Is There a Role for Tertiary (TCR) and Quaternary (QCR) Cytoreduction in Recurrent Ovarian Cancer?

2015

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of tertiary and quaternary cytoreduction in recurrent ovarian cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS:Between January 1997 and December 2014, 53 patients were submitted to cytoreductive surgery for second and third ovarian cancer recurrence at our Unit. RESULTS:Median age at first diagnosis was 48 years (range=20-69). Forty-six patients (86.8%) underwent tertiary cytoreduction. At the time of surgery, isolated and diffuse disease was observed in 48 (90.6%) and 5 (9.4%) patients, respectively. Complete and optimal cytoreduction was obtained in 41 (77.5%) and in 1 (1.9%) patients, respectively. We did not observe any statisti…

Modification of the proteolytic fragmentation pattern upon oxidation of cysteines from ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase.

2003

The proteolytic susceptibility of the native CO 2 -fixing photosynthetic enzyme ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39, Rubisco) has been shown to increase in vitro after oxidative treatments that affect cysteine thiols. A limited incubation of oxidized (pretreated with the disulfide cystamine) Rubisco from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with subtilisin or proteinase K generated fragments of molecular mass about 53 kDa (band I in SDS-PAGE) and 47 kDa (band II) derived from the large subunit (55 kDa) of the enzyme. In contrast, proteolysis of the reduced Rubisco (pretreated with the free thiol cysteamine) produced only the 53 kDa band. The same fragmentation pattern was repr…

Leukoma antiqua (Bivalvia) - A high-resolution marine paleoclimate archive for southern South America?

2018

The Patagonian Sea in the SW Atlantic is one of the most productive marine ecosystems worldwide. Besides its economic relevance, this shelf sea serves as a major sink for atmospheric CO2 and thus plays a major role in global climate. Despite that, the marine climate dynamics in that region remain barely known. Instrumental records only cover the last 30 years or so and high-resolution climate archives are currently not available. Here, we explore the possibility to obtain seasonally to inter-annually resolved paleotemperature data from shells of the bivalve mollusk, Leukoma antiqua collected alive from the shallow subtidal zone of the San Jorge Gulf. Results demonstrate that this species gr…

Paleoecological insight into the straight-tusked elephant population from the late Middle Pleistocene site of Poggetti Vecchi

Sicilian Lithostratigraphic Units

2018

This chapter includes the description of the Sicilian lithostratigraphic units (Fig. 2.1). They are grouped in a generally chronological order and the complete list of the worksheets is shown in the Table of contents. In each chronologic group the worksheets of the described formations are organized in alphabetic order. The Permo-Triassic units are the oldest deposits outcropping in Sicily that originated during the early stages of the Southern Tethyan continental rifting. The Meso-Cenozoic carbonate units represent the sedimentary sequences of the various stratigraphic successions differentiated in the field along the Sicilian outcrops. The deposits of the Sicilide Complex (Tethyan units) …

Pliocene-lower Pleistocene chronostratigraphy: A re-evaluation of Mediterranean type sections

1991

The Pliocene-Pleistocene stages defined for the Mediterranean region are generally used as the standard chronostratigraphic units for the upper Neogene and Quaternary. The recently developed calcareous plankton bio-chronology based on results from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 107 and numerous outcrop sections provides the necessary time control for evaluating the ages and stratigraphic relationships for the various Pliocene-Pleistocene stages and their associated stratotypes. Our results indicate that the currently accepted stratotypes do not provide a continuous stratigraphic representation for all of Pliocene-early Pleistocene time. On the basis of these findings, we propose a revised chron…

Characterisation of Mesozoic–Cenozoic deformations and palaeostress fields in the Central Constantinois, northeast Algeria

1998

Abstract Tectonic analysis in conjunction with the microtectonic study of Mesozoic–Cenozoic series of the Central Constantinois of Algeria are used to reconstruct the sequence of tectonic phases since Cretaceous times. The retrotectonic method used to marshal the microtectonic data makes it possible to distinguish deformations related to Mesozoic tectonic phases from those associated with Cenozoic pre- and post-thrust sheet phases. A N120°E extensional and a N180°E compressional phase are highlighted in Albian–Cenomanian and latest Maastrichtian times, respectively. The Cenozoic era is marked by a series of three compressional phases oriented N90°–120°E in the Late Eocene, and N20°–30°E and…

Quaternary pollen analysis in the Iberian Peninsula: the value of negative results

2009

Most unsuccessful palynological work is never published. As a consequence, pollen analysts waste time re-processing sterile sediments, and the available literature exhibits a uniformly positive record of success in pollen extraction. Here we report failures with Quaternary pollen analyses in the Iberian Peninsula; that is, case studies where it was not possible to extract palynomorphs for pollen counting. Both totally sterile and partially sterile sites are considered. Sites and perspectives for future studies are suggested. The majority of the failed studies are openair archaeological and palaeontological sites, caves and rockshelters, but there are prominent cases of success. Peat bogs ha…

The lower and middle Pleistocene geological record of the San Lorenzo lacustrine succession in the Sant’Arcangelo Basin (Southern Apennines, Italy)

2005

The Sant’Arcangelo Basin is located in the southern part of the Apennine chain (Basilicata). It is filled by a siliciclastic sequence 3500m thick, dated to the Late Pliocene–Middle Pleistocene time interval. In this basin an Early Middle Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine sequence, known as San Lorenzo Cycle, has been recognised. In the upper part of the sequence, in Rifreddo, a fairly diversified small vertebrate assemblage has been recovered. The occurrence of Mimomys savini allows to the fauna to be considered as Biharian. The presence of some faunal elements such as Microtus (Terricola) arvalidens, Microtus (Iberomys) ex gr. huescarensis-brecciensis, and Macroneomys cf. brachygnathus restric…
