Retrospective clinicopathological study of 418 odontogenic cysts

2010

Objectives: To determine the relative incidence of odontogenic cysts and to identify the main clinicopathological features among patients treated in the Oral Surgery Department of the Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona (Spain). Study design: A retrospective observational study was made of 418 odontogenic cysts diagnosed in 380 patients included in the database of 1235 histopathological diagnoses. The subjects were treated in the Master degree program of Oral Surgery and Implantology of the University of Barcelona in the period 1997-2006. The following variables were recorded: gender, age, clinical characteristics of the lesions (size and location), radiological features, duration,…

Traumatic bone cyst: a retrospective study of 21 cases

2009

Objective: To describe the clinical and radiological characteristics, and surgical findings of traumatic bone cysts. Study Design: A retrospective observational study was made of 21 traumatic bone cysts. The diagnosis was based on the anamnesis, clinical examination, and complementary tests. Panoramic and periapical X-rays were obtained in all cases, together with computed tomography as decided by the surgeon. A descriptive statistical analysis was made of the study variables using the SPSS v12.0 for Windows. Results: There was a clear female predominance (14:7). The mean age was 26.5 years (range 8-45 years). The cysts in all cases constituted casual findings during routine radiological ex…

Lateral periodontal cysts: a retrospective study of 11 cases

2008

Objective: To describe the clinical, radiological and histopathological features of lateral periodontal cysts among patients diagnosed in different centers (Vall d?Hebron General Hospital, Granollers General Hospital, the Teknon Medical Center, and the Master of Oral Surgery and Implantology of the University of Barcelona Dental School; Barcelona, Spain). Study design: A retrospective observational study was made of 11 lateral periodontal cysts, all of which were diagnosed following a thorough clinical examination, radiological study and posterior histological study. Results: The mean patient age was 37 years, and males predominated over females. The mean lesion size was 1.25 cm. A single r…

Nasopalatine duct cyst: report of 22 cases and review of the literature

2008

Objectives: Nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDCs) are the most common developmental, epithelial and non-odontogenic cysts of the maxillae. The present study describes the clinicopathological characteristics of 22 NPDCs and discusses their etiology, incidence, treatment and prognosis, with a review of the literature on the subject. Study design: A retrospective observational study was made comprising a period of 36 years (1970-2006), and yielding a series of 22 patients with histopathological confirmation of NPDC. Surgical treatment was carried out under local anesthesia and comprised the dissection and removal of the cyst adopting a usually palatine approach, with the preparation of an enveloping…

Dentigerous cyst with parietal and intracystic calcifications: a case report and literature review

2018

Background Dentigerous cyst appears surrounding the crown of an included tooth. On the radiographic exam, a radiolucent rounded well-defined lesion can be observed. Material and methods This study reports a clinical case of a 34-years old man with a pericoronal radiolucent lesion associated to an impacted lower third molar with the presence of radiopaque material inside. The radiological differential diagnosis was calcifying odontogenic tumor, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor and dentigerous cyst. The impacted third molar was removed and the lesion was sent for the histopathological exam. Results The histopathological diagnosis was dentigerous cyst with capsular calcifications. Specifically, p…

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma arising in dentigerous cyst: Report of 2 cases and review of the literature

2015

Dentigerous cysts are one of the most common odontogenic cysts of the oral cavity. Odontogenic cysts can give rise to a variety of neoplasms. Carcinoma arising in a dentigerous cyst is extremely rare, with a review of literature showing near 30 cases. The present report describes 2 cases of primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma originated from a dentigerous cyst. The first one refers to a 57-year old female with a persistent lesion in the left retromolarregion and diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma originated fromthe incomplete excision of the lower third molar follicle during its surgical extraction. The second case describes the case of an 18-year old male with an impacted uppe…

Squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferation in a radicular cyst: a case report

2013

The squamous odontogenic tumour is a rare benign neoplasm whose aetiology remains unknown. It usually appears in the jaw and its origin could be related to the ephitelial remnants of Malassez. Histologically comprises numerous islets of squamous, non-keratinized, well-differentiated and rounded epithelial cells a fibrous stroma without signs of atypical cells. There is a non-neoplastic lesion with the same histological pattern than the squamous odontogenic tumour. This entity is characterized by squamous odontogenic tumour proliferations isolated into the cyst wall of an odontogenic cyst. It is rare and has a benign behavior. It has been suggested that these epithelial proliferations could …

Simple bone cyst : a case report

2021

Background Simple bone cysts (SBC) are intraosseous cysts devoid of an epithelial lining, asymptomatic and appearing in the jaw. In general, SBCs are discovered incidentally and tooth displacement or pathological fractures are very unusual. Material and methods This study reports a 16 years old man that presented an asymtomatic radiolucent unilocular lesion in the right ascending ramus. Differencial diagnosis included odontogenic keratocyst and dentigerous cyst. One surgical intervention was performed and consisted in the curettage of the bone walls. The lesion and some small samples of the bone wall were sent for the anatomopathological study. Results The anatomopathological exam confirmed…
