An operon for histidine biosynthesis in Streptomyces coelicolor

On the assumption that a cluster of five his genes (eight cistrons) in S. coelicolor corresponds to an operon, a genetic analysis of a constitutive mutant was carried out. This strain has a multi-site mutation localized at the (conventional) right end of the his cluster and is derepressed for at least two enzymes coded by genes of the cluster. The study of suitable heterozygous clones (heteroclones), showed the mutation to be cis-dominant, suggesting that the operator region is affected. Palaeoenvironmental significance of the mammalian faunas of Italy since the Pliocene

The evolution of mammalian communities is a significant tool for reconstructing past environments and climate. In this paper, a palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on the study of the Italian mammal faunas ranging from Middle Pliocene to the Holocene is presented using the cenogram method and quantification of temperatures based on arvicolid species richness. These analyses reveal open and arid conditions during glacial periods and less open and more humid conditions during interglacials, with some differences between north and central–south Italy. A major Holocene ENSO anomaly during the Medieval period

[1] Here, we present a high resolution marine El Nino flood record from Peru. A period of extreme drought without strong flooding occurred from A.D. 800–1250. Anomalous precipitation patterns characterized the entire Indo-Pacific ENSO domain, with dry events in the northern Arabian Sea and the mid-latitudes of both Americas, coinciding with wet periods in the Atlantic Cariaco Basin. The occurrence of contemporaneous moisture anomalies in other archives in the ENSO region highlights the role of El Nino strength in global climate evolution during the late Medieval period when temperature reconstructions show a rather heterogeneous pattern.

The inhibition of glycerol permeation through aquaglyceroporin-3 induced by mercury(II)

Mercurial compounds are known to inhibit water permeation through aquaporins (AQPs). Although in the last years some hypotheses were proposed, the exact mechanism of inhibition is still an open question and even less is known about the inhibition of the glycerol permeation through aquaglyceroporins. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of human aquaporin-3 (AQP3) have been performed up to 200 ns in the presence of Hg2+ ions. For the first time, we have observed the unbiased passage of a glycerol molecule from the extracellular to cytosolic side. Extraction of glyphosate by a supported liquid membrane technique.

The possible application of the supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique for the extraction of glyphosate is presented. For the extraction of this compound the SLM system has been applied with utilisation of Aliquat 336 as a cationic carrier incorporated into the membrane phase. The extraction efficiency of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] is dependent on the donor phase pH, carrier concentration in the organic phase and NaCl concentration in the acceptor phase. The Eifel volcanism is part of the Cenozoic Central European Volcanic Province and is located close to the Rhine Graben which has been formed by rifting and subsidence since the Eocene. Whereas the Quaternary volcanism of the Eifel appears to be genetically related to mantle plume activity, the cause of the Tertiary volcanism of the Hocheifel volcanic field is less clear.
