Fluorescence induction kinetics as a tool to detect a chlororespiratory activity in the prasinophycean alga, Mantoniella squamata

Abstract Pulse-modulated fluorescence measuring systems were used to study the fluorescence induction kinetics of the primitive prasinophycean alga, Mantoniella squamata . DCMU-treated cells show a very strong non-photochemical quenching which is insensitive to uncouplers and can not be attributed to state transitions or photoinhibition. In order to analyze the origin for this quenching, different inhibitors of the photosynthetic electron flow were applied. It was found that DCCD, an inhibitor of the ATP-synthase as well as of the cytochrome- c oxidase, enhances the fluorescence quenching, whereas antimycin A, which blocks the cyclic electron flow around PS I, stimulates it. Recombination processes in unintentionally doped GaTe single crystals

Emission spectra of GaTe single crystals in the range of 1.90–1.38 eV have been analyzed at different temperatures and excitation intensities by photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and selective photoluminescence. A decrease in band gap energy with an increase in temperature was obtained from the redshift of the free exciton recombination peak. The energy of longitudinal optical phonons was found to be 14±1 meV. A value of 1.796±0.001 eV for the band gap at 10 K was determined, and the bound exciton energy was found to be 18±0.3 meV. Modulation of the electronic properties of GaN films by surface acoustic waves

We report on the interaction between photogenerated electron-hole pairs and surface acoustic waves (SAW) in GaN films grown on sapphire substrates. The spatial separation of photogenerated carriers by the piezoelectric field of the SAW is evidenced by the quenching of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The quenching levels in GaN are significantly smaller than those measured in GaAs under similar conditions. The latter is attributed to the lower exciton ionization efficiency and carrier separation probabilities mediated by the piezoelectric effect. Emission Enhancement by Intramolecular Stacking between Heteroleptic Iridium(III) Complex and Flexibly Bridged Aromatic Pendant Group

Phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes suffer from a strong aggregation quenching, limiting their use in solution-processed or crystalline organic light-emitting diodes. Here we report how an intramolecular stacking between a flexibly bridged bulky aromatic pendant group and the core of nonionic heteroleptic complex can be exploited to minimize the negative effects of this drawback. The stacked conformation provides a rigid sterical shielding of the polar molecular surface, improving photoluminescence quantum yield of the complex both in solution and crystalline state.

Intramolecular Electron Transfer between Tyrosine and Tryptophan Photosensitized by a Chiral π,π* Aromatic Ketone

The photochemical reaction of Trp and Tyr and related peptides with Suprofen (SUP) as sensitizer in H2O/CH3CN (28:1 v/v) solutions has been studied by time-resolved spectroscopy. The results show that SUP induces oxidation of both Trp and Tyr, as well as intramolecular-ET reactions in the related peptides. The influence of photosensitizer configuration on the involved processes has been studied by using the enantiomerically pure compounds. A significant chiral recognition is observed in which the concentration of the radicals formed after triplet quenching depends on the configuration of the chiral center; the quenching process is higher when using the (R)-SUP enantiomer.
Measurement of photon?jet transverse momentum correlations in 5.02 TeV Pb + Pb and pp collisions with ATLAS

Jets created in association with a photon can be used as a calibrated probe to study energy loss in the medium created in nuclear collisions. Measurements of the transverse momentum balance between isolated photons and inclusive jets are presented using integrated luminosities of 0.49 nb−1 of Pb + Pb collision data at TeV and 25 pb−1 of pp collision data at TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Abstract The influence of the transthylakoid proton gradient on the kinetics of picosecond fluorescence decay was examined using isolated pea thylakoids having high or low zeaxanthin contents. Fluorescence lifetime measurements were performed with open (Fo) and closed (Fm) PS II reaction centers. Zeaxanthin formation in membrane energized isolated thylakoids led to a marked decrease of the average fluorescence lifetime at both Fm and Fo. In contrast, when zeaxanthin synthesis was blocked by the inhibitor DTT, the fluorescence lifetime decrease was less pronounced in the Fm state and totally missing in the Fo state. The acclimation potential to high irradiance of two cultivars of watermelon, Reina de Corazones and Toro, calculated as the ratio of sun vs. shade activities of O2− and H2O2 scavenging enzymes and non-radiative energy dissipation, was similar. However, Reina de Corazones exhibited a higher capacity in absolute terms for photoprotection (harmless dissipation of absorbed light energy at PS 2 and ascorbate and O2− and H2O2 scavenging enzymes) suggesting a larger resistance of this cultivar to high irradiance. This could be seen as smaller decreases in fruit productivity and in lower oxidative injury as probed by malondialdehyde content in sun plants of Reina de Corazones than in Toro plants. A…
