FluorMODleaf: A new leaf fluorescence emission model based on the PROSPECT model

2010

International audience; A new model of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission by plant leaves, FluorMODleaf, is presented. It is an extension of PROSPECT, a widely used leaf optical properties model that regards the leaf as a pile of N absorbing and diffusing elementary plates. In FluorMODleaf, fluorescence emission of an infinitesimal layer of thickness dx is integrated over the entire elementary plate. The fluorescence source function is based on the excitation spectrum of diluted isolated thylakoids and on the emission spectra of isolated photosystems, PSI and PSII, which are the main pigment–protein complexes involved in the initial stages of photosynthesis. Scattering within the leaf is p…

Chlorophyll A Fluorescence and Chlorophyll Content in Parmelia Quercina Thalli from a Polluted Region of Northern Castellon (Spain)

1996

AbstractMeasurements of modulated chlorophyll a fluorescence emission and chlorophyll content were made in thalli of Parmelia quercina collected from northern Castellon(Spain). Althoug high air pollution concentrations have been measured in this area, the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence is unaffected. Following dark-adaptation, the response to irradiance of chlorophyll fluorescence was examined. With respect to control samples, thalli collected in northern Castellon consistently showed differences in fluorescence quenching, the efficiency of excitation energy capture and quenching of basal fluorescence. However, the quantum ield of photochemistry and non-cyclic electron flow were …

Towards the quantitative and physically-based interpretation of solar-induced vegetation fluorescence retrieved from global imaging

2021

Due to emerging high spectral resolution, remote sensing techniques and ongoing developments to retrieve the spectrally resolved vegetation fluorescence spectrum from several scales, the light reactions of photosynthesis are receiving a boost of attention for the monitoring of the Earth's carbon balance. Sensor-retrieved vegetation fluorescence (from leaf, tower, airborne or satellite scale) originating from the excited antenna chlorophyll a molecule has become a new quantitative biophysical vegetation parameter retrievable from space using global imaging techniques. However, to retrieve the actual quantum efficiencies, and hence a true photosynthetic status of the observed vegetation, all …

Quantum chemical simulation of excited states of chlorophylls, bacteriochlorophylls and their complexes

2006

The present review describes the use of quantum chemical methods in estimation of structures and electronic transition energies of photosynthetic pigments in vacuum, in solution and imbedded in proteins. Monomeric Mg-porphyrins, chlorophylls and bacteriochlorophylls and their solvent 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were studied. Calculations were performed for Mg-porphyrin, Mg-chlorin, Mg-bacteriochlorin, mesochlorophyll a, chlorophylls a, b, c(1), c(2), c(3), d and bacteriochlorophylls a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, plus several homologues. Geometries were optimised with PM3, PM3/CISD, PM5, ab initio HF (6-31G*/6-311G**) and density functional B3LYP (6-31G*/6-311G**) methods. Spectroscopic transition energ…

Light-harvesting chlorophyll protein (LHCII) drives electron transfer in semiconductor nanocrystals

2017

Type-II quantum dots (QDs) are capable of light-driven charge separation between their core and the shell structures; however, their light absorption is limited in the longer-wavelength range. Biological light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) efficiently absorbs in the blue and red spectral domains. Therefore, hybrid complexes of these two structures may be promising candidates for photovoltaic applications. Previous measurements had shown that LHCII bound to QD can transfer its excitation energy to the latter, as indicated by the fluorescence emissions of LHCII and QD being quenched and sensitized, respectively. In the presence of methyl viologen (MV), both fluorescence emissions are quenched…

Struktūra un fotofizikālie procesi 0D un 1D InGaN kompozītu materiālos

2014

Musical pitch quantization as an eigenvalue problem

2020

How can discrete pitches and chords emerge from the continuum of sound? Using a quantum cognition model of tonal music, we prove that the associated Schrödinger equation in Fourier space is invariant under continuous pitch transpositions. However, this symmetry is broken in the case of transpositions of chords, entailing a discrete cyclic group as transposition symmetry. Our research relates quantum mechanics with music and is consistent with music theory and seminal insights by Hermann von Helmholtz.

Coherence resonance in Bonhoeffer-Van der Pol circuit

2009

International audience; A nonlinear electronic circuit simulating the neuronal activity in a noisy environment is proposed. This electronic circuit is exactly ruled by the set of Bonhoeffer-Van Der Pol equations and is excited with a Gaussian noise. Without external deterministic stimuli, it is shown that the circuit exhibits the so-called 'coherence resonance' phenomenon.

Sensing Chiral Drugs by Using CdSe/ZnS Nanoparticles Capped withN-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Methyl Ester

2013

Chiral quantum dots (QDs), differing in their core or shell size and, consequently, in their optical properties, were synthesized by the treatment of commercially available amine-capped quantum dots with methyl ester N-acetyl-L-cysteine (CysP). Interestingly, their colloidal methanol solutions remain stable for several months. Their NMR and IR spectra were in accordance with CysP binding to the QD surface through two anchoring groups; its thiolate (strongly bound) and the carbonyl group of its ester (weaker bound) group, whereas their circular dichroism (CD) spectra showed a new broad redshifted band, suggesting that the attachment to the QD surface modified the conformational equilibrium t…

Debates with Small Transparent Quantum Verifiers

2014

We study a model where two opposing provers debate over the membership status of a given string in a language, trying to convince a weak verifier whose coins are visible to all. We show that the incorporation of just two qubits to an otherwise classical constant-space verifier raises the class of debatable languages from at most NP to the collection of all Turing-decidable languages (recursive languages). When the verifier is further constrained to make the correct decision with probability 1, the corresponding class goes up from the regular languages up to at least E.
