Model calculations of the steady-state ion transport against its external concentration gradient when the driving force of this transport is a pH difference across a charged membrane are presented. We have solved numerically the exact Nernst-Planck equations without any additional simplifying approximation, such as the Goldman constant field assumption within the membrane. The validity of this assumption for a broad range of pH values, and salt and membrane fixed charge concentrations was analyzed critically. FLUCTUATIONS IN LIPID BILAYERS: ARE THEY UNDERSTOOD?

We review recent computer simulation studies of undulating lipid bilayers. Theoretical interpretations of such fluctuating membranes are most commonly based on generalized Helfrich-type elastic models, with additional contributions of local "protrusions" and/or density fluctuations. Such models provide an excellent basis for describing the fluctuations of tensionless bilayers in the fluid phase at a quantitative level. However, this description is found to fail for membranes in the gel phase and for membranes subject to high tensions. Very High Fascioliasis Intensities in Schoolchildren from Nile Delta Governorates, Egypt: The Old World Highest Burdens Found in Lowlands

Quantitative coprological analyses of children were performed in Alexandria and Behera governorates, Egypt, to ascertain whether individual intensities in the Nile Delta lowlands reach high levels as those known in hyperendemic highland areas of Latin America. Analyses focused on subjects presenting intensities higher than 400 eggs per gram of faeces (epg), the high burden cut-off according to WHO classification. A total of 96 children were found to shed between 408 and 2304 epg, with arithmetic and geometric means of 699.5 and 629.07 epg, respectively. This paper studies long term investing by an investor that maximizes either expected utility from terminal wealth or from consumption. We introduce the concepts of a generalized stochastic discount factor (SDF) and of the minimum price to attain target payouts. The paper finds that the dynamics of the SDF needs to be captured and not the entire market dynamics, which simplifies significantly practical implementations of optimal portfolio strategies. We pay particular attention to the case where the SDF is equal to the inverse of the growth-optimal portfolio in the given market. Effects of various hygiene procedures on the surface characteristics of titanium abutments.

The use of cleaning instruments on titanium implants may cause undesired surface alterations. In a qualitative and quantitative assessment of these alterations, 5 titanium implant abutments were treated with a steel curet, a prototype pure titanium curet, an air abrasive polishing system, and an ultrasonic system. Custom-made polymer templates, used to secure the curet to a vertical guide bar and a spring scale to maintain a constant instrument pressure, guaranteed a standardized procedure and reproducible results. Mitochondrial DNA restriction site analyses on natural populations of Drosophila subobscura have proved the existence of two common, coexisting haplotypes (I and II), as well as a set of less frequent ones derived from them. In questo contributo vengono presentate le caratteristiche principali della ricerca quantitativa con una speciale attenzione al settore turistico. La distinzione tradizionale tra studi quantitativi e qualitativi viene discussa anche alla luce del crescente impiego dei mixed models, che rappresentano una risposta ai limiti dei due approcci più tradizionali. This contribution presents the main features of quantitative research with a special focus on tourism studies. The traditional difference between quantitative and qualitative studies is discussed and mixed models are presented as a new perspective able to overcome the shortcomings of both approaches.

Its treatment of quantities and prices is scrutinized by examining the variant with data in quantities and prices, and the variant with data in value and price indexes. Gyrification from constrained cortical expansion

The exterior of the mammalian brain - the cerebral cortex - has a conserved layered structure whose thickness varies little across species. However, selection pressures over evolutionary time scales have led to cortices that have a large surface area to volume ratio in some organisms, with the result that the brain is strongly convoluted into sulci and gyri. Here we show that the gyrification can arise as a nonlinear consequence of a simple mechanical instability driven by tangential expansion of the gray matter constrained by the white matter.
