely regarded as an effective approach to mitigate the shortage of spectrum resources and the inefficiency of spectrum utilization. Endpoint Admission Control over Assured Forwarding PHBs and Its Performance over RED Implementations

The Assured Forwarding Per Hop Behavior (AF PHB) has been devised by the IETF Differentiated Services (DiffServ) working group to provide drop level differentiation. The intent of AF is to support services with different loss requirements, but with no strict delay and jitter guarantees. Another suggested use of AF is to provide differentiated support for traffic conforming to an edge conditioning/policing scheme with respect to nonconforming traffic. Scope of this paper is twofold. Mobile Encounter Network - the missing data link

In this paper, we discuss about the applicability of a short-range wireless communication scheme called Mobile Encounter Network (MEN). Encounters between devices communicating while moving allows ad-hoc -type data transfer to be performed. A background for the emerging of such networks is given. The essential properties of the MEN data transfer are specified. Based on this, the role of MEN as a data transfer medium is discussed. The conclusion is that such networking technique may provide additional value compared to the traditional wireless communication.

Per-flow signalling extension across DiffServ domains

This paper describes a framework devised to extend per-flow admission control operation across Differentiated Services domains. Although the specific case of interoperability with RSVP is under discussion, our proposal can be easily adapted to other hop-by-hop signalling protocols. In our framework, DiffSery border routers accomplish three tasks. First, during the set-up phase, flows are mapped onto PHB groups on the basis of their QoS and traffic specifications. Deadline-based QoS Algorithms for High-performance Networks

Quality of service (QoS) is becoming an attractive feature for high-performance networks and parallel machines because it could allow a more efficient use of resources. Deadline-based algorithms can provide powerful QoS provision. However, the cost associated with keeping ordered lists of packets makes them impractical for high-performance networks. In this paper, we explore how to adapt efficiently the earliest deadline first family of algorithms to the high-speed networks environments. The results show excellent performance using just two virtual channels, FIFO queues, and a cost feasible with today's technology.

Evaluating the Performance of Real Time Videoconferencing in Ad Hoc Networks Through Emulation

The validation of new video protocols and applications for mobile ad hoc networks in a real environment is an important task. In this work we present Castadiva, a test-bed architecture that allows validating software solutions for ad hoc networks using low-cost, off-the-shelf devices and open source software. We use this tool to test a videocall using the OLSR protocol in different scenarios, varying the number of hops between the caller and the receiver. The results obtained in this paper show that, for an ad hoc network with a large number of hops, the quality of videocalls suffers a significant degradation even in the absence of mobility.

Extended HSUPA coverage and enhanced battery saving opportunities with multiple TTI lengths

3GPP has specified that terminals can be configured to use either 2 or 10 ms transmission time interval in high speed uplink packet access systems. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the benefit of exploiting a mixture of both of the transmissions time intervals within a cell instead of only one. The study is quantified by means of studying the achievable coverage of voice over IP and possible battery saving benefits. The analysis is conducted with a system level simulator modeling network and terminal behavior in detail. The paper indicates that utilizing a mixture of both transmission time intervals can extend coverage whilst providing enhanced battery saving opportunities.
