Small genomes and the difficulty to define minimal translation and metabolic machineries
2015
The notion of minimal life has sparked the interest of scientists in different fields, ranging from the origin-of-life research to biotechnology-oriented synthetic biology. Whether the interest is focused on the emergence of protocells out of prebiotic systems or the design of a cell chassis ready to incorporate new devices and functions, proposing minimal combinations of genes for life is not a trivial task. Using comparative genomics and biochemistry of endosymbionts (i.e., intracellular mutualistic symbionts) and intracellular parasites, a decade ago we proposed the core of a minimal gene set for a simple heterotrophic cell adapted to a chemically complex environment. In this work, we di…
Replacement queens in the neotropical termiteNasutitermes coxipoensis
1987
The production of replacement queens in experimentally orphaned colonies was investigated in the neotropical termiteNasutitermes coxipoensis holmgren. A single adultoid replacement queen was produced with six weeks in more than 50% of the nests. The new queen begins oviposition extremely quickly. Replacement kings are seldom seen but must be present since brood in the nest in atribuable to the replacement queen. InN. coxipoensis, replacement adultoid queens and kings seem to develop preferentially from the few aged nymphs which are present in the nest throughout the year.
PARASITES AND SEXUAL REPRODUCTION IN PSYCHID MOTHS
2004
Persistence of sexual reproduction among coexisting asexual competitors has been a major paradox in evolutionary biology. The number of empirical studies is still very limited, as few systems with coexisting sexual and strictly asexual lineages have been found. We studied the ecological mechanisms behind the simultaneous coexistence of a sexually and an asexually reproducing closely related species of psychid moth in Central Finland between 1999 and 2001. The two species compete for the same resources and are often infected by the same hymenopteran parasitoids. They are extremely morphologically and behaviorally similar and can be separated only by their reproductive strategy (sexual vs. as…
Bárbara de Braganza.Una aproximación a su faceta como coleccionista
2018
Catherine Jagiellon, Queen Consort of Sweden: Counselling Between the Catholic Jagiellons and the Lutheran Vasas
2018
Catherine Jagiellon (1526–83), was a Catholic Polish-Lithuanian princess married to a Lutheran Swedish Prince, John Vasa, Duke of Finland and later King of Sweden. Her case provides important insights into the impact of confessional differences within a royal marriage of the sixteenth century and their consequences for counsel. The chapter highlights the significance of Catherine’s network of confidants, and the role of her entourage in providing political support. While she was not always a successful counsellor, evidence from her correspondence demonstrates that she was a careful manager of her self-presentation in a range of delicate situations.
Il corpo delle regine
2022
2022
The aim of this paper is for it to be a tribute to Queen Victoria through her monument in Valletta (1887-1891) by the sculptor Giuseppe Valenti from Palermo
The recruitment of scallops (and beyond) by two different artificial collectors (Gulf of Taranto, Mediterranean Sea)
2015
This study provides for the first time an evaluation of the natural availability of scallop seeds along the coastal area of Taranto (Mediterranean Sea, Southern Italy). To select the best artificial collectors to harvest scallop seeds in this area, cylindrical collectors (Cyl) were compared to traditional 'Japanese-style onion bags' (Bag) across three sites. Scallops represented 26.6% of total bivalve recruitment among all collectors (782 ± 331 ind. m-2). The most recruited scallops were Flexopecten glaber and Mimachlamys varia. The white (F. glaber) and black scallops (M. varia) were abundant at all three sites, while the queen scallop, Aequipecten opercularis, was only found at one site. …
La regina Vittoria icona di moda: la passione per i merletti e la statua di La Valletta
2019
A tribute to her Majesty Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as an icon of fashion and international style in the bicentenary of her birth, between passion for lace and the monument dedicated to her in Valletta (Malta).
Low parasitism rates in parthenogenetic bagworm moths do not support the parasitoid hypothesis for sex
2012
The parasite hypothesis for sex is one of the many theories that have been suggested to solve the mystery of the widespread occurrence of sex despite its high short-term costs. It suggests that sexual lineages have an evolutionary advantage over parthenogens because they can frequently generate new genotypes that are temporarily less prone to coevolving parasites. In this study, we looked for further supporting evidence for the parasite hypothesis of sex in an attempt to understand the coexistence of sexual and parthenogenetic bagworm moths (Naryciinae). The bagworm moths and their parasitoids form one of the few natural host-parasite systems where sexual and parthenogenetic hosts are appar…
