Riedel-shear control on the development of pennant veins: Field example and analogue modelling
2006
Abstract The wall rocks of a crustal scale sinistral ductile shear zone in Namibia, the Purros Mylonite Zone, contain two types of asymmetric quartz veins. Bedding surfaces contain sigmoidal quartz veins with limited thickness along their symmetry axes that can be classified as tension gashes. A second type of veins consists of a striated central fault vein separating pennant-type quartz filled terminations. The tips of these “pennant veins” have a different orientation to those of the tension gashes. Analogue experiments were carried out using a sheet of silicone powder suspended on a slab of poly-dimethyl-siloxane (PDMS), both deformed in simple shear. These experiments produced open frac…

Continuum reconstruction of the pore scale microstructure for Fontainebleau sandstone
2010
Abstract A stochastic geometrical modeling technique is used to reconstruct a laboratory scale Fontainebleau sandstone with a sidelength of 1.5 cm. The model reconstruction is based on crystallite properties and diagenetic parameters determined from two-dimensional images. The three-dimensional pore scale microstructure of the sandstone is represented by a list of quartz crystallites defined geometrically and placed in the continuum. This allows generation of synthetic μ -CT images of the rock model at arbitrary resolutions. Quantitative microstructure comparison based on Minkowski functionals, two-point correlation function and local porosity theory indicates that this modeling technique c…
The Generation Effect: Cavity Accessibility in Dense‐Shell Polyphenylene Dendrimers
2014
Size exclusion is a widespread phenomenon in supra- and macromolecular chemistry. Herein, the size exclusion properties of polyphenylene dendrimers on the surface of high fundamental frequency quartz crystal microbalances are reported. For this purpose, a new dense fifth-generation polyphenylene dendrimer, which was previously not possible owing to the high steric demand of the dendron arms, was synthesized. By increasing the volume and size of subjected analytes an affinity shift from smaller to larger dendrimers can be obtained.

Influence of Temperature on Characteristics of Particulate Matter and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals during Sewage Sludge Pyrolysis
2021
The formation process of Particulate Matter (PM) during sludge pyrolysis at different temperatures (300–700 °C) and the ecological risks of heavy metals were studied. The results showed that the particulate matter is mainly condensed on the quartz film in a carbon-based organic matter when the pyrolysis temperature was between 200–500 °C in a volatilization process. Inorganic particles was found in the particulate matter when the temperature was raised to 500–700 °C in a decomposition stage. Heavy metals were enriched in particulate matter with increase in pyrolysis temperature. When the temperature reached 700 °C, the concentration of Pb and Cd in the particulate matter significantly incre…
Raman-Mössbauer-XRD studies of selected samples from “Los Azulejos” outcrop: A possible analogue for assessing the alteration processes on Mars
2016
The outcrop of “Los Azulejos” is visible at the interior of the Cañadas Caldera in Tenerife Island (Spain). It exhibits a great variety of alteration processes that could be considered as terrestrial analogue for several geological processes on Mars. This outcrop is particularly interesting due to the content of clays, zeolite, iron oxides, and sulfates corresponding to a hydrothermal alteration catalogued as “Azulejos” type alteration. A detailed analysis by portable and laboratory Raman systems as well as other different techniques such as X ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy has been carried out (using twin-instruments from Martian lander missions: Mössbauer spectrometer MI…
ChemInform Abstract: Thermoelectric Transport in Cu7PSe6with High Copper Ionic Mobility.
2014
The copper ion conducting argyorite-type title compound is synthesized from the elements (evacuated quartz ampule, 1323 K, 3 h, and 773 K, 72 h) and its thermoelectric transport properties are studied.
Luminescence Dating of Fluvial Deposits in the Rock Shelter of Cueva Antón, Spain
2015
Abstract The fluvial sediments at Cueva Antón, a Middle Palaeolithic rock shelter located in the valley of the River Mula (Southeast Spain), produced abundant lithic assemblages of Mousterian affinities. Radiocarbon dates are available for the upper part of the archaeological succession, while for the middle to lower parts chronometric data have been missing. Here we present luminescence dating results for these parts of the succession. Quartz OSL on small aliquots and single grain measurements yield ages ranging from 69 ± 7 ka to 82 ± 8 ka with a weighted mean of 72 ± 4 ka for sub-complexes AS2 to AS5. Equivalent dose estimates from large aliquots were highest and inconsistent with those f…
Scrutiny of annexin A1 mediated membrane-membrane interaction by means of a thickness shear mode resonator and computer simulations.
2004
The dissipational quartz crystal microbalance (D-QCM) technology was applied to monitor the adsorption of vesicles to membrane-bound annexin A1 by simultaneously reading out the shifts in resonance frequency and dissipation. Solid-supported membranes (SSMs) composed of a chemisorbed octanethiol monolayer and a physisorbed 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoserine monolayer were immobilized on the gold electrode of a 5 MHz quartz plate. Adsorption and desorption of annexin A1 to the SSM was followed by means of the QCM technique. After nonbound annexin A1 was removed from solution, the second membrane binding was monitored by the D-QCM t…
