Gravitational Imprints of Flavor Hierarchies

2020

The mass hierarchy among the three generations of quarks and charged leptons is one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics. In various flavor models, the origin of this phenomenon is attributed to a series of hierarchical spontaneous symmetry breakings, most of which are beyond the reach of particle colliders. We point out that the observation of a multi-peaked stochastic gravitational wave signal from a series of cosmological phase transitions could well be a unique probe of the mechanism behind flavor hierarchies. To illustrate this point, we show how near future ground- and space-based gravitational wave observatories could detect up to three peaks in the recently proposed $PS^3$ …

Quark gap equation with non-Abelian Ball-Chiu vertex

2018

The full quark-gluon vertex is a crucial ingredient for the dynamical generation of a constituent quark mass from the standard quark gap equation, and its non-transverse part may be determined exactly from the nonlinear Slavnov-Taylor identity that it satisfies. The resulting expression involves not only the quark propagator, but also the ghost dressing function and the quark-ghost kernel, and constitutes the non-abelian extension of the so-called "Ball-Chiu vertex", known from QED. In the present work we carry out a detailed study of the impact of this vertex on the gap equation and the quark masses generated from it, putting particular emphasis on the contributions directly related with t…

Direct CP violation in ${K^0\to\pi\pi}$ : Standard Model Status

2017

In 1988 the NA31 experiment presented the first evidence of direct CP violation in the $K^0\to\pi\pi$ decay amplitudes. A clear signal with a $7.2\,\sigma$ statistical significance was later established with the full data samples from the NA31, E731, NA48 and KTeV experiments, confirming that CP violation is associated with a $\Delta S=1$ quark transition, as predicted by the Standard Model. However, the theoretical prediction for the measured ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ has been a subject of strong controversy along the years. Although the underlying physics was already clarified in 2001, the recent release of improved lattice data has revived again the theoretical debate. We review t…

Search for pentaquarks states in Z decays

2004

Exotic hadrons made of five quarks (pentaquarks) are searched for in hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP. No significant signal is observed. At 95% C.L. upper limits are set on the production rates N of such particles and their charge-conjugate state per Z decay: N Θ(1535)+·BR(Θ(1535)+→pK S0)<6.2×10-4, N Ε(1862)-·BR(Ε(1862)-→Ε -π-)<4.5×10-4, N Ε(1862)0·BR(Ε(1862)0→Ε -π+)<8.9×10-4, N Θc(3100)0·BR(Θc(3100) 0→D*-p)<6.3×10-4, N Θc(3100)0·BR(Θc(3100) 0→D-p)<31×10-4. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Inclusive D* production in gamma-gamma collisions: including the single-resolved contribution with massive quarks

2003

We have calculated the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks as a function of the transverse momentum p_T and the rapidity in two approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the single-resolved cross section we have derived the massless limit from the massive theory. We find that this limit differs from the genuine massless version with MS-bar factorization by finite corrections. By adjusting subtraction terms we establish a massive theory with MS-bar subtraction which approaches the massless theory very fast with increasing transverse momentum. With these results and including the equivalent results for the direct cross section obtained…

Search for a Fourth Generationt′Quark inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2011

We present a search for pair production of a fourth generation t' quark and its antiparticle, followed by their decays to a W boson and a jet, based on an integrated luminosity of 5.3/fb of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits on the t't'bar production cross section that exclude at the 95% C.L. a t' quark that decays exclusively to W+jet with a mass below 285 GeV. We observe a small excess in the muon+jets channel which reduces the mass range excluded compared to the expected limit of 320 GeV in the absence of a signal.

From Tree Unitarity to Top Quark Physics in 5D Higgsless Models

2005

In five dimensional models of Higgsless electroweak symmetry breaking, tree level unitarity in gauge boson scattering is restored by the exchange of gauge boson Kaluza-Klein modes instead of a Higgs boson. Unitarity of scattering amplitudes involving top quarks requires also the Kaluza-Klein modes of the third family quarks. It is shown that the relevant unitarity cancellations are consistent with gauge symmetry breaking by boundary conditions. These results are used to constrain the couplings of the top quark to Kaluza-Klein modes and the implications for collider phenomenology are discussed.

Finite-size scaling of the quark condensate in quenched lattice QCD

1999

We confront the finite volume and small quark mass behaviour of the scalar condensate, determined numerically in quenched lattice QCD using Neuberger fermions, with predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory. We find that quenched chiral perturbation theory describes the numerical data well, allowing us to extract the infinite volume, chiral limit scalar condensate, up to a multiplicative renormalization constant.

One-Loop Self Energy and Renormalization of the Speed of Light for some Anisotropic Improved Quark Actions

2000

One-loop corrections to the fermion rest mass M_1, wave function renormalization Z_2 and speed of light renormalization C_0 are presented for lattice actions that combine improved glue with clover or D234 quark actions and keep the temporal and spatial lattice spacings, a_t and a_s, distinct. We explore a range of values for the anisotropy parameter \chi = a_s/a_t and treat both massive and massless fermions.

Anatomy of flavour-changing Z couplings in models with partial compositeness

2013

In models with partially composite quarks, the couplings of quarks to the Z boson generically receive non-universal corrections that are not only constrained by electroweak precision tests but also lead to flavour-changing neutral currents at tree level. The impact of these flavour-changing couplings on rare K and B decays is studied in two-site models for three scenarios: an anarchic strong sector with two different choices of fermion representations both leading to a custodial protection of the Z->bb coupling, and for a strong sector invariant under a U(2)^3 flavour symmetry. In the complete numerical analysis, all relevant constraints from Delta(F)=2 processes are taken into account. …
