Visual fields in a chloroquine treatment
2014
Purpose: In this study, we describe contrast sensitivity losses in the visual field of a patient affected by chloroquine toxicity, measured with stimuli favoring different visual mechanisms. We have compared these results with those of other, usual clinical tests. Methods: The vision of a patient who underwent ten years of chloroquine treatment was analyzed by a battery of clinical tests: visual acuity (VA), Amsler’s grid, Farnsworth–Munsell 100-hue test, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, multifocal electroretinogram (ERG), white-on-white and red-on-white Humphrey perimetries, chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity perimetry tests, and fluorescein angiography. Measurement…
Ranke, Burckhardt und die "Orientalische Renaissance"
2021
The essay outlines Ranke's and Burckhardt's responses to the "Eastern Renaissance" triggered by Romanticism and late nineteenth-century culture. Main topics are the productive role of violence in history, the meaning of "sacrifice" and the danger of anonymity in metropolitan life. An important reference is found in a Quinet's book, which is used here as an undelying theme.
Quine's naturalistic conception of truth
2017
Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena on muodostaa kuvaus Willard Van Orman Quinen (1908–2000) filosofiseen järjestelmään sisältyvän totuuskäsityksestä. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena on täyttää tätä olemassa olevaa aukkoa suhteellisen laajassa Quinen filosofista järjestelmää käsittelevässä tutkimuskentässä. Argumentoin sen puolesta, kuinka Quinen filosofisen järjestelmän osaksi kuuluu hänen filosofisiin sitoumuksiinsa perustuva koherentti totuuskäsitys. Pyrin osoittamaan, kuinka tämä totuuskäsi…

IFT46 Expression in the Nasal Mucosa of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Patients: Preliminary Study
2021
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/2152656721989288 Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterised by an imbalance in mucociliary clearance leading to chronic respiratory infections. Cilia length is considered to be a contributing factor in cilia movement. Recently, IFT46 protein has been related to cilia length. Therefore, this work aims to study IFT46 expression in a PCD patients cohort and analyse its relationship with cilia length and function, as it was not previously described. Materials and methods: The expression of one intraflagellar transport (IFT46) and two regulating ciliary architecture (FOXJ1 a…

Decreased Perifoveal Sensitivity Detected by Microperimetry in Patients Using Hydroxychloroquine and without Visual Field and Fundoscopic Anomalies
2015
Purpose. To evaluate the usefulness of microperimetry in the early detection of the ocular anomalies associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine.Methods. Prospective comparative case series study comprising 14 healthy eyes of 7 patients (group A) and 14 eyes of 7 patients under treatment with hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of rheumatologic diseases and without fundoscopic or perimetric anomalies (group B). A comprehensive ophthalmological examination including microperimetry (MP) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography was performed in both groups.Results. No significant differences were found in mean MP foveal sensitivity between groupsP=0.18. However, mean MP overall sens…
Inhibition of Peripheral Dopamine Metabolism and the Ventilatory Response to Hypoxia in the Rat
2014
Dopamine (DA) is a putative neurotransmitter in the carotid body engaged in the generation of the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). However, the action of endogenous DA is unsettled. This study seeks to determine the ventilatory effects of increased availability of endogenous DA caused by inhibition of DA enzymatic breakdown. The peripheral inhibitor of MAO – debrisoquine, or COMT – entacapone, or both combined were injected to conscious rats. Ventilation and its responses to acute 8 % O2 in N2 were investigated in a whole body plethysmograph. We found that inhibition of MAO augmented the hyperventilatory response to hypoxia. Inhibition of COMT failed to influence the hypoxic response. Ho…
A systematic review on the efficacy and safety of chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19
2020
Purpose COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is a public health emergency of international concern. As of this time, there is no known effective pharmaceutical treatment, although it is much needed for patient contracting the severe form of the disease. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence regarding chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19. Methods PubMed, EMBASE, and three trial Registries were searched for studies on the use of chloroquine in patients with COVID-19. Results We included six articles (one narrative letter, one in-vitro study, one editorial, expert consensus paper, two national guideline documents) and 23 ongoing clinical trials in China. Chloroqui…
