Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosol: synthesis and quantitative analysis of pm2.5 from xi'an, northwestern c…

2018

Abstract. The sources, formation mechanism and amount of organosulfates (OS) in atmospheric aerosol are not yet well understood, partly due to the lack of authentic standards for quantification. In this study, we report an improved robust procedure for the synthesis of organosulfates with different functional groups. Nine authentic organosulfate standards were synthesized and four standards (benzyl sulfate, phenyl sulfate, glycolic acid sulfate, and hydroxyacetone sulfate) were used to quantify their ambient concentrations. The authentic standards and ambient aerosol samples were analyzed using an optimized ultra performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrom…

Quantitative Multispectral Imaging Differentiates Melanoma from Seborrheic Keratosis.

2021

Melanoma is a melanocytic tumor that is responsible for the most skin cancer-related deaths. By contrast, seborrheic keratosis (SK) is a very common benign lesion with a clinical picture that may resemble melanoma. We used a multispectral imaging device to distinguish these two entities, with the use of autofluorescence imaging with 405 nm and diffuse reflectance imaging with 525 and 660 narrow-band LED illumination. We analyzed intensity descriptors of the acquired images. These included ratios of intensity values of different channels, standard deviation and minimum/maximum values of intensity of the lesions. The pattern of the lesions was also assessed with the use of particle analysis. …

A quantitative analysis of wild herbaceous plant species for medicinal uses in four Regional Parks in Sicily (Italy)

2019

This paper illustrates the results of a study carried out in 4 regional Parks in Sicily (Italy) from 2009 to 2010. The study area covers a surface of 2076 km2, the 8% of the territory of Sicily, includes 90 towns and it is characterized by a high degree of plant biodiversity. The main aim of the study was to analyse the extent of the current knowledge on medicinal uses of wild shrub and herbaceous plants in the area, using quantitative indices. The information was obtained using semi-structured interview format performed on a sample of 802 people over the age of 60 who were considered experts in rural traditions. The results highlight that most of the species are used against general health…

Ethics in Emergency Medical Services – Who Cares? An exploratory analysis from Australia

2008

Due to the complexity, stressfulness and often the life threatening nature of tasks that ambulance professionals have to deal with every day, ethical decision making in Emergency Services is a daily challenge. An Australian Association of Ambulance Professionals undertook a project of research to identify the individual ethics profile of members and their perspective on organization ethics and ethical conflict to better understand apparent conflict in ethical values between members and their employer organization. Due to the exploratory nature of this study two types of data (quantitative and qualitative) were gathered through a self-administrated questionnaire of members and semi-structure…
