Muscle inactivity is adversely associated with biomarkers in physically active adults.
2015
PURPOSE While the lack of muscular activity is a proposed trigger for metabolic alterations, this association has not been directly measured. We examined the associations between EMG-derived muscle inactivity and activity patterns and cardiometabolic biomarkers in healthy, physically active adults. METHODS Data for this cross-sectional study were pooled from two studies (EMG24 and InPact), resulting in a sample of 150 individuals without known chronic diseases and with high-quality EMG data (female n = 85, male n = 65, age = 38.8 ± 10.6 yr, body mass index = 23.8 ± 3.1 kg·m⁻²). EMG was measured during one to three typical weekdays using EMG shorts, measuring quadriceps and hamstring muscle …
Impact of emergency medical helicopter transport directly to a university hospital trauma center on mortality of severe blunt trauma patients until d…
2012
International audience; IntroductionThe benefits of transporting severely injured patients by helicopter remain controversial. This study aimed to analyze the impact on mortality of helicopter compared to ground transport directly from the scene to a University hospital trauma center.MethodsThe French Intensive Care Research for Severe Trauma cohort study enrolled 2,703 patients with severe blunt trauma requiring admission to University hospital intensive care units within 72 hours. Pre-hospital and hospital clinical data, including the mode of transport, (helicopter (HMICU) versus ground (GMICU), both with medical teams), were recorded. The analysis was restricted to patients admitted dire…
Clinical Characteristics, Associated Malignancies and Management of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients: A Multicen…
2019
Abstract Background and Aims Primary sclerosing cholangitis [PSC] is usually associated with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. An increased risk of malignancies, mainly colorectal cancer [CRC] and cholangiocarcinoma [CCA], has been reported in PSC-IBD patients. Our aim was to determine the clinical characteristics and management of PSC in IBD patients, and the factors associated with malignancies. Methods PSC-IBD patients were identified from the Spanish ENEIDA registry of GETECCU. Additional data were collected using the AEG-REDCap electronic data capture tool. Results In total, 277 PSC-IBD patients were included, with an incidence rate of 61 PSC cases per 100 000 IBD patient-years, 69.7% …
The value of N-terminal fragment of brain natriuretic peptide and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 levels as predictors of cardiovascular outc…
2008
Aims We sought to determine the association between two major biomarkers, the inactive N-terminal fragment of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in a cohort of subjects who had a myocardial infarction or unstable angina 3–36 months previously. Methods and results Plasma NT-proBNP and TIMP-1 were measured in a nested case control study of 250 randomly matched subject pairs enrolled in the long-term intervention with pravastatin in ischaemic disease (LIPID) and LIPID extended follow-up studies. Cases ( n = 250) were defined as those who had a cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction or s…
Prognostic value of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in elderly people with acute myocardial infarction: prospective observational study
2009
Objective To examine the influence of age on the predictive value of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic (NT-proBNP) peptide assay in acute myocardial infarction. Design Prospective observational study. Setting All intensive care units in one French region. Participants 3291 consecutive patients admitted for an acute myocardial infarction, from the RICO survey (a French regional survey for acute myocardial infarction). Main outcome measure Cardiovascular death at 1 year. Results Among the 3291 participants, mean age was 68 (SD 14) years and 2356 (72%) were men. In the study population, the median NT-proBNP concentration was 1053 (interquartile range 300-3472) pg/ml. Median values for age quart…
Residual urine volume after total mesorectal excision: an indicator of pelvic autonomic nerve preservation? Results of a case-control study.
2004
Objective The rate of bladder dysfunctions after total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer can be decreased by bilateral pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP). However, it is not clear yet, how often partial nerve impairment may lead to bladder dysfunction. It was the aim of a case-control study, to examine the residual urine volume in patients before and after TME with and without complete PANP, in order to clarify, whether this parameter allows conclusions on the quality of PANP. Patients and methods Regarding bladder function, a case group (n = 26) without complete PANP was compared with a control group (n = 26) with complete identification and nerve preservation according…
Management of Pneumothoraces Detected on Chest Computed Tomography: Can Anatomical Location Identify Patients Who Can Be Managed Expectantly?
2014
Abstract Background Pneumothorax (PTX) can be readily detected by computed tomography (CT) or ultrasound. However, management of PTX in hemodynamically stable patients remains controversial. Study Objectives We sought to investigate whether a distinct anatomical distribution of PTX along prespecified chest zones as detected by CT can be described in patients with or without subsequent chest tube thoracotomy (CTT), thus potentially allowing the extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma (EFAST) ultrasound examination to guide PTX management. Methods We performed a retrospective review of chest CT scans performed in the emergency department (ED) of a Level I trauma center. CT scan…
Increased Adiposity Appraised with CUN-BAE Is Highly Predictive of Incident Hypertension. The SUN Project
2021
Overweight and obesity are growing worldwide and strongly associated with hypertension. The Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE) index is proposed as an optimal indicator of body fatness. We aimed to investigate the association of body fat as captured by the CUN-BAE index with incident hypertension in a Mediterranean population. We assessed 15,950 participants of the SUN (Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra) prospective cohort (63.7% women) initially free of hypertension. Participants completed follow-up questionnaires biennially. A validated 136-item food-frequency questionnaire was administered at baseline. We used Cox models adjusted for multiple confounders. …
Predictive value of venous thromboembolism (VTE)-BLEED to predict major bleeding and other adverse events in a practice-based cohort of patients with…
2018
Summary Venous thromboembolism (VTE)‐BLEED, a decision tool for predicting major bleeding during chronic anticoagulation for VTE has not yet been validated in practice‐based conditions. We calculated the prognostic indices of VTE‐BLEED for major bleeding after day 30 and day 90, as well as for recurrent VTE and all‐cause mortality, in 4457 patients enrolled in the international, prospective XALIA study. The median at‐risk time was 190 days (interquartile range 106–360). The crude hazard ratio (HR) for major bleeding after day 30 was 2·6 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1·3–5·2] and the treatment‐adjusted HR was 2·3 (95% CI 1·1–4·5) for VTE‐BLEED high (versus low) risk patients: the correspondi…
Trait-specific tracking and determinants of body composition: a 7-year follow-up study of pubertal growth in girls
2008
Abstract Background Understanding how bone (BM), lean (LM) and fat mass (FM) develop through childhood, puberty and adolescence is vital since it holds key information regarding current and future health. Our study aimed to determine how BM, LM and FM track from prepuberty to early adulthood in girls and what factors are associated with intra- and inter-individual variation in these three tissues. Methods The study was a 7-year longitudinal cohort study. BM, LM and FM measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, self-reported dietary information, leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and other factors were assessed one to eight times in 396 girls aged 10 to 13 years (baseline), and in 2…
