Past aquatic environments in the Levant inferred from stable isotope compositions of carbonate and phosphate in fish teeth

Here we explore the carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of the co-existing carbonate and phosphate fractions of fish tooth enameloid as a tool to reconstruct past aquatic fish environments and harvesting grounds. The enameloid oxygen isotope compositions of the phosphate fraction (δ18OPO4) vary by as much as ~4‰ for migratory marine fish such as gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), predominantly reflecting the different saline habitats it occupies during its life cycle. The offset in enameloid Δ18OCO3-PO4 values of modern marine Sparidae and freshwater Cyprinidae from the Southeast Mediterranean region vary between 8.1 and 11.0‰, similar to values reported for modern sharks. Capillary electrophoretic and nuclear magnetic resonance studies of interactions between halophenols and ionic liquid or tetraalkylammonium cations.

Aqueous capillary electrophoretic studies were performed to investigate interactions between halophenols and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate or tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate electrolytes. In both cases, increased halogen size correlated with increased affinity for the electrolyte cation. For isomers, the ortho substituted isomer exhibited higher affinity than the para isomer. Irreproducible CE results for analyte pairs in the presence of the ionic liquid stimulated investigations of the interactions between halophenols as well as with the cations of the electrolyte. Fibril deposit formation of amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increasing evidence suggests that toxicity is linked to diffusible Abeta oligomers, which have been found in soluble brain extracts of AD patients, rather than to insoluble fibers. Here we report a study of the toxicity of two distinct forms of recombinant Abeta small oligomers and fibrillar aggregates to simulate the action of diffusible Abeta oligomers and amyloid plaques on neuronal cells. Prefibrillar oligomers of proteins are suspected to be the primary pathogenic agents in several neurodegenerative diseases. A key approach for elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms is to probe the existence of oligomers directly in living cells. Quaternary structure dependence of kinetic hole burning and conformational substates interconversion in hemoglobin.

Using a sol-gel encapsulation technique, we have prepared samples of CO saturated human adult hemoglobin locked in the R or T quaternary conformation. We report time-resolved spectra of these samples in the Soret region following flash photolysis, in the time interval ranging from 250 ns to 200 ms and in the temperature interval of 100-170 K. A suitable analysis of the measured difference spectra enables us to obtain the spectral contribution of deoxyHb and HbCO molecules as a function of time and/or of the fraction N(t) of deoxyHb molecules. Comparison between hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor and activated sludge system: a pilot plant experiment

The paper presents the comparison between the traditional activated sludge system (AS) and a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor (HMBBR). In particular, an experimental campaign has been carried out at the WWTP in Palermo (Italy), on a pilot plant consisting of two pre-anoxic schemes. The aerated tank of the HMBBR line was filled with suspended carriers (AnoxKaldnes™ K1), with a 30% filling ratio. The hydraulic load of the HMBBR line was increased up to two times the AS one. Quaternary diversification in European alpine plants: pattern and process

Molecular clock approaches applied previously to European alpine plants suggest that Primula sect. Auricula , Gentiana sect. Ciminalis and Soldanella diversified at the beginning of the Quaternary or well within this period, whereas Globularia had already started diversifying in the (Late–)Tertiary. In the first part of this paper we present evidence that, in contrast to Globularia and Soldanella , the branching patterns of the molecular internal transcribed spacer phylogenies of both Primula and Gentiana are incompatible with a constant–rates birth–death model. Increased resistance to oxidation of betalain-enriched human low density lipoproteins

Betalains are natural pigments recently considered as compounds with potential antioxidative properties. In this work, ex vivo plasma spiking of pure either betanin or indicaxanthin, followed by isolation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), and measurement of its resistance to copper-induced oxidation, has been used to research if these betalains can bind to LDL and prevent oxidation of LDL lipids. In 1980, Lim and Sun introduced a microcapsule coated with an alginate/polylysine complex for encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Characteristic to this type of capsule is, that it consists of a plain membrane which is formed during a single procedural step.
